I woke up and got married Chapter 1

In the hospital room, Tang Jin crossed his legs, looking outside the door with a grin that almost drooled. “Man, after seeing so many women, I had no idea the rehab department had so many pretty girls. Tsk.”

Chi Suinian lowered his head and scooped up a spoonful of translucent white rice porridge. He had just woken up, and his arms were still stiff. A simple scooping motion trembled so much that he seemed to have Parkinson’s disease.

Forget it.

He dropped the spoon, watching Tang Jin still gawking outside like a pervert. Chi Suinian really wanted to kick him out.

Unfortunately, he woke up half-paralyzed, his limbs weak, and even moving a little was hard. He could only frown in irritation. “You have no shame.”

The sound of his voice was raspy and unpleasant.

Like two rusty pieces of scrap iron scraping against each other.

Chi Suinian frowned in discomfort.

…It was the fifth day since waking up from the car accident, and not a single thing had gone smoothly.

“What does this have to do with being shameless? I’m genuinely appreciating beauty,” Tang Jin paused, then suddenly turned around with a sly grin, raising his eyebrows at Chi Suinian and even whistling like a rogue. “You’ve been lying here for months. After you’re discharged… will everything still work?”

Chi Suinian gave him a dark, cold glare.

Tang Jin immediately raised his hands in surrender.

He turned back to the door, sighing. “But honestly, it’s a pity. Old Lu just went on a business trip, and you woke up right after. Such bad timing. He’s been waiting for you to wake up.”

Among the Lu family, there were only two people around Chi Suinian: one was a sworn enemy, and the other, among the group of rich kids genuinely hoping he’d wake up, was probably Tang Jin and their other close friend, Lu Heng.

Chi Suinian had been friends with these two since childhood, watching each other grow up, as close as brothers, sharing the same bad habits. Their bond hadn’t changed over the years.

“When did he start doing business…” Chi Suinian’s throat was painfully dry, and he paused before continuing with difficulty, “Did his dad hit him too hard?”

Lu Heng was the only one among his peers who had been subjected to the “spare the rod, spoil the child”1The phrase “spare the rod, spoil the child” means that if parents do not discipline their children (often implied through physical punishment, represented by “the rod”), the children will grow up spoiled or misbehaved. It suggests that discipline is necessary for proper upbringing and that without it, children may lack respect or guidance. approach by his father. He had been beaten regularly for twenty years. Instead of becoming successful, he’d developed a rebellious streak, with a brain too small to take over the family business.

The so-called business trip was probably just his family forcing him to go through the motions.

Tang Jin opened a bag of chips and tossed some into his mouth, chewing as he spoke, “What dad? You’re still groggy. Lu Zhiyue’s an orphan. His dad died ages ago.”

Who?

Chi Suinian didn’t get it at first. “Lu Zhiyue?”

“Yeah, who else? You didn’t think I was talking about Lu Heng, right? That guy smashed up a karaoke bar last week. His dad’s locked him up; he can’t get out. He told me to send his regards.”

“…”

The Lu Zhiyue Tang Jin mentioned had been Chi Suinian’s sworn enemy since they were kids. From their school days, they had been at each other’s throats, competing for over twenty years. The whole of Jin City knew they couldn’t stand each other.

Even at social events, the hosts didn’t dare invite both of them.

Hoping he’d wake up?

Ha.

Chi Suinian processed that statement like an exam question and understood.

—Lu Zhiyue was itching for a fight.

Probably because Chi Suinian had been out of commission for half a year, and Lu Zhiyue had no one to spar with, so he got bored and came to taunt him at the hospital.

What a jerk.

Chi Suinian almost laughed out of anger. “Did he come to challenge me?”

Other than that, he couldn’t think of any reason why Lu Zhiyue would visit him.

Tang Jin shook the bag of chips, pouring the crumbs into his mouth. He mumbled through a full mouth, “Challenge? Nah… You two still fighting at home? Lu Zhiyue said you guys are pretty affectionate.”

Chi Suinian snorted. “Yeah, he’s very affectionate with my fists.”

Tang Jin looked at his thin, frail arms. “…”

He tossed the empty bag into the trash can and muttered, “I don’t know why you two even got married. You keep fighting, and one of you is bound to end up a widower…”

Chi Suinian grabbed the spoon and threw it at him. “Shut up. What nonsense are you spouting?”

He was too weak, though. The spoon didn’t even reach Tang Jin before it fell weakly onto the bed, splashing a little porridge on the sheets.

Tang Jin picked up the spoon lazily and clicked his tongue. “What are you so shy about? Next week’s your wedding anniversary. You woke up just in time. Lu Zhiyue called this morning, said he’s catching the afternoon flight back. Hope you can manage to meet your husband without looking like you’re on your deathbed—Whoa, what are you doing?!”

Chi Suinian, summoning strength from who knows where, yanked Tang Jin over to the bed and took a deep breath. “What the hell are you talking about? When did I ever… with Lu Zhiyue…”

He couldn’t even finish the sentence.

Forget the fact that same-sex marriage wasn’t legal in China, even if it were, the thought of him and Lu Zhiyue in a relationship was criminal.

Tang Jin sighed and spread his hands helplessly. “How am I talking nonsense? You and Lu Zhiyue have been married for nearly a year. Everyone in Jin City knows. Why would I lie to you? What do I gain from lying…”

Tang Jin’s words trailed off, his eyes widening in shock. “Wait, hold on a minute…”

He gestured as if to calm Chi Suinian down, clearly flustered. “What year do you think it is?”

Chi Suinian reflexively gave the date.

The next second, Tang Jin bolted out of the room like his pants were on fire, yelling, “Doctor! Doctor! Something’s wrong!”

“…”

“The patient’s brain was affected by the car accident, causing memory dysfunction. The feedback mechanisms were disrupted, leading to an inability to store information…”

“Stop!”

Tang Jin rubbed his temples, frustrated. “Please, speak plain Chinese. I don’t understand a word you’re saying!”

The middle-aged doctor adjusted his thick glasses. “In simple terms, he’s experiencing amnesia.”

Tang Jin stared blankly. “But he still remembers me?”

The doctor pushed his glasses again. “It’s selective amnesia.”

Chi Suinian: “…”

This was a ridiculous soap opera.

“Alright.” Chi Suinian, growing more annoyed by the second, glared coldly at Tang Jin. “If you keep up this act, get out.”

“I’m not—”

“Mr. Chi,” the doctor said firmly. “According to your test results, you do have damage to the memory center of your brain. There was significant bleeding, so memory loss is a completely normal symptom. We’ll do our best to treat you. Please rest assured and focus on recovery.”

Chi Suinian’s expression hardened. He didn’t believe a single word.

He remembered the car accident clearly. Yes, there had been a crash, but it was minor.

That day, he had attended an auto show and fell in love with a particular sports car, even preparing to sign the contract. But then Lu Zhiyue appeared out of nowhere and, using his connections with the organizers, easily snatched it away.

This wasn’t the first time Lu Zhiyue had pulled something like this. For the past few years, whenever Chi Suinian wanted something, Lu Zhiyue would swoop in and interfere.

And he didn’t just take them; he would send every single thing to the Chi family, under the guise of letting Chi Suinian “appreciate” them.

When the car arrived, Chi Suinian was home and nearly smashed the million-dollar vehicle in a rage. He called Lu Zhiyue, left him a threat, and drove off, ready to fight.

But on the way, someone ran a red light. Chi Suinian swerved to avoid them and ended up crashing into a traffic island.

He was lucky. Neither he nor the car was damaged. So, where was this amnesia coming from?

He thought these two were just spewing nonsense.

Even if he was disabled or paralyzed, there was no way he’d ever share a bed with Lu Zhiyue.

Chi Suinian would never reconcile with Lu Zhiyue in his life.

“Look…” Tang Jin was still in shock. “That all happened a year ago. Suinian, you’ve really lost your memory.”

“…???” What kind of horror story was this?

Chi Suinian was still in shock when a figure appeared at the door of the hospital room.

“Mr. Lu.”

“Mm,” a deep voice responded.

A tall figure stepped into the room.

With those same infuriatingly handsome features, Lu Zhiyue entered, his usual cold demeanor intact, his dark eyes fixed on Chi Suinian.

Chi Suinian was exhausted, having been mentally drained by both Tang Jin and the doctor. But seeing Lu Zhiyue gave him a sudden rush of adrenaline. Propping himself up, he lazily glanced over at him.

Chi Suinian still hadn’t gotten over the grudge from the night of the car accident.

The years of constant rivalry and competition felt more vivid than ever.

Lu Zhiyue’s sharp eyes swept over Tang Jin before landing on Chi Suinian. His cold gaze sent shivers down Chi Suinian’s spine, his thin lips moving slightly, his voice chilling as he spoke.

“You’re awake.”

Lu Zhiyue sat down at the edge of the bed, raising his hand as if to touch Chi Suinian’s hand.

Chi Suinian dodged swiftly, moving even faster than before his injury. The sudden movement gave him goosebumps all over. “What are you doing here?”

“Mr. Lu came specifically to see you.” A head popped out from behind Lu Zhiyue, dressed like an assistant or bodyguard. “Madam, you’ve finally woken up.”

Chi Suinian froze.

Madam, your ass!

Lu Zhiyue had come specifically to disgust him, hadn’t he?

If he weren’t injured, he would’ve punched him already. Chi Suinian clenched his fists, barely holding back the urge to throttle the man, and gritted out, “Get out.”

Lu Zhiyue paused for a moment, his gaze lingering on Chi Suinian’s face, his eyes darkening slightly.

Chi Suinian was so furious that his head throbbed and his chest tightened. He took a couple of deep breaths, trying to calm down. Just as he raised a hand to rub his temples, his wrist was suddenly caught.

The touch was cool, and the man’s hand completely encircled his wrist.

“I’ll help you.” Lu Zhiyue said.

Chi Suinian froze for two seconds before angrily shaking off his hand. “Lu Zhiyue, are you insane?”

“Um… Lu Zhiyue,” Tang Jin carefully interjected in the odd atmosphere between them. “Suinian seems to have amnesia. His memory is stuck a few years back, so he probably can’t accept your relationship right now…”

Lu Zhiyue’s gaze lingered on Chi Suinian’s face for a moment, filled with suspicion, maybe even curiosity, making Chi Suinian extremely uncomfortable.

Just as he was about to drag his injured body over to teach Lu Zhiyue a lesson, a hand pressed down on his shoulder. Then another hand was placed on his aching temples, massaging with just the right amount of pressure.

What the hell…

“It’s fine,” Lu Zhiyue suddenly said.

“…?”

Chi Suinian blinked in surprise, lifting his head. The man’s tall figure loomed over him, his handsome, chiseled features close, with a foggy look in his deep black eyes.

“Even if you’ve lost your memory, you’re still my legal spouse.”

“I won’t abandon you.”

Chi Suinian: …………

Lu Zhiyue can go to hell.
