Zhou Zhou absentmindedly sat through a class, feeling the need to devise a strategic plan on how to pursue Cheng Che.
Firstly, he definitely couldn’t expose his Omega identity so soon. What if Cheng Che suddenly found him annoying and reported him? What would he do then?
But he also couldn’t pursue Cheng Che as an Alpha, right? Cheng Che would be even less likely to pay attention to him.
After much consideration, Zhou Zhou decided it might be best to first become friends with Cheng Che. Once they had a good relationship, he could gradually reveal everything and take things from there.
But when he thought about his previous interactions with Cheng Che, he felt like he might be better off being mute.
Time passed calmly. Blah blah blah….
Yu Yang was really getting on Zhou Zhou’s nerves. He had come to bother Zhou Zhou again.
Although he usually came to bother Zhou Zhou as soon as class ended, Zhou Zhou felt that he was particularly annoying today. Just looking at him made him want to hit him.
“What are you doing? I’m an Omega. Is it appropriate for you to be so close to me?” Zhou Zhou took the two oranges from Yu Yang’s hand as he peeled one and asked.
“But in other people’s eyes, you’re still an Alpha. Do you want to get close to other Alphas instead? Wouldn’t that be even more suspicious?” Yu Yang analysed.
“You have a point.”
Zhou Zhou ate the orange. The golden flesh was pressed against his soft, pink lips before slowly being bitten into by his snow-white teeth. Yu Yang watched him and said thoughtfully, “Back when I didn’t know you were an Omega, I always felt something was off about you. Now I finally understand. I must have sensed that you shouldn’t be an Alpha.”
As he spoke, he reached out and pinched Zhou Zhou’s soft cheek.
“Damn it! How dare you touch me?!” Zhou Zhou suddenly lifted his head and stared at Yu Yang with indignation. He shoved the orange peel into Yu Yang’s mouth. Then, he gripped Yu Yang’s neck and pressed him down to the ground. “No one is allowed to pinch my face yet! You’re no exception!”
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry!” With the orange peel in his mouth, Yu Yang mumbled an apology, “Don’t be mad anymore. If Cheng Che sees you like this, it won’t look good!”
Zhou Zhou immediately let go and lowered his head to straighten his clothes. “You reminded me, you reminded me. I shouldn’t be acting like this…”
He hadn’t finished his sentence when that melodious voice sounded from behind again, “Zhou Zhou.”
Fuck!
Zhou Zhou turned around in a daze and saw Cheng Che holding a stack of papers, looking at him.
Although Zhou Zhou knew that Cheng Che must have called him by his full name, he couldn’t help but automatically interpret Cheng Che’s ‘Zhou Zhou’ as ‘Zhouzhou.’
Damn it, this is the first time Cheng Che has called my name! My name can sound so nice!
Zhou Zhou wanted to call him ‘Cheche’, but he didn’t have the courage. It would be too embarrassing. He was afraid Cheng Che would throw the stack of papers at his face.
“Is there something you need, Cheng Che?” Zhou Zhou put on a skillful smile, his eyes narrowing playfully. “I was wondering whose voice was so pleasant. Turns out it’s you.”
Yu Yang silently removed the orange peel from his mouth and rolled his eyes before walking away to dispose of the trash.
“The chemistry teacher wants to see you in the office,” Cheng Che said.
“Oh, you’re going to all this trouble to deliver the message. I’ll head there right away!” Zhou Zhou said, audaciously offering the orange he held as he winked. “Want an orange? I bought it. It’s really sweet.”
Yu Yang, who had just returned after throwing away the orange peel, wished he could sew up Zhou Zhou’s deceiving mouth. The orange was clearly not bought by him!
“Thank you,” Cheng Che took the intact orange from Zhou Zhou’s hand and added, “You performed poorly on this exam. The chemistry teacher is quite angry.”
“It’s alright, how much worse can it get? I’ve passed with 23 points before. It can’t possibly go any lower,” Zhou Zhou boasted, seeming quite proud.
Yu Yang was about to advise Zhou Zhou not to set unrealistic expectations when he heard Cheng Che calmly say, “This time it’s 18.”
Zhou Zhou’s eyes rolled back as he leaned back and spoke in a hollow voice, “Yu Yang… accompany me to the office…”
Yu Yang grabbed him, crying out in pain and frustration, “Zhou Zhou! I’ve been telling you not to play ‘Five in a Row’ with your desk partner during chemistry class! Why didn’t you listen!”
Cheng Che glanced at their retreating figures. He then took his exam paper back to the classroom. He handed the paper to the chemistry class representative to distribute and returned to his seat at the back. A gentle breeze blew in from the window. Cheng Che peeled the orange Zhou Zhou had given him and put a segment in his mouth. He turned to look at the warm golden evening sun outside as the wind ruffled his hair. The scent of fresh oranges filled the air around him.
Then Cheng Che spat out the segment of orange from his mouth.
It was so sour he wanted to curse.
He gathered up the remaining oranges, turned slightly, and threw them all into the trash bin at the back of the classroom. Zhou Zhou’s cheerful and smiling “I bought it. It’s really sweet” echoed in his ears.
“Not a single truthful word,” Cheng Che muttered under his breath, “Little liar.”

*GLOSSARY:
- ‘Zhou Zhou’ [周舟] vs. ‘Zhouzhou’ [舟舟]: In Chinese culture, it is common to double someone’s name, creating a nickname or affectionate term, as a form of endearment or familiarity. These doubled names are often used among friends, family, or in casual social settings. They can convey a sense of closeness and intimacy and are often used to show affection or camaraderie.
The practice of doubling names is not exclusive to Chinese culture; it exists in various forms in different cultures around the world. In Chinese, these doubled names are known as “reduplicated” or “repeated” names. They are typically created by repeating a single syllable of a person’s given name or by repeating the entire name.
For example:
(a) Yangyang – This could be formed by repeating the single syllable “Yang” from the person’s name.
(b) Zhouzhou – Similarly, “Zhouzhou” could be formed by repeating the single syllable “Zhou.”
The doubled names are often affectionate and are used to create a sense of warmth and familiarity between individuals. It’s a way of expressing closeness and fondness for the person, similar to using a nickname in many Western cultures.
- The game ‘Five in a Row’: known as Gomoku, also called Gobang. Gomoku is a two-player strategy board game traditionally played with a paper and pencil or on a grid board. The objective of the game is to be the first player to achieve a continuous sequence of five of their own pieces horizontally, vertically, or diagonally on the board.
Here are the basic rules of Gomoku:
(a) The game is played on a grid board, usually 15×15 or 19×19 squares.
(b) Two players take turns, with one player using black stones (or markers) and the other using white stones (or markers).
(c) Players take turns placing their stones on the intersections of the grid lines, trying to create a line of five of their stones in a row.
(d) The game continues until one player achieves a row of five stones in a row, vertically, horizontally, or diagonally, or until the board is filled, resulting in a draw.
(e) To prevent an endless game, some variations of Gomoku have rules regarding overlines, where players can’t create rows longer than five, or they may lose the game.
Gomoku is a simple yet strategic game that requires players to think ahead and plan their moves to both win and prevent their opponent from winning. It’s a popular game in many countries and can be played casually or competitively. There are also computer versions of Gomoku that allow people to play against artificial intelligence or other players online.
