TGAR Chapter 3

Past Mistakes

The two servants, when passing by the corner, took Ling Zhang in the other direction, not really to the room to rest.

They took Ling Zhang to the garden behind the main hall and threw Ling Zhang onto the ground roughly. The floor was covered with rough stones and his left arm was scratched to the point of bleeding as it hit the ground.

“Oops! Not waking up in such a bad situation. He’s really unconscious.”

” Master Ling! Master Ling!”

“Stop yelling and take off his coat.”

The two men roughly removed Ling Zhang’s coat, loosened his collar, and undid his belt. Then they took his hands and placed them on a slippery, warm object.

Ling Zhang’s fingers moved slightly, and the touch of this object reminded him of a very bad memory. The nausea was almost uncontrollable, but his anger and hatred had controlled his physical response under his strong will power.

“Alright, go back to report to our young master.”

The two men left quickly.  Although Ling Zhang closed his eyes, his hearing was extremely sharp.

After the sound of footsteps disappeared, he opened his eyes.  He quickly pulled his hand back and sat up. Then, in desperation, he rubbed his hands against the grass on the side of the road to clean it. His cold eyes swept over and landed on the woman in a coma beside him.

Her face was reddish, and her body was covered with horrible traces and impurities after sex. Her clothes were stripped to the ground and her naked body was exposed.

Ling Zhang looked and quickly averted his eyes. There was an almost suffocating anger in his heart.

The woman was Jia Yuanling’s stepmother, a young dancer. It was because she was so beautiful that Jia Yuanling’s father, Jia Yin, bought her freedom from the brothel and doted on her.

In his last life, he had visited Jia’s family after the coming of age ceremony. He had drunk a lot at the party and went out to catch his breath. But he accidentally fell asleep in the pavilion. He couldn’t remember how long he slept.  When he woke up, he returned to Jia Yuanling’s courtyard in a daze and was fed a bowl of drunken soup to kill the hangover and loss of consciousness.

Then he was awakened by a basin of cold water on his face, and this woman lying beside him.  Her screams and the curses of the people around her pierced his eardrums. It was a mess and also a nightmare to think about now.

No one believed that he was innocent, and the only woman who could testify for him had chosen silence. Then the Jia family took her away.  Later he heard that she was dead, but so what, he had become the target of ridicule and curses in Tanyang, and the dirty crime that befell him could not be dispelled.

Because of this, Ling’s family was also involved. His uncle who was about to be promoted was demoted and his grandfather was humiliated. The Ling family became the laughing stock of the entire Tanyang overnight.

Since then the Ling family has suffered a series of blows: His uncle was removed from his post shortly after his promotion was ruined; the books and paintings his grandfather had identified suddenly became fakes, bringing his fame down.

Worst of all, the Ling family was accused of colluding with bandits.

The entire Lu family was killed overnight with no survivors.  All the property had been looted. The authorities found his uncle’s pendant at the scene of the crime and declared that the Ling family colluded with bandits to kill the Lu family.

When the crisis came, his grandfather revealed his engagement to the Yuwen family from the imperial city and revealed the marriage contract.

This marriage contract intimidated everyone and gave the Ling family time to breathe.

Although Ling Zhang himself was shocked by the marriage contract, the circumstances at the time did not allow him to think much. They had to take this opportunity to find out the truth about the Lu family’s murder.

But one step ahead of them in finding out the truth was the divorce decree from the imperial city. This divorce letter became the final stone to destroy the family.

The authorities had no distractions. The Ling family was found guilty of the crime.

Dozens of his family members were tied to an open space outside the city and scorched to death in the hot sun.

He resisted but was thrown into a mass grave outside the city after they broke his legs.

To this day, Ling Zhang still remembers his uncle shouting: “Heaven is not fair!”

His uncle said that Ling’s family was brought down because they were in the way of some people.

His uncle was right. When he was thrown into the mass grave, he heard the executioner above the pit say that the Ling family’s property had been looted by other families, and his uncle’s position had been usurped by Jia Yuanling’s second uncle, Jia Zhong.

At the thought of this past memory, Ling Zhang held back all the emotions in his heart. He then got up, adjusted his clothes, and stared at the dancer, trying to look for clues to uncover the real adulterer. But there was nothing else and the place was handled very cleanly.

Ling Zhang smiled coldly and took out a jade pendant, a very precious one with “Ling” engraved on the front. He placed it in the dancer’s hand.
