Zhang Zhicheng returned to the classroom with his teaching materials. After setting down his books, he first glanced at the class monitor sitting in the front row and asked, “Lin Xia, how’s your ankle?”
The student who was suddenly called upon was stunned for a moment, then instinctively replied, “It’s, it’s fine!”
“Good, glad to hear that. Now that you’re in the second semester of your second year, be careful when you’re exercising. Don’t hurt your arms or legs and affect your studies,” Zhang Zhicheng said, not paying much attention to Lin Xia, who was left confused and bewildered. He paused for a moment before continuing, “I’m sure you’ve all seen that post on the school’s forum, right? And you’ve probably discussed it with others as well. I’d like to ask, did any of you witness the events described in that post firsthand, or personally experience them? If so, raise your hand and let me see.”
Zhang Zhicheng’s tone and expression suddenly became serious, and the already quiet classroom fell into an even deeper silence.
“People say that seeing is believing, and hearing is deceiving. Even if you hear something with your own ears, it could be false; even if you see it with your own eyes, it could be staged. If you haven’t personally experienced something, what right do you have to put a baseless label on someone behind their back?”
“Why? Because you’re young? Because you’re reckless? Or because you can move your lips and, without expending any effort, use your words to destroy a person? I can’t directly manage what other classes do, but as long as I’m here, I don’t want to hear any of you talking badly about anyone behind their back. I hope all of you will become people with principles and a sense of integrity. The post has already been deleted by the administrator, but this matter won’t be simply brushed aside. I hope that if such rumors arise again, students from our class will stand up and say no to those voices. Do you understand?”
“Yes, we understand!”
“Louder!”
“Yes, we understand!”
“Good, let’s start the lesson.”
For the entire Chinese class, everyone was uncharacteristically well-behaved. It wasn’t until after class when Zhang Zhicheng had just stepped out of the room, that the students of Class 3 Year 2, erupted in astonishment.
“Damn, why do I feel like Mr. Zhang was kind of cool today?”
“Those words were incredibly inspiring. ‘I hope you become people with principles and integrity’—I’ve never heard Old Zhang say something like that before. Do you think he might start giving us motivational speeches in the future?”
“I doubt it. Language teachers are pretty good at that kind of thing, but yeah, Old Zhang was really cool today!”
“Honestly, I also think that post on the forum was over the top. It seems like the person who posted it had a lot of malice.”
“If you think about it, what did the students from the North Campus even do wrong? Just because they were born in the lower districts, does that mean they’re automatically inferior? In today’s post, they barely responded at all. If they were really that bad, things could have escalated to real-life conflicts. This shows that they’re not completely hopeless.”
“I get where you’re coming from, but let’s not jump to conclusions. They say time will reveal a person’s true nature, so let’s wait and see.”
Sitting in the last row, Shen Huaixiu listened to the discussions around him. His expression remained calm, no different from usual. But if you looked closely, you could see that the icy coldness in his black eyes had begun to thaw.
“Old Zhang really surprised us today,” Rong Shu said, resting his chin on his hand, offering genuine praise.
“Boss, boss!” Jiang Huan called out from the back door, waving at Shen Huaixiu with two cups of bubble tea in his hand. Rong Shu followed the sound and saw Jiang Huan.
Shen Huaixiu stood up and headed out. As soon as he left, Chen Jing turned around and said, “Do you think Old Zhang’s speech today was actually aimed at your deskmate?”
He had spent some time thinking it over last night, wondering why, as a student from the North Campus, Shen Huaixiu had been assigned to the South Campus alone. The purpose was likely to keep the North Campus students in check since Shen Huaixiu held a special place in their hearts. The school authorities must have been worried about handling those students.
Rong Shu gave him an approving look, ruffling his hair. “I see you’re getting smarter by the day!”
“Don’t mess with my hair—I just styled it this morning!” Chen Jing protested, instantly bristling. Rong Shu withdrew his hand with a look of regret. “Alright, alright, stop shouting. You’re making it seem like I did something terrible to you. I wanted to ask you something.”
“What’s up?” Chen Jing asked cautiously, leaning in as if expecting nothing good to come from this.
“Can we find out who posted that thread on the forum?” Rong Shu asked.
Chen Jing was surprised by the question, and his expression changed as he considered it. “It’s possible to find out, but it’ll take some effort. Even though it’s anonymous, the admins should be able to see the backend data. But if the person who posted it had any sense, they wouldn’t have used their main account. They probably used a trumpet1alternative or dummy, I guess account, which makes it hard to trace.”
Chen Jing’s reasoning made sense, and Rong Shu’s expression darkened slightly. Just as Chen Jing thought Rong Shu might give up, he heard Rong Shu say, “Get me a clean trumpet account.”
“What are you planning to do?” Chen Jing snapped his head up, staring at him like he’d lost his mind.
“Fishing!” Rong Shu bared his white teeth, the word coming out in a chilling tone that made Chen Jing’s spine tingle.
“Are you serious?” Chen Jing asked, his emotions complicated. He couldn’t understand what kind of spell Shen Huaixiu had cast to make someone like Rong Shu, the campus heartthrob, so obsessed.
Could this be what they call love at first sight?
That’s gotta be toxic!
“When am I ever not serious? Hurry up. If you don’t have one, I’ll buy one online.”
“Don’t buy one online—it’s not safe. I’ll get you one, but you also need to mask your IP or they can still trace it back to you.” After saying this, Chen Jing couldn’t help but add, “Come to my dorm and I’ll help you set it up.”
“You’re such a thoughtful guy, Chen Jing!” Rong Shu laughed and reached out to ruffle Chen Jing’s hair. Seeing this, Chen Jing quickly shrank back. “Don’t touch my hair! I just styled it this morning!”
Apparently, you can lose your head and bleed out, but your hairstyle must remain intact!
Shen Huaixiu looked at the two cups of lemon tea that Jiang Huan handed him. “Boss, I noticed you drank this before, so I bought two cups. You can give one to the campus heartthrob. I heard someone say they saw him standing up for you at the cafeteria entrance this morning. Make sure to thank him properly. Oh, by the way, one has more sugar, and the other has less. I wasn’t sure what you both prefer, so you two can decide.”
Shen Huaixiu originally wanted to refuse, but hearing the mention of how Rong Shu had defended him in the cafeteria earlier, he felt a pang of something unusual and, before he realized it, had already accepted the drinks: “I’ll transfer the money to you later. I’ll handle these things myself in the future.”
“Ah, come on, Boss, there’s no need to be polite with us. We just want you to be well.”
“I’m fine now, no need to worry. If you need anything, just come to me.”
“We’re doing well too. Everyone’s pretty happy. The food here in the South Campus is much better than back at our place. Hehe, Boss, we all know how rare this opportunity is and will make sure to cherish it. So don’t worry about us.”
Jiang Huan looked at Shen Huaixiu. The boy in front of them was just about their age. Time and again in the lower district, it was Shen Huaixiu who had pulled them out of difficult situations. Without him, many of them might have become mere members of the lower district’s various underworld factions before they even saw the day of merging schools.
“It’s good that you can think that way. Hurry back to class now,” Shen Huaixiu said, patting Jiang Huan on the shoulder before turning and heading back to the classroom with the two cups of lemon tea.
When Rong Shu saw him come in, he immediately stopped talking with Chen Jing and smiled as he looked at the lemon tea in Shen Huai Xiu’s hands.
Shen Huai Xiu handed him one of the cups. Rong Shu’s face immediately lit up with a smile: “For me?”
“Yeah. Try it and see if it’s sweet enough,” Shen Huaixiu replied. Although Jiang Huan had mentioned one was sweetened more and one less, he hadn’t specified which was which.
Rong Shu took the cup, swirled it around, then inserted a straw and took a sip. His brow furrowed: “It’s not sweet!”
After transferring the money to Jiang Huan, Shen Huaixiu heard this and pushed the other cup toward Rong Shu: “Try this one.”
Rong Shu narrowed his eyes: “Are you giving me both cups?”
“I’m not sure which one is more sugary. Since this cup isn’t sweet, this one should be the sweet one. I’ll take the one you tried,” Shen Huaixiu said, reaching out to take the cup Rong Shu had sipped from.
Rong Shu watched as Shen Huaixiu naturally took a sip from the straw that had touched his own lips, the thought of an indirect kiss running through his mind repeatedly.
The cat ears on top of his head twitched involuntarily, then twitched again.
He reached for the other cup, feeling dazed, and inserted the straw. Taking a sip, he thought, “Mmm, so sweet!”
“Is it sweet?”
“Sweet.”
Sweet beyond belief!
“That’s good.” Shen Huaixiu responded, placing the lemon tea on the edge of the desk, and then opened his workbook, bowing his head to prepare for some problems.
Rong Shu sat next to him for a while, then turned and asked quietly, “Why did you suddenly buy me lemon tea?”
Shen Huaixiu paused his pen and looked up into Rong Shu’s expectant black eyes: “Thank you for speaking up for me at the cafeteria entrance this morning.”
Rong Shu’s expression briefly blanked, then he looked surprised: “How did you know?”
“Well, if I want to know something, I usually find out,” Shen Huaixiu said, the corner of his lips lifting involuntarily. His deskmate was a bit cute.
“Oh, I almost forgot. My desk mate is an Alpha who controls the North Campus with one hand. If you want to know something, nothing can escape you. You’re amazing, cool to the extreme, practically can reach the heavens or dive into the earth!” After finishing, he even clapped his hands like a little seal, applauding Shen Huaixiu.
Shen Huaixiu: “…”
