The following morning, after Wu Ruo and Hei Xuanyi ate breakfast, he invited Hei Xuanyi to take the same horse carriage as him to Xishan Theatre.

After getting onto the horse carriage, Wu Ruo suddenly felt as if his robes today had gotten tighter. The abdominal area had been laced especially tight¹Chinese robes usually have parts to it, where different portions of it can be adjusted looser or tighter according to the shape of your body., causing him to have some difficulty breathing.

Hei Xuanyi saw that he was wriggling around like a white silkworm, and couldn’t help but frown.

Wu Ruo noticed Hei Xuanyi’s gaze on him, and smiled self-mockingly: “I’ve gained weight again.”

Hei Xuanyi took a look at his abdomen that had been laced tight with a belt made of silver, and said with a deep voice: “Sit over here.”

Wu Ruo subconsciously propped his body up, but what could he do about his build that was overly cumbersome? Even if he used all his strength, he still couldn’t prop his own body up.

He breathed in and out, resting for a moment, before exerting all his strength again. With all his attention focused on his strength, he didn’t seem to notice in the slightest that at this moment in Hei Xuanyi’s eyes, he looked like a fat giant panda that couldn’t get up. It made one want to drag him into their arms for an intense cuddle.

After Wu Ruo tried twice more to no avail, he rolled his eyes: “My lord²大爷 (da ye): previously footnoted when Wu Ruo used it as a swear word. You can use it to refer to your uncle, or it can also refer to a rich man’s son., can’t you come and sit by my side yourself?”

Knowing full well that he had mobility problems, Hei Xuanyi still wanted him to shift spots in such a small and narrow space, he was deliberately making things difficult for Wu Ruo.

The corners of Hei Xuanyi’s lips curled up subtly, as he rose to sit by Wu Ruo’s side, then Hei Xuanyi placed his hands on Wu Ruo’s stomach, rubbing it.

“What are you doing?” Wu Ruo glared at Hei Xuanyi angrily, then he immediately felt a thread of spiritual energy entering his body to feed the parasite. In an instance, his abdomen loosened up a lot, and it was no longer hard to breathe.

He breathed out, looking at Hei Xuanyi, and asked: “When you rub my stomach, are you trying to get the parasites in my body to gather together?”

Hei Xuanyi didn’t say anything, patting his bouncy stomach, and he sat back at his original seat, satisfied.

“…” the corners of Wu Ruo’s lips twitched. Did Hei Xuanyi know that if he kept patting Wu Ruo’s stomach, it would worsen Wu Ruo’s impression of him?

When they arrived at Xishan Theatre, a light snowfall filled the skies, however, it didn’t affect the passion of those who had come to watch a show. One carriage after another stopped at the theatre’s main entrance.

Wu Ruo and Hei Xuanyi got down from the carriage, their fat body and hideous face³The author means Wu Ruo’s fat body and Hei Xuanyi’s hideous face, in case there’s any confusion. immediately attracting the attention of the people in their vicinity.

“Quick, look, that big fatty should be the Wu family’s Southern main estate’s sixth young master, right?” someone softly said to their companion beside them.

“His body is so fat, it has to be him. In Gaoling City, other than him, there’s no one else who is fatter than him. Hmm? Is that man beside him wearing the black cloak his husband? Wow, he looks so frightening. He looks exactly like the show described, he’s really so ugly. I think there was no woman willing to marry him, that’s why he chose to marry a big fatty.”

“Even if he married a big fatty, he should marry a female one. Now, what’s the point of marrying a man⁴娶回家 (qu hui jia): the phrase is used when men marry a wife into their family, where ‘hui jia’ means ‘to bring home’ (in this context). When a woman marries out of her family, the phrase used for women is 嫁出去 (jia chu qu), where ‘chu qu’ means ‘to go out/leave’.? Don’t you think it’s disgusting?”

Wu Ruo swept a cold glance over them.

The people discussing them suddenly let out blood-curdling screams and were inexplicably beaten black and blue.

The ones being beaten couldn’t see who was beating them, clutched their faces, and yelled at the empty spot without any people: “Ah! Who, who’s hitting us?”

“Which bastard is hitting us? If you’ve got the balls, come out and face us! Ah!” This person had only just finished speaking when his face was punched another time. He was beaten to the ground on the spot and couldn’t get up.

It scared the other person getting beaten up so much that they scattered like a swarm of bees, everyone leaving in their own horse carriages.

Wu Ruo narrowed his eyes. He couldn’t see the ones beating up those people as well, so he took a glance at Hei Xuanyi, remembering that this person could control spirits. And also, a hoard of wandering souls and wild ghosts with high cultivation often followed by his side. So, he guessed that those people were probably being beaten up by ghosts. It was a pity he currently had no cultivation, so he couldn’t see what the situation was.

“Who is so bold to stir trouble at Xishan Theatre?”

The sound of someone shouting angrily came from inside the main entrance. Following closely, five young men walked out.

Notes: in a few paragraphs of this chapter, the pronouns in the translations were a bit ambiguous so I took the liberty of putting in the character names although the original Chinese text doesn’t do so. In Chinese, some pronouns are omitted and some are written in. However, it’s clear what refers to who.

Because of the differences in English as a language and the awkwardness when pronouns are omitted, I had to write them in during translations, but writing them in made the sentences a little ambiguous. Therefore, I chose to write in character names in certain sentences, although the original Chinese text doesn’t do so.
