IMAO Chapter 22

I Encountered a Lone Straggler

Resembling an Omega, Arlo was quietly following behind Jiang Yuan in his mecha, with Jiang Yuan clearing the way. Arlo’s mecha was in the process of self-repair as it flew alongside.

The female voice of the announcements repeatedly issued death alerts, reminding the red and blue teams of their dwindling numbers.

Death alert after death alert sounded.

“Damn it, can you guys stay away from Jiang Yuan?” Bai Ming glanced at the number of survivors on their side (25/35). Aside from the two who had encountered a group of enemies and were eliminated, the rest had run into Jiang Yuan and Arlo and had been conveniently taken care of.

Class 2 started with three more members than the other team, but now they were down to only 25 people.

Looking at the other team, only one person had been eliminated, and it wasn’t even by them, but by the Mala desert worms!

“Screw it, after seeing the replay of your deaths, I’m out of here. I’m not going to provoke that monster, Jiang Yuan. Let’s go find some other stragglers instead!”

“Good idea!”

The Class 2 students were resigned to their fate. They had thought it would be an even match, but now they realized there was a powerhouse on the other team, which was truly disheartening.

“Hey, hey, hey! I’ve shared my coordinates, I’ve encountered a lone straggler!” a delighted voice suddenly came through the comm.

“It’s close, I’ll be right there!”

“Oh, I’m close too, only a kilometer away. I’ll come as well, let’s gang up on him!”

In the vast Mala Desert, a mecha was flying – this one belonged to Ji Rong, whose mecha was called “Dark Night.” If classified, it would be considered a typical assassin-type mecha. Unlike Jiang Yuan, who had rushed in without even buying a mecha, Ji Rong purchased this mecha as soon as he registered.

As Ji Rong flew, he quickly noticed five mechas approaching him. With five mechas converging on him simultaneously, Dark Night’s speed noticeably increased.

The five encircling Ji Rong grinned. What could his increased speed do? Among their five mechas, there were even light, agile models that could outpace Dark Night. Even with the speed boost, he wouldn’t be able to escape.

Dark Night flew to an open area and suddenly came to a halt.

The five encircling Ji Rong were perplexed. An assassin-type mecha should have stopped in a sandy area to have some cover for a sneak attack, not out in the open like this.

The pilot might still be disoriented, not yet fully adapted to the combination of the second mode and the cockpit.

Several people were also happy in their hearts. It was a great honor to eliminate an enemy. Since the opponent was weak, they could not be blamed, considering that Jiang Yuan killed nine of them by himself!

However, Ji Rong, who had been piloting real mechas since childhood, calmly spoke in a flat tone through the comm, “Hmm, I’ve encountered a few people…”

Before Ji Rong could finish, a panicked voice interrupted, “Wait for us, we’re almost there!”

“Hmph.” Ji Rong’s low chuckle came through the comm. “No need, I can handle this.”

With that, Ji Rong’s Dark Night mecha hovered in midair, its body slightly lowering. Seeing Ji Rong’s maneuvering, the five immediately shed their mocking attitude. Perhaps he wasn’t very familiar with the assassin-type mecha, but he was undoubtedly a seasoned pilot.

This stance clearly showed his professionalism!

“Tsk, looks a bit powerful, but surely he can’t be another Jiang Yuan, right?” one of the Class 2 students scoffed.

One second.

Two seconds.

Three seconds.

In the moment the five surrounded the Dark Night mecha, almost simultaneously, all six mechas sprang into action!

The Dark Night mecha suddenly increased its speed, kicking up a cloud of sand as it flew. Ji Rong drew the alloy knife at his waist and swept his gaze across the surrounding mechas.

Dark Night shot forward, wielding the weapon. It darted in, its attack speed like lightning.

“Bang!”

Bullets streaked towards Dark Night, but this mecha seemed to have eyes in the back of its head, directly evading the attack.

“Damn it!” the shooter cursed under their breath.

By this time, Dark Night had already charged at the nearest light-type mecha, unleashing a furious assault like a raging wind. Its attacks allowed no time for respite; even a tank-type mecha would only be able to withstand the blows by raising its defensive shield.

“What the… what are you all doing? Help me!” the targeted pilot cried, but as the words left his mouth, his mecha’s warning lights flashed, and it crashed to the ground.

“I’m starting to feel a bit uneasy. I have a feeling this isn’t going to end well,” one of the people who encircled Ji Rong muttered.

In the instant the first light-type mecha was destroyed, Ji Rong immediately charged toward another.

Ji Rong’s attacks, one after another – the moment the alloy blade connected with the opponent’s mecha, sparks flew! The ferocious assault left them unable to retaliate, and the second mecha was swiftly sliced through the core.

Evading the attacks of the others while striking them down! Dark Night moved like a shadow, appearing behind them every time.

Clang, clang, clang, clang!

Amid the shower of sparks, a heavy-type mecha used its defensive shield to block seven consecutive attacks, though its frame was now embedded in the sand. The exchange of fire continued.

Dark Night swiftly attacked again.

At the same time, the students who had been approaching the rendezvous point hurried over and witnessed…

Only four wrecked mechas on the sand, and a single tank-type mecha still struggling to hold on. In the moment it landed, the mecha with the [Passerby A123] label used a high-speed spin to continue the pursuit.

The tank-type mecha’s pilot was skilled; as it landed, it kicked up a cloud of sand, and Ji Rong retreated to avoid the debris, allowing the tank-type mecha a brief respite.

Bullets were useless against Dark Night, and Barney, the pilot of the tank-type mecha, realized his opponent was also a skilled close-quarters fighter, so he abandoned using guns and drew his own blade.

As both used their knives, the clashing of the alloy blades produced intense sparks with each impact.

“The Lion King?” Some of the students noticed the ID of the surviving Class 2 student… Wasn’t he a famous close-quarters combat specialist? Yet he was being suppressed and beaten by their own team.

Barney was struggling. He was known for his skills in close-quarters combat, and he especially liked piloting a tank-type mecha because it could withstand a few hits. But he never imagined his opponent would be this strong.

In the next instant, the opponent’s blade fell, and sparks suddenly appeared before Barney’s eyes – the mecha’s head had been sliced off!

Barney’s mouth fell open… What kind of person was this?

Hearing the system alert about “[Passerby A123]’s” rampage, the students rushing to Ji Rong’s aid were at a loss for words. After all, they had been moving at top speed, and it had been less than 10 minutes since Ji Rong said someone was after him.

The first one was a monster; at least he used guns, and his kills were quick. But now this? What was going on? Damn it!

“Is it too late for us to switch classes?”

“I don’t think we can switch classes…”

“With the first and second ones like this, I feel so much pressure!”

“Calm down, those two are just abnormal. Let’s just pretend our class only has 30 people. You’ll feel better…”

The sounds of battle gradually subsided, and Ji Rong noticed his comrades had arrived. He spoke in a low voice, “You’re here. Let’s go to the meeting point.”

“Okay…”

Once the group had gathered, the true battle between the red and blue teams began.

Jiang Yuan heard the alert about Ji Rong’s kills and was not surprised. After all, they had previously worked together on the Destiny. Knowing Ji Rong had such capabilities, Jiang Yuan found it unsurprising.

After the blue Class 2 lost another five members, they were down to only 20 people. Facing Jiang Yuan’s team, they were clearly outmatched, and bullets flew recklessly across the desert, kicking up sand and sparks.

“Jiang Yuan, cover me,” Ji Rong said in a low voice.

Hearing Ji Rong’s deep voice calling his name, Jiang Yuan hesitated for a moment before responding, “Okay.”

Under Jiang Yuan’s cover, Ji Rong attacked like a raging storm, leaving the opponents no chance to catch their breath.

Double kill.

Monster kill. (Three kills)

Do you wanna piece of me?1This is originally in English. (Seven-kill streak!)

The two had collaborated before, so the kill alerts were constantly sounding across the map. Though it was supposed to be a red-blue team battle, it had become a one-man show, with one providing cover and the other attacking – an unstoppable duo.

“Damn it! Is Jiang Yuan’s marksmanship superhuman? Did you see that? Precision shots!”

“Yeah… He was deflecting the bullets back…” Arlo’s face was pale. He was quite skilled himself, but he never imagined his classmates would include two absolute monsters, and of the most terrifying kind!

“We won just by lying down.”

The kill alerts flashed across the screen like a frenzy.

Jiang Yuan and Ji Rong easily and casually decimated Class 2.

“I see now why they use alt accounts… These two must be top-ranked players on the ladder, huh? Haha!”

“These are my classmates? I’m done.”

Jiang Yuan and Ji Rong’s coordination was flawless. Jiang Yuan’s barrage of long-range shots opened the path for Ji Rong’s relentless assault, and soon the remaining twenty opponents were completely annihilated.

Out of Class 2’s 35 members, 33 had been defeated by Jiang Yuan and Ji Rong. It was as if the entire battle had been a one-on-two showdown between the two of them against Class 2.

Of the final 20 kills, Ji Rong had 18, with only one on Jiang Yuan’s head. But the thing was, Jiang Yuan had made it effortless for him, each shot clearly aimed at creating openings for Ji Rong’s attacks. The 18 kills Ji Rong had achieved were all with Jiang Yuan’s support.

Were Betas this strong now?

Ji Rong couldn’t help but doubt life.

Soon after, Jiang Yuan also logged out of the game, reflecting on the intense battle. But with Alphonse’s help, his reaction speed had been lightning-fast, allowing him to anticipate the opponents’ next moves based on the slightest tells, making the fight feel almost effortless.

Jiang Yuan closed his eyes, pondering, then exited the gaming pod, his body covered in sweat and feeling slightly sore.

He knew the gaming pod put a heavy strain on the body. He glanced at the wall. Ji Rong was right next door. The Alpha’s aggressive onslaught while using the gaming pod must have exhausted him. That’s why Jiang Yuan had been willing to provide cover – he had felt a bit fatigued himself.

As soon as Jiang Yuan logged off, Ji Rong followed suit. In the game, Class 1 and Class 2 exchanged sorrowful glances, their eyes brimming with tears.

Class 1 felt bad for Class 2 being completely crushed, while Class 2 felt bad for Alexander2He is probably the one who died to the desert worm lol, a classmate from Class 1, no words needed to be spoken as they silently embraced, offering comfort.
