So much had happened in these five days. And he was terribly sleep-deprived and exhausted.
(…First, a shower. If I stay like this, I’ll catch a cold.)
Amane undressed and entered the shower, letting the hot water wash over his body and hair. He felt revived after the shower. As he dried off, he put on a T-shirt and shorts from the vanity.
As he exited the bathroom, still drying his hair, he noticed Kouki was still half-naked, gazing out the window at the rain.
(Ah, he doesn’t have a change of clothes.)
Realising this, Amane returned to the bathroom. He grabbed a bathrobe and brought it back.
“Here, put this on.”
Kouki caught the bathrobe he tossed him. “Thank you very much.”
Putting on the bathrobe and tying the sash, Kouki approached Amane. “The rain doesn’t seem to be letting up.”
Up close, Amane noticed the wet hair made Kouki’s already chiselled features appear even more striking. It was almost like a stranger who was standing there.
(Don’t let your guard down. His pheromones are leaking out.)
Clicking his tongue softly, Amane reached for a cigarette on the coffee table, putting it between his lips. As he tried to light it, he realised the lighter was missing.
“Looking for a lighter?”
Kouki, ever attentive, inquired.
“Yes.”
As Amane searched with his eyes, Kouki bent down and retrieved the fallen lighter from under the table. He handed it to him. “Here you go.”
Reaching out to take it, Amane and Kouki’s hands collided, causing sparks to fly.
“…!”
Electricity seemed to crackle where their hands had touched. Amane quickly pulled his hand away. But it was too late. As he looked up, his eyes met Kouki’s, who seemed to be caught off guard. His heart suddenly pounded loudly.
(This is dangerous.)
His heartbeat was racing rapidly. His breathing became shallow and sweat beaded on his temples.
Recognizing the familiar ‘symptoms’, Amane forcibly broke their locked gaze and started backing away.
Clenching his molars, he tried to ride out the episode. But the palpitations wouldn’t subside, and his body temperature kept rising.
(Something’s wrong…)
It was true that he was in his heat cycle. But he had just taken his suppressant this morning.
So why…?
It was the same during that ‘special incident’ with Kouki. The moment he grabbed his arm, the drug’s effect had worn off.
Is it because Kouki is an alpha?
No. He had shaken hands with high-ranking alpha career officials before, and the drug’s effect had never been nullified like this.
This kind of irregularity only happens between him and Kouki.
What does this mean?
Suddenly, Kouki’s past words echoed in her confused mind.
――—Could it be… that we’re ‘soulmates’?
(…No way.)
That couldn’t be. There was no way the third son of the prestigious Shutou family, a top alpha, and himself, a Stray Omega, could be ‘soulmates’. That was just an urban legend, a fanciful notion that had grown embellished.
But if that were the case, then what was this overwhelming urge threatening to consume him?
His breathing… became laboured. His body is hot. It’s so hot.
(It feels so hot!)
“…Honjou-san?”
Lifted by his hoarse voice, Amane looked up. Kouki, too, was sweating and frowning in discomfort.
(He’s… also going into a rut.)
Realising this, he yelled, “Get out! Hurry!”, pointing towards the entrance.
“Honjou-san?”
“Just get out, quickly!”
Without listening to his bewildered pleas, he shoved him forcefully.
“Wait! Please wait!”
“Shut up!”
Ignoring his entreaties, he kept pushing him, herding him towards the entrance. With one hand, he opened the door, and with the other, he shoved Kouki out.
As soon as he expelled him from the room, he slammed the door shut and locked it. Leaning his back against the door, he slowly sank down to the floor. He hugged his trembling body with his tingling hands. Clenching his teeth, he fought to suppress the violent urges raging within him.
(Calm down! Settle down!)
As he desperately prayed, the door behind him was pounded on strongly.
“Please open up!”
It was Kouki’s voice.
“Honjou-san, please open the door!”
There was the sound of the doorknob rattling, followed by another series of loud knocks.
“Shut up! Be quiet!”
He shouted from his crouched position. This time, a loud thud echoed as Kouki seemed to be throwing his body against the door in his frustration at being locked out.
“If you don’t open it right now, I’ll break down the door!”
With that declaration, Kouki started kicking the door viciously – Bam! Bam! The door creaked and groaned under the alpha’s forceful blows.
Bam! Bam!
Feeling the impacts against his back, Amane curled up, clutching his head.
“Why won’t you open it? Are you afraid of me?”
“…”
The provocation made Amane’s temples throb with heat. Amane abruptly stood up. His trembling hands unlocked the door and turned the knob. Driven by anger, he yanked the door open.
“A brat like you? There’s nothing to be afraid of!”
The moment he shouted, his arm was grabbed and he was pulled forward.
“But you’re still… trembling.”
Pulled into a tight embrace against his bathrobe-clad chest, an electric current seemed to course through his body. Intoxicated by the alpha pheromones wafting from Kouki, his head spun.
“I like you.”
Hot breath brushed his ear.
“I like you.”
(…He likes me?)
Slowly lifting his gaze, he met Kouki’s feverish eyes. His own flushed face was reflected in the bluish-grey irises.
“It doesn’t matter if you’re an alpha or omega. I just like you.”
The straightforward, passionate confession, devoid of pretence, sent a shiver down Amane’s spine.
Don’t say it so casually.
You alphas have no idea of the suffering us Stray Omegas endure.
Looked down upon, used, and ultimately trampled on like discarded cigarette butts.
No matter how hard we struggle, we can never climb out of that abyss of despair and ingrained inferiority.
What would you, born with privilege, ever understand?!
He wanted to lash out. But his throat felt constricted, and no words came out.
“Honjou-san, I like you.”
Stop saying that. He doesn’t want to hear it anymore!
“I like y-“
Amane pulled Kouki’s head down, cutting off his words with a kiss, almost biting at his lips.

*Translator’s Note: I love the concept of ‘soulmate’ that our author brought forward in her version of omegaverse. I think it’s kinda like ‘imprinting’ at first. But later, I found that it’s actually different. It’s unique only to the novels and manga by Iwamoto Kaoru. By the way, Merry Christmas, guys! -K
