“Thank you again today.”
“You too.”
It’s the fourth day since he started taking the medicine. The swelling in the magic production organ has subsided and it appears normal.
I was worried because Theo used a lot of magical power because he strengthened three things at the same time yesterday. However, although he looked pale, it did not cause his magic power to become depleted after he took the medicine. He must be able to use his magic efficiently.
My grandfather also heard about my situation yesterday from Theo, and he sided with Theo to make sure I took him with me, so there was no way I would leave Theo behind. Well, judging from yesterday’s discussion, I don’t think Theo will be able to accept me leaving him at the hospital, and if things go wrong, he’ll likely chase after me on his own.
“But Mr. Theo, don’t push yourself too hard, okay? As I said yesterday, I can fight too.”
“Ah. Today I’ll take that into consideration.”
He smiles at my nagging, so I think I’ll give up. It’s not that I don’t like working with Theo. Although I still feel sorry, I decided to ask him to work with me until he returns to the capital.
“Now that I think about it, does it seem like the ore from yesterday could be made into glasses?”
“Yeah. My father contacted them right away and the negotiations were concluded, so I kept some and sent the rest to the capital.”
“Kept some of it?”
“I mean, isn’t it strange that mana, which normally has no choice but to float in the air, has crystallized? I don’t have much knowledge about ores either, so I’m just trying to figure it out, but I think it’s worth investigating. At times like this, I wish there was an alchemist nearby that I could consult with.”
My father’s acquaintances are just my father’s acquaintances. My research on maga is being kept secret, so I feel reluctant to ask questions.
In that case, I would like to research the ore in the materials left behind by the alchemist, but it would be difficult both financially and through communication. On the other hand, if I go to the alchemist’s school library, I can read it for a fee, but it’s too far away.
It’s something that’s hard to do.
“Amelia, do you have any plans to live in the royal capital?”
“I don’t think there is any at the moment. It depends on what kind of work I want to do, but right now I want to do research, and this village, which is close to maga, is the easiest place to do it.”
Personally, I like to research things. However, if you ask me if I want to make it my full-time job, I don’t think it would make much money, so I think the best way to do research is as a hobby.
“It’s true that the area around the royal capital is purified immediately by the saints when maga appears. However, isn’t Amelia good at magic? Yesterday’s wall of flame was a very accurate decision. Even a veteran can panic. They make mistakes in judgment, and sometimes they can’t chant. That’s why I think you would be in high demand in the royal capital.”
“That’s right. Before, I thought about getting a job that involved following the saint’s purification journey, but it was just because I was appropriate for it, it wasn’t because I wanted to do it.”
“Appropriate?”
“I have many attributes. When fighting with chant magic, the more attributes you have, the better. Well, there are some spells that can only be used because they only have a single attribute, like the saints.”
Most people who aim to become magicians are people like me who have a large number of attributes. Similarly, I didn’t think about what I wanted to do, I just had a lot of attributes, so I somehow entered the field of magic.
It was after that when I realized the joy of research. Well, even when I was in the village, I was a child who asked my father and grandfather many noisy questions.
“I understand.”
“Okay. Time is limited, so let’s check the distribution of vegetation little by little today.”
First, create a vegetation distribution map to the best possible extent.
I think there are many differences depending on the distance from the maga and the altitude difference. I would like to know about plants if possible, but how far can I research it?
As for the glasses, I decided not to use them continuously for long periods of time, and only put them on when checking the mana passing through the trees, and take them off afterwards every time. It’s a pain, but if I keep wearing it while mana is pouring down on me, my eyes will go weird again and I’ll start to feel unwell.
“I’m sorry I didn’t help much.”
“Since Theo-san is checking to see if any monsters are coming, it’s easier for me to concentrate.”
Theo, who doesn’t know much about plants, took on the role of keeping an eye on the surrounding monsters while I was researching. Thanks to him, it’s easier for me too.
“That’s fine.”
“It’s a painstaking process, so isn’t just looking at it boring for Mr. Theo.”
“I guess you won’t be doing any flashy experiments like yesterday.”
It’s probably not really fun. Theo avoided making any statements and asked about the experiment. Experiments that look at attributes are certainly sparkling and fun.
“That’s right. Things like that are easy to understand and fun, but simple things like this are surprisingly more useful.”
Is it a behind-the-scenes effort?
It’s the large-scale experiments like the one I did yesterday that can get others interested, but the research I’m doing now is also necessary.
I searched all the places that seemed to be good, and tied a string of cloth together to mark the trees I had finished searching. And now it’s time to collect medicinal herbs as requested by my father.
“Mr. Theo, can I have you wear goggles and a mask again while collecting materials?”
“Ah. Thank you for the preparation.”
When I handed it over, Theo politely thanked me, put it on, and began collecting.
However, just like the other day, I show him the actual item I want him to collect and Theo collects the materials together with me. There are many fakes that look very similar, so it can be difficult to tell them apart.
“Ah. Sorry. This one looks very similar, but the vines twist to the right, so it’s a different species.”
“Oh… Collecting materials is profound.”
Although feeling depressed, Theo throws away the material he picked by mistake and picks up the material I specified again. I also collected more and more materials and achieved today’s goal.
“That’s enough for today. Also, the mountain restrictions have been lifted from today, so tomorrow my father will go with me to collect materials, so it’s okay if you don’t come with me.”
“Eh? Why don’t I go too? Is it a nuisance?”
“It’s not really a nuisance. It’s been a great help. But I’m sorry. Look. Theo and the others were attacked by a bee. He said we were going to exterminate it tomorrow. I thought you wouldn’t want to see it because it was so bad.”
Because of the restrictions, my father waited to see if anything came down to the village, but once the restrictions are lifted, outsiders also start climbing the mountain.
So it seems like he is planning to get rid of it before it attacks other people, and then get some poison as well.
“Since the treatment ends tomorrow, I would like to give my greetings to Amelia’s father if possible, is that okay?”
“Greetings? Ah. Is it about the honey and beeswax? I don’t think he is particularly concerned about it.”
My father also told me that I shouldn’t say who sold it. In my father’s case, as long as it’s not too much trouble, he’ll sell you pretty much anything at a reasonable price.
“And bees are me and Alfie’s mortal enemy. I’d rather fight than run away.”
“Mortal… well. I can kind of understand why you don’t like it when you’re constantly being defeated.”
Is it revenge for Theo?
There’s no doubt that Theo’s ability is high, so he should have been able to defeat it without any problems if he didn’t have to think about things like harvesting. It might be a good idea to overwrite the memory of being defeated before it becomes traumatic.
“I’ll ask my father, but…”
“Thank you. I’ll definitely be of help.”
“Well, my father is strong enough to be fine on his own, so there’s no need to put that much effort into it.”
“Of course, I know about the rumors about Clark the Royal Court Magician. But I think it’s going to make me nervous to do it while being watched by someone like that.”
To me, he is nothing more than a father, but to Theo, perhaps he is in a position similar to that of a magician he admires?
I’m going with my father this time too, so there’s a possibility that he’s taking advantage of it.
Is my father okay with that?
“Umm. I should check with my father first. I can’t just say it’s okay for me.”
He still keeps in touch with his juniors who adore him, so it’s not like he’s bad at looking after them, but everything related to the royal capital has become a nuisance to my father.
I have never been asked to act as an intermediary to meet my father, so I don’t know how my father will react.
I didn’t want to disappoint him, so I told Theo to keep his expectations low, but I wasn’t sure if he understood me properly.
I will try to update more often going forward.
I hope you enjoyed this chapter and thank you for reading!
