Before this, the stones thrown by Shen Zhifei were all facing upward when they landed in the palm.
The stones were irregular, so the different sensations of holding them in the palm could be easily felt, whether they were facing up or down.
The coins thrown by the Star Seer who made a living from divination didn’t need to consider mathematical probability. As long as the result did not match the expected outcome of the Star Seer, it inevitably indicated some ominous omen.
She seized the time and returned to the cave, carrying several dry pieces of firewood and coconut crabs she found within half an hour.
After returning, she did another divination. This time, the result was safety, which relieved her.
On the dry land, she ignited the firewood and then threw in the coconut crabs.
While roasting the crabs, she used the knife in her hand to work hard at splitting open the coconuts she had picked from the relatively short coconut trees.
The wind howled in the cave, bringing a somewhat terrifying atmosphere. Not far away, the seawater began to rise. Shen Zhifei looked up and saw the cave entrance gradually being submerged by the seawater.
She didn’t feel panic. Instead, she felt a sense of relief because, although she couldn’t directly consume things in the seawater, she could survive underwater. Even if this cave was completely submerged, she didn’t have to worry about her life.
Compared to this, she was more concerned about the possible dangers on the beach outside.
On that piece of land, she didn’t sense the fluctuation of extraordinary powers.
But if it’s not extraordinary power, what could pose a threat to someone with extraordinary abilities?
Wild beasts?
Or something else?
Countless speculations filled her mind, interrupted by a strange song that suddenly reached her ears.
Shen Zhifei finished eating the coconut crab in her hand, not letting a bit of the meat go to waste. Only after she equipped her tools did she jump into the water, swimming towards the entrance of the cave.
The distant singing sounded somewhat like a language used by certain tribes when she watched documentaries about Africa.
She couldn’t understand it, but it didn’t prevent her from feeling familiar.
Using the unique ability of a Star Seer to hide her traces, Shen Zhifei hid behind a rock in front of a cave and looked toward the direction of the beach.
On the beach, there appeared a group of people, naked except for aprons woven from leaves, their bodies adorned with tribal patterns painted in red pigment.
They lit one bonfire after another, illuminating the entire beach as bright as day. Then, they gathered around the largest bonfire, singing and dancing.
Shen Zhifei’s gaze didn’t linger on them but fell on two individuals who clearly didn’t seem to be locals.
They were two white people wearing camouflage jackets, a man and a woman, appearing to be in their thirties. They looked like the type of backpackers who travel everywhere.
They were bound hand and foot, tied to the bushes like pigs or sheep, their mouths covered with something unknown. In their fearful eyes, there was an expression of despair.
Shen Zhifei had excellent eyesight, even able to see the tears on their faces.
They didn’t seem to be people who, like her, drifted here from the sea but more like tourists who came on their own.
Thinking this way indicated that this place was not an uninhabited, desolate land. However, considering their situation, Shen Zhifei felt that this place with people might be even more dangerous than an empty one.
Sure enough, not long after, a strong tribal man suddenly walked to the side of the two individuals. One in each hand, like holding little chicks, he easily lifted them up.
The two struggled desperately, but their strength was no match for the muscular man. He effortlessly carried them and threw them into the midst of the crowd.
Someone brought a wooden basin, and another person brought a flagpole. After inserting the flagpole in the middle of the crowd, the man suddenly grabbed the feet of the two white people and hung them upside down on the flagpole.
The person with the wooden basin cleverly placed it under the flagpole.
Shen Zhifei bit her lip tightly, and she suddenly guessed what might happen next.
Indeed, the man produced a bone-made dagger from somewhere and ruthlessly thrust it towards the neck of one of the white people.
Violent blood sprayed instantly, reaching a height of over a meter, covering the man’s face entirely.
He wiped the blood on his face and shouted. Shen Zhifei couldn’t understand the words, but she could sense his excitement.
The woman had already been frightened to the point of collapse, continuously shaking her head, and urine flowed down her body from top to bottom.
Just as it was about to drip into the basin filled with blood, the man growled displeasedly at her. He lifted her off the flagpole and threw her to a few women guarding nearby.
They untied her ropes, but before she could resist, they quickly stripped off her clothes.
She attempted to attack the women holding her and escape from this place, but each of them was strong and sturdy, like sumo wrestlers from a certain country, easily restraining her by grabbing her arms.
The women took her to the seaside, throwing her into the water as if rinsing meat. They washed her roughly several times, completely ignoring whether she choked on water or not.
Feeling they had cleaned her, they lifted her back to the flagpole, respectfully presenting her to the man.
What followed was a repetition of the scene Shen Zhifei had just witnessed.
She had seen death before, but when had she witnessed a scene where killing was as casual as slaughtering a pig?
White flesh hung casually on the flagpole, resembling pork displayed on a butcher’s stand in a market.
Shen Zhifei submerged herself in the water, returned to the cave, and surfaced holding a rock, retching for quite a while before recovering.
If she hadn’t suppressed her stomach and prevented herself from vomiting, her dinner tonight would have been in vain.
After relieving the discomfort, she dove back into the water, ready to take another look.
As she approached the cave entrance, a pair of hands suddenly wrapped around her waist.
Startled, Shen Zhifei almost choked on water, and Zhao Xiaokui’s hands quickly covered her mouth.
She looked at Zhao Xiaokui in surprise, and Zhao Xiaokui smiled at her, gesturing for both of them to go out and see what was happening.
With her long fishtail, Zhao Xiaokui swam much quieter than Shen Zhifei, like a real fish silently appearing on the water’s surface.
The two white people, who had been bled, were no longer struggling. The man who killed them carried the wooden basin and followed an old man, drawing mysterious patterns on the ground.
At the same time, they spoke in a strange language, sounding extremely unsettling.
After completing the pattern with blood, the old man had the strong man lie in the center of the pattern. He led the people, forming a circle, kneeling towards the man, and loudly shouting.
The blood that should have seeped into the sand after being sprinkled on the beach mysteriously began to glow from the direction of the depicted pattern. It spread from the outside to the inside, reaching the body of the man lying in the center of the pattern.
The old man and the tribe members, upon witnessing this scene, became more excited, as if they were about to witness the descent of a god.
Their shouts grew louder and stronger, one after another, incessant and overlapping. In the end, the entire sky and earth seemed to be echoing with their voices.
The man lying in the blood suddenly convulsed violently, his face showing a painful expression. A woman who seemed to be his relative tried to intervene when she saw this but was pulled away. She said something, looking worried as she gazed at the man, but quickly joined the others in shouting loudly.
With each successive cheer, the man’s convulsions went from weak to strong, then gradually disappeared.
The blood on the ground began to fade. Under the old man’s direction, several men with tied arms were pushed forward.
They were pressed to kneel in front of the pattern. A tall man, holding an axe made of stone, chopped off their heads one by one.
As a continuous stream of fresh blood poured in, the man lying in the center suddenly floated up.
He slowly straightened his body, arms naturally opening. His aura gradually rose, and suddenly, he opened his eyes. The black eyes flickered with a cold light, resembling the gaze of a wild beast.
He shouted loudly.
Others followed suit, cheering as if they were fanatical devotees.
Zhao Xiaokui held Shen Zhifei’s waist and silently retreated into the cave.
Just thinking about the scene that had just occurred made Shen Zhifei’s body uncontrollably shiver, her teeth trembling as she asked, “Are they cannibals?”
“I don’t think so,” Zhao Xiaokui patted her hand, comforting her, recalling the recent events. “They are summoning an evil god.”
Shen Zhifei asked, “Did they succeed?”
“I’m afraid it’s not just them who succeeded,” Zhao Xiaokui replied.
As she looked around, the entire continent, including the sea, was enveloped in a heavy, gloomy atmosphere.
“I woke up suddenly because I sensed the presence of the evil god. This place is very dangerous; we need to be careful. As soon as the people outside leave, I’ll take you away from here.”
Zhao Xiaokui gently touched Shen Zhifei’s face, reassuring her.
“How is your body now?”
“I’m fine, don’t worry, no problem,” Zhao Xiaokui, enduring the pain in her body, said, “It’s you who is still weak after I took so much blood from you earlier and soaked in the water for so long.”
Shen Zhifei hugged Zhao Xiaokui tightly. “You scared me.”
Zhao Xiaokui embraced her back. “Don’t be afraid; I’m here, right?”
In the cold cave, they held each other tightly. Zhao Xiaokui’s body temperature was very low, giving Shen Zhifei a chilling sensation, yet she felt an unprecedented sense of security.
It was as if, with this person here, she had nothing to fear.
Zhao Xiaokui gently stroked her back, constantly soothing her frightened emotions while contemplating the fleeting images that had just passed through her mind.
Leaving might not be as easy as they imagined.
The external singing gradually ceased. Holding Shen Zhifei, they once again passed through the cave entrance, retreating behind the rocks.
The fires on the shore had already been extinguished, and whether it was the tribe or the evil god, it seemed like everyone had vanished without a trace.
In Zhao Xiaokui’s perception, there was indeed no one on the surface.
She said to Shen Zhifei, “Zhifei, let’s do a divination.”
Shen Zhifei’s result was safe.
Without hesitation, Zhao Xiaokui wrapped her arms around her girlfriend’s waist and swiftly escaped from the coastline.
In the instant she rushed out, numerous black tentacles suddenly surged from the point where the sea met the land.
They were like invisible, unknown shadows, closely following behind Zhao Xiaokui.
