Someone is There

Chapter 5: Someone is There

Houzuki makes her way down the pitch black corridor, relying only on the flashlight app on her smartphone.

The old school building has no lights on.

Not even moonlight shines through the windows, and this wooden old school building feels isolated from the rest of the world. The other side of the fogged-up windowpane is also dim, giving the illusion of being in another world.

Houzuki coughs unconsciously as dust brushes her nostrils.

“Hey, Yuiru.”

“What is it, Houzuki?”

The silver-haired, red-eyed high school boy walking ahead of the others, Yuiru Enen, answers without turning around.

“The old school building hasn’t eaten humans up until now, so why are they eating them now?”

“What are you talking about, Houzuki? The old school building still eats humans, just like before.”

“Huh?”

Houzuki had never heard any rumors about the old school eating people. Before the Ghost Club got in, there hadn’t been any damage with gruesomely murdered bodies found.

So now that harm has suddenly started, Houzuki assumed that the old school had finally started to become active. But that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Yuiru folded his arms and said, “That’s true,”

“I was the one who was interrupting the old school’s meals in the first place.”

“Interfering?”

“Before I encountered the main body of the old school building, I was dealing with the idiots that entered the old school building. It seems that the old school building hates that I am still living and has my own ego despite it having killed and eaten me. It seems to avoid getting close to me as much as possible.”

Come to think of it, Yuiru was also the first to appear when Houzuki visited the old school building. Every time she visited the old school building after that, Yuiru was the first to appear, and she was honestly surprised that there was a reason for that.

Perhaps because he’s now haunting Houzuki and has left the old school building, it started hunting again.

Unknowingly, Houzuki was under Yuiru’s protection. Houzuki secretly looked at Yuiru with admiration, even though he was usually arrogant.

“Well, I used to laugh my head off when all the idiots who came to the old school building would come and consult me for their troubles. I wonder who would have spread such a stupid rumor that ‘your wishes will come true’!!”

Houzuki suddenly wanted to retract her previous remark. He let out a deep sigh.

Gyiii, gyiiii.

Gyiii, gyiiii.

–Gyiiiiii…

In addition to Houzuki’s footsteps, more footsteps could be heard.

Houzuki turned around with a snap, and pointed her smartphone in the direction of the sound.

Dust had piled up like snow on the floor, which looked as if it was about to fall apart, leaving behind footprints as Houzuki walked.

Right next to the footprints on the floor, was a foot of someone standing. The foot, which was only visible from the knees down, and was wearing tattered indoor shoes, took a slow step.

Gyiiiiii…

Gyiiiiii…

Slowly, as if making a deliberate noise.

“Hiih!”

A high-pitched scream escaped Houzuki’s mouth.

Meanwhile, Yuiru, who was already in the same position, was snorting in boredom.

Normally he would treat other ghosts like snacks, but today he didn’t want to eat them. He’s probably leaving his stomach empty to eat the being that appears in the old school building.

“The fellow from the old school building has scattered its minions. It’s trying to separate me and Houzuki.”

Yuiru grabbed Houzuki’s arm and pulled her towards him,

“Houzuki, don’t let go.”

Yuiru spat out, glaring into the depths of the corridor with his vibrant red eyes that matched the darkness that enveloped the entire old school building.

“Here it comes.”
