Chapter 15: Almost Failed
At this moment, countless freshmen were already standing inside their magic squares. Some were as nervous as I was, while others seemed to be brimming with confidence. Some were even flaunting their skills, while others wore expressions of disdain.
Just then, the booming voice of the woman in the sky sounded again, “The performance of this year’s freshmen in the test has surprised the academy, and everyone has shown excellent abilities, making the academy very proud. However, there were some who caused too much destruction…”
Destruction… too much?
I had a vague feeling of unease.
“We are here to subdue demons and monsters, not to demolish houses. If this were a real mission, how would we explain it to the homeowners?”
I silently lowered my head, admitting that I was in the wrong.
My heart started racing. This was bad. What if I didn’t pass? As long as it wasn’t a written exam, I always ranked at the top. If I didn’t pass this time, it would be more embarrassing than failing the college entrance exam.
The other students began looking around, as if trying to figure out who was being referred to. Some glanced my way, and I followed their lead by looking at others.
Is it you? Is it you? Definitely not me.
“Considering that it’s her first test and she lacks experience, we’ll let it pass. We hope she won’t make the same mistake next time. Everyone can leave now. Based on the results of this test, the academy will divide you into different houses, and you will receive your admission letters in due course. We hope you will find your life goals and wonderful partners in the academy’s upcoming studies and life…”
“Hush~” Someone immediately whistled.
“Yay~”
“Hooray~”
I was startled. Did they just mention finding a wonderful partner? Was the academy actually encouraging us to date?
No wonder it was a divine and demon academy. They were truly more advanced and enlightened than our ordinary schools. I wanted to give this academy a thousand thumbs up. Oh my god! You guys are amazing!
The students began to leave one after another, and their conversations could still be heard.
“Who do you think she was talking about? Is it really such a big deal for a little devil to demolish a house?”
“You can’t say she has a low level of ability.”
“I bet it was a guy who likes to be rough.”
“That’s not necessarily true. Girls can be even scarier when they get crazy.”
“Get lost! Go back and watch the recording to find out!”
My heart sank. It was… over.
I had forgotten that Si Yino had mentioned it was a live broadcast.
Thump! Thump! Zombie Girl’s zombie jumped past me once again, but this time, it stopped. It was Zombie Girl who halted, and with her smoky makeup, she gave me a scrutinizing look. “I never thought you’d actually pass.”
I looked down, dejected, at her and her zombie companion.
Zombie Girl raised an eyebrow in displeasure and gave me a push. “What’s wrong with you? Who wants to see that lifeless face?”
I lifted my gaze and met her eyes. “But I thought you didn’t want anything to do with me?” The other students, excited and exhilarated, were leaving as if in a hurry to watch the replay. No one paid attention to Zombie Girl and me.
Zombie Girl chuckled and fixed her eyes on me. “Well, you’re just a human, yet you managed to pass. I’m quite curious about you. We do seem to have a connection. My name is Zhang Susu, a descendant of Zhang the Celestial Master. People call me Black Girl.”
“I’m Xia Xiaolan, just an ordinary human. I’m not descended from anyone…” I weakly extended my right hand, and she placed her hand with its black-painted nails on top of mine. “I know. Don’t show that face to me. It’s even uglier than my zombie’s.”
I glanced at the zombie, and the zombie boy let out a sound, “Uh…”
I don’t know what possessed me, but I blurted out, “Is he your boyfriend?”
Black Girl’s eyes widened at the mention of it.
I smacked my forehead. “I’m sorry, I lost my train of thought. I’m the one who was named for causing the house destruction…”
“Ah? It’s you!” Black Girl burst into laughter. “Hahaha—hahaha—” She laughed without restraint, not holding back at all. “I’m laughing at you, but don’t take it personally. That’s just how I am. As a mortal, I think it’s quite remarkable that you passed.” She patted my shoulder, her gestures akin to those of a tomboy. “Well then, goodbye!” After saying that, Black Girl bounced away with her zombie.
I looked at her in a state of confusion. She laughed at me and then went to witness my embarrassment? However, I couldn’t bring myself to dislike her. Instead, I felt that she was a trustworthy and friendly friend.
But the thought of everyone witnessing my embarrassing moment today made me feel uneasy. It seemed challenging to get along with these offspring of gods and demons.
“Hoo!” Suddenly, Xiao Bai’s colossal form reappeared in front of me. Si Yino, Mao Mao, and Jiang Yan leaped down together, while Qing Ming jumped up from the steps below. They happily surrounded me, exclaiming, “Congratulations!”
Seeing them, I felt a warm sensation enveloping me. Although we had just met on the first day, they treated me so kindly!
“Xiao Lan, you’re amazing!” Mao Mao exclaimed, gripping my hands with excitement. “No exam has ever been more entertaining than yours!”
“En, en!” Qing Ming nodded vigorously.
That… was it! How explosive was my performance? It could easily rival a Hollywood blockbuster!
En! Even though I barely passed, it was highly entertaining! Screw the rules.
Jiang Yan raised his thumb while holding a blood bag in his hand. “Congratulations on passing!”
“Congratulations, Xiaolan…” Si Yino whispered softly from beneath her long bangs.
Mao Mao immediately hooked her arm around mine. “Let’s go! Let’s celebrate!” She pulled me up and hopped onto the massive body of Xiao Bai. Following suit, Si Yino and Jiang Yan also joined us on board. However, Qing Ming hopped down the steps on his own.
As Xiao Bai took off, I glanced at the small figure hopping on the steps with confusion. “Why isn’t Qing Ming coming up?”
“Ah!” Before anyone could explain, we all let out a sigh together. Mao Mao looked at Qing Ming’s figure with sympathy. “Qing Ming senior has a severe fear of heights.”
“Fear of heights?” I raised an eyebrow. “Oh, well, that’s alright.”
“Why is it alright?” Mao Mao grew anxious. “He’s a dragon! A fear of heights means he can’t fly!”
Suddenly, I felt that the situation was more serious than I thought.
“That’s why he repeated a year.” Jiang Yan shook his head, the tube from the blood bag in his mouth. “Actually, his strength is not weak, but he can’t fly. What good is a dragon who can’t fly among the Dragon Clan? Ah…”
“Ah…” we all sighed together once again. It seemed like everyone had their own special reasons for not being able to advance.
Just like me, I’m not dumb, but I couldn’t perform well on the college entrance exam…
Unbeknownst to us, evening had already arrived, and the residential area appeared particularly lively. As we flew back, many people stood at the cabin’s entrance to welcome the newcomers who passed the exam. They pulled out firecrackers and set them off, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Compared to our cabin, it was much quieter.
Mao Mao ran to the refrigerator and opened it, only to find that it was filled with Jiang Yan’s blood bags…
“How could you guys eat all the snacks!” Mao Mao turned around and glared at the guys. Jiang Yan held the blood bag and looked away, while Qing Ming sat back on the sofa, pretending not to hear, and started wiping the table. The table was already so clean that you could see your reflection, for goodness’ sake!
