ARIWLBBC Chapter 2

Holographic Helmet

In the cargo hold, chaos reigned. Bo Ge calmly stared at the large bear rushing towards him, his gaze narrowed, and his long, curled eyelashes trembled gently. Huiman silently moved aside, clearing a space.

This bear was smaller than most mutated creatures on the desolate planet. Bo Ge often had to capture mutated creatures alive and attempt to communicate with them. It must be said that capturing them alive was much more challenging than killing them on the spot.

Amid the exclamations of other stowaways, the tangled ball of bears realized that their brother was missing. Looking up, they saw a huge brown bear pouncing toward the young man near the port window. The young man, draped in a black cloak, seemed frozen in place.

“Get out of the way!” The bear’s roar echoed through the cargo hold. Several bears hurriedly slid towards the out-of-control brown-yellow bear, but they were a few steps too late.

People’s hearts were about to reach their throats. Many stowaways turned their heads, as if expecting the young man to be splattered with blood in the next moment.

The giant bear, with a strong scent of soil, approached. Bo Ge held his breath, and in the moment the bear raised its paw to strike, he quickly dodged, swiftly circling behind the bear, grabbing the thick fur, flipping onto its back. The black cloak swayed with the bear’s movements, resembling a leaping black mushroom.

The agile black mushroom moved to the top of the bear’s head. Bo Ge tightly grasped the dense fur, took a deep breath, and swiftly struck the vulnerable bear’s eye with his fist.

The bear, gradually regaining consciousness, instinctively closed its eyes. Bo Ge feinted a punch, aimed for the real target, and forcefully struck the bear’s black nose.

The nose was one of the bear’s weaknesses. With this punch, the bear’s eyes went blank, the redness fading rapidly. Its massive body curled up, and a strong sense of unease and guilt surged into its heart, making it difficult to control itself and act obediently.

Like a big child who had made a mistake, the bear dared not move. It obediently lay on the ground, with its big round eyes trying to sneak a peek at the young man descending from its back.

Several bears rushing over came to a halt not far away. Glancing at the young man and then at their brother, one bear couldn’t resist approaching and sniffing the young man’s scent. Its small eyes instantly widened.

This was a human!

No wonder their brother sobered up so quickly, subdued by a punch, because this was a human!

A human!

Bo Ge looked inexplicably at the excited big bear spinning in place. The bears gathered together and spoke to each other head-to-head, with excited glances constantly directed at him, and their round buttocks with short tails wagging.

“Beastmen really like humans,” Huiman said with a serious tone, leaning against the wall.

“After the disaster on Earth, humans, along with a large number of creatures, left and wandered in the universe. Humans fed and cared for animals, and under the influence of cosmic radiation, animals began to evolve and become intelligent. Their affection for humans is engraved in their souls.”

Huiman took out a handkerchief from his pocket, covering his nose. “They learned human nature, and the love humans showed them has left an indelible shadow on their spirits, like the most comforting moments of childhood.”

“I have to admit, human domestication has been very successful,” Huiman’s voice was muffled.

Bo Ge’s eyes moved, looking up at Huiman. At that moment, he began to doubt what Huiman had taught him on the desolate planet.

If beastmen liked humans so much, why would they allow an underage human to pilot a starship and engage in combat with the insectoid race? From the recent situation, it seemed that humans were far inferior to beastmen in terms of strength and had no advantage in battle.

“Hello.” A few big bears recommended a companion with the shiniest and smoothest fur, lying in front of the young man. The huge bear head tried its best to appear cute and obedient.

“Hello.” Bo Ge’s hand was hidden under the cloak, resisting the urge to pull another handful of bear fur.

“We’re sorry. We haven’t seen humans for a very long time. My companion is very sensitive to temperature. When we entered the dust belt from the nebula just now, the sudden drop in temperature stimulated him, so he lost control.”

The brown bear, like a giant bug, slid over, and its two watery black eyes stared sincerely at the young man. “I’m sorry. Can you forgive me?”

Bo Ge stared at the big bear, couldn’t help but reach up and grab the round ears of the brown bear, smiling brightly.

“It’s okay.”

Feeling the warmth on its ears, the brown bear shivered all over, happily squinting its eyes, unconsciously turning over, revealing its relatively soft belly.

Several other big bears nearby looked envious and jealous.

“To make up for our mistake, please let us stay by your side for the next time.” The bears brought their luggage and lay around Bo Ge, glaring fiercely at the surrounding stowaways, protecting the young man in the middle.

With a row of bear buttocks facing him, Huiman frowned and stood by. Bo Ge pretended to admire the scenery, unable to resist reaching out to touch the bear fur.

The big bears seemed to enjoy the young man’s touch very much, approaching one by one, their short bear tails wagging.

Four hours passed quickly. When the big bears left the spaceship, they sent Bo Ge, wearing a protective suit, to the hovering car that came to pick him up. Reluctantly, they left, and the brown bear that had been touched even shed tears.

The protective suit covered the young man tightly, making him look like a zongzi (a traditional Chinese rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo leaves). Bo Ge couldn’t see anything until Huiman led him into a room, where he finally removed the heavy protective suit.

“This will be our living place in the future.” Huiman raised his hand, and a semi-transparent virtual panel appeared in the air. Bo Ge saw him purchasing food.

“What is this?” Bo Ge curiously stared at the virtual panel and poked at the empty space with his hand.

“Optical Brain.” Huiman displayed something similar to a wristwatch on his wrist. “There are even more advanced versions now, which can be directly implanted around the eyes without the need for external devices.”

“Can I have one?” Bo Ge raised his head eagerly, his black eyes shining.

“You need identity information to purchase an Optical Brain, but you are currently unregistered, a black market user.”

“Oh.” Bo Ge lowered his head in disappointment, his mind racing.

“You have new mail. Please check it as soon as possible.” A pleasant female voice sounded, and Huiman turned around, pressing a button at the door. The side wall opened, and a metal platform slowly protruded, carrying a meal.

“This is a specialty popular among humans on the main star of Abel.” Huiman placed the food on the table, and Bo Ge touched his stomach. Upon closer inspection, it was a bag of warm paste-like food, accompanied by a vegetable salad and a meat patty.

“Thank you, is this expensive?” Bo Ge picked up the bag, unscrewed the mouthpiece carefully, and took a sip. It was something like minced meat, a bit bland but with a fresh taste.

Although much worse than the delicacies in his memory, it was still better than the nutrient liquid he had consumed by the dozens of boxes on the desolate star. Speaking of nutrient liquid, Bo Ge felt it didn’t have much nutrition; otherwise, he wouldn’t still be so short at eighteen, having to tiptoe to reach the standard adult male height of 1.75 meters.

“Twenty credit points.” Huiman took out a small bottle from his pocket, poured the black liquid into the vegetable salad, and took out a matching detoxifying agent. “The nutrient liquid you drank before was two credit points per bag.”

Bo Ge sped up his consumption of the minced meat. In front of Huiman, he boldly ate the salad, showing no signs of discomfort.

Most mutated creatures on the desolate star were venomous. Perhaps due to frequent battles on the desolate star, Bo Ge had developed some resistance. Huiman had prepared a list of various poisons and medicines, and Bo Ge had tried most of them without ever being knocked down.

At most, he ran to the restroom a few times.

Seeing that the young man was fine, Huiman put away the detoxifying agent and glanced at the Optical Brain.

“I need to visit an old friend. It will take about four hours. You can familiarize yourself with the room first. I’ll come back in the evening and plan the next training schedule for you.”

“Okay.” Bo Ge raised his head, obediently watching Huiman leave.

Putting the meat patty he couldn’t bear to eat into a storage box, Bo Ge wandered around the room. It was quite spacious inside, with a compound layout. The lower floor had a kitchen and living room, three bedrooms, and two bathrooms. The upper floor housed Huiman’s laboratory and a gym.

Finding his own room, it was very simple, with only a bed and a set of table and chairs, similar to the layout on the desolate star.

Bo Ge looked at the empty room and felt a bit uncomfortable for some reason.

In the eighteen years, Huiman never allowed him to call him “father,” even the term “foster father” was not allowed. When Bo Ge, at the age of seven, returned victorious after defeating a mutated creature for the first time, eager to throw himself into Huiman’s arms, he remembered Huiman’s cautious avoidance.

Rather than a foster father and son, it was more like an instructor and a soldier.

The door of the room hadn’t been equipped with a recognition lock yet. Bo Ge aimlessly moved around, and in an unused room on the first floor, he suddenly discovered a box.

The box was well-hidden, in a secret cabinet at the head of the bed. Inside, Bo Ge found some snacks and noticed that they were high in sugar and fat according to the nutritional table.

This room had likely belonged to a family of three, and the room with snacks and the box clearly belonged to a child.

Bo Ge opened the box with full curiosity, revealing a white helmet inside. Bo Ge touched the helmet, and suddenly, a semi-transparent virtual panel popped up.

“Dear user, welcome to use the C101 holographic helmet. Your fingerprint has not been recorded at the Alliance Population Management Information Center. Would you like to start in guest mode?”

A holographic helmet!

Bo Ge widened his eyes, picked up the helmet from the box, and examined it inside and out.

Having experienced the demise of holographic games in his previous life, now seeing a technologically mature holographic helmet, Bo Ge felt tears welling up. It was a feeling of a child finally growing up.

Thinking that Huiman wouldn’t be back for a few more hours, Bo Ge suppressed his excitement, followed the instructions that popped up, and quickly lay down, putting on the helmet.

There was a slight tingling sensation on the top of his head, and a blue progress bar quickly reached the end. A vast and boundless expanse of starry sky unfolded before him, with colorful and brilliant nebulae, planets resembling scattered gems, silently depicting the romance of the universe.

Bo Ge watched quietly, feeling that something seemed to be surging in his chest. The empty soul, seemingly filled instantly, gave rise to a strange and familiar feeling, as if he had seen this magnificent scene countless times before.

“Welcome back. The cosmos has been updated to the latest version. Would the player like to confirm the connection?”
