Zhou Zhou didn’t want to go. It was the first time he didn’t want to go to the self-study room with Cheng Che.

He knew that Cheng Che was probably going to confront him. He could almost guess what Cheng Che would say. It would be something like, “I’m sorry for the misunderstanding earlier. But I’m with another omega now. So we can’t be too close in the future.”

Zhou Zhou didn’t want to hear it. He didn’t have the emotional strength to accept these words from Cheng Che in person. He was afraid that he might cry and that this time, Cheng Che wouldn’t take any actions to comfort him. So, as soon as they entered the self-study room, before Cheng Che could speak, Zhou Zhou eagerly started the topic, “So… the results for last Friday’s monthly exam are out. I passed chemistry.”

Cheng Che closed the door and turned to face him, looking down, “Hmm.”

Zhou Zhou bit his lip. With a forced determination, he continued, “I’ve been working on the test paper you gave me. And I’ve been reviewing the problems. I’ve been trying hard. Even the teacher said I’ve improved.”

“I know,” Cheng Che replied in a detached tone.

Cheng Che’s indifferent response made Zhou Zhou completely lose his composure. His eyes immediately welled up with tears. But he quickly looked down to hide them. He couldn’t stop himself from sniffing back his emotions. After thinking for a moment, he decided it was better to speak up before Cheng Che confronted him. This way, he wouldn’t put Cheng Che in a difficult position and he wouldn’t feel too embarrassed either.

“I understand that I got too close to you earlier,” Zhou Zhou said with a lowered head. His eyebrows furrowed. His heart ached and tightened. His voice quivered, “I’m truly sorry for not considering your feelings. If I had known you were so uncomfortable, I shouldn’t have asked you to help me with tutoring in the first place. Yu Yang had already told me. So I already know. I won’t bother you anymore. You can relax.”

Zhou Zhou was overwhelmed with sadness. He realised that accepting reality was so challenging and letting go of someone he liked was incredibly painful. Moreover, Zhou Zhou felt like he hadn’t really let go. He still had strong feelings for Cheng Che. But he knew he had to keep those feelings hidden, with no opportunity to express them.

“What do you mean you won’t bother me anymore?” Cheng Che asked.

“I won’t talk to you to ask for help with chemistry or ask you to hang out anymore. I won’t waste your time,” Zhou Zhou replied with a sense of frustration. He didn’t understand why Cheng Che was asking these questions, especially when he clearly knew what Zhou Zhou was talking about. Cheng Che seemed insistent on discussing everything openly, even if it meant reopening old wounds.

“So, what exactly did Yu Yang tell you?” Cheng Che asked once again.

Zhou Zhou felt like Cheng Che was trying to torture him. It was as if he needed to lay everything out in the open for his own satisfaction.

“He said you’re with another omega,” and so the conversation circled back to the topic Zhou Zhou wanted to avoid the most. He still hadn’t looked up and his voice quivered softly, “I don’t know when it happened. So I’m really sorry. If I had known earlier, I would never have bothered you.”

Zhou Zhou felt like he heard Cheng Che sigh.

He was about to ask, ‘What’s there to sigh about? I’m the one who should be sighing’ but Cheng Che reached out instead. He pulled Zhou Zhou closer and embraced him tightly. He ran his fingers through his hair while whispering, “You’re really naughty. I just came back from abroad, rushed to school right after getting off the plane, and you’re saying all this.”

The breath carried the familiar scent of minty sake. Zhou Zhou blinked his eyes in confusion. His hand hung in the air, not knowing where to place it. His heart was pounding as he stuttered, “You… Why did you go abroad?”

“My grandfather passed away,” Cheng Che closed his eyes, gently smelling the fragrance of Zhou Zhou’s hair. “I received the news shortly after leaving your house on Saturday. So I took a plane that night. I’ve been busy with the funeral these days so I couldn’t spare time to check my phone. I saw your messages on WeChat and I’m really sorry I couldn’t reply promptly. But there was so much going on. I just couldn’t find the time to talk to you properly. I wanted to come back and explain everything to you in person.”

At this point, Zhou Zhou felt that the WeChat issue wasn’t worth being concerned about. He finally hugged Cheng Che’s waist and gently patted his back, asking with care, “Are you feeling very sad?”

“My grandfather had been in poor health for a long time. So everyone was mentally prepared,” Cheng Che buried his head in Zhou Zhou’s neck. His voice was tinged with exhaustion. “I’m just feeling very tired.”

For Zhou Zhou, this was the first time he heard Cheng Che admit to feeling tired.

In his memory, Cheng Che had always been reserved, modest, and not very expressive. He usually left Zhou Zhou to make guesses about his emotions. To hear him speak so openly about feeling tired was something entirely new.

“Then you… you should rest as soon as possible,” Zhou Zhou said. “You don’t have any classes to attend. So you should go back and get some sleep.”

“I wasn’t planning to attend classes anyway,” Cheng Che’s chin rested on Zhou Zhou’s shoulder. He reached for his phone, checking the time. “My brother is urging me to go. He’s waiting for me at the school gate. I have to leave now.”

“What? So you came to school just to…”

Cheng Che released Zhou Zhou, looking into his eyes with a serious expression. “I came to see you.”

At that moment, Zhou Zhou was too stunned to even blink his eyes. Cheng Che lowered his head and gave him a kiss. “Be good. Go back to class. I’ll come find you once I’m done with everything at home.”

Zhou Zhou felt like he might be dreaming. He stared at Cheng Che for a few seconds and then buried his face in Cheng Che’s chest, taking a deep breath. “Alright.”

Cheng Che chuckled and affectionately ruffled Zhou Zhou’s hair. “What’s going on? Do you find my pheromones that appealing?”

“They’re very appealing,” Zhou Zhou replied, nuzzling his face against Cheng Che’s chest. “And, I suspect this might be a dream. So I want to stay a little longer.”

“It’s not a dream,” Cheng Che assured Zhou Zhou. He reached out to touch the back of Zhou Zhou’s neck, resisting the urge to stimulate his glands. “Pay attention in class and don’t think about other things.”

“Okay.”

Zhou Zhou released his hand and smoothed out his dishevelled hair. His face was a little red. He reached for the doorknob. But before he could touch it, Cheng Che grabbed his hand. Cheng Che’s other hand encircled Zhou Zhou’s waist, pressing him back against a desk. He lowered his head and kissed Zhou Zhou.

Zhou Zhou had never imagined he’d be making out with Cheng Che in the classroom. He let out a startled sound and, with no other place to lean on, he was pushed back and had to grab Cheng Che’s neck. He engaged in the kiss, feeling nervous and flustered. Their lips and tongues entwined. For a moment, the quiet classroom was filled only with the sound of their ambiguous kisses and their intertwined breaths.

The only thing Zhou Zhou was grateful for was that the floor where the self-study room was located had recently undergone renovations. So all the surveillance cameras had been removed from the classrooms and not yet reinstalled. Otherwise, their escapade would have been broadcast live.

Outside the self-study room, the sounds of students reading and teachers lecturing filled the air. In such a stimulating environment, Zhou Zhou became highly sensitive. He couldn’t help but release some nasal tiny moans.

Cheng Che suddenly stopped, lifting his head slightly so that their foreheads touched. They both breathed gently and Cheng Che said, “I really have to go now.”

“Yeah,” Zhou Zhou blushed and nodded. “Contact me when you have time.”

Cheng Che pinched Zhou Zhou’s cheek and kissed the tip of his nose. “Alright.”
