“Don’t rush,” Cheng Ye stopped them. “Since we’re trying to lure the snake out of its hole, we need to wait until it shows its head. We’ve waited this long, a few more days won’t hurt.”

The entire night passed peacefully. The reflected white light flashed a few times and then disappeared without a trace. The next day, on their way back, Fang Yuan couldn’t help but complain.

“That guy, Feng Daqiang, is really diligent. Every night, he patrols on the dot. The first few times, he almost scared me to death. I thought the culprit had come out.”

Chen Xiaonuan chuckled, “He’s very diligent. I’ve been chatting with him every time I go in and out of the community these past few days. He even asked why my boyfriend isn’t picking me up. He mentioned that there were murders in this community before, where two people had their throats slit. The deaths were gruesome.”

Suddenly, both Cheng Ye and Pei Qinghuai turned their gazes to Chen Xiaonuan.

Chen Xiaonuan paused mid-sentence, blinked a few times, and said, “The deaths were gruesome?”

“The sentence before that,” they said.

“The throats were slit?” Chen Xiaonuan asked, confused.

Cheng Ye and Pei Qinghuai exchanged a glance, a slight smile forming on their faces. “How does he know the victims had their throats slit?”

At this moment, Chen Xiaonuan and Fang Yuan finally realized. The bodies were never publicly visible from the discovery to the transport process, and the cause of death was known only to the police. So how did Feng Daqiang know? Unless he was the perpetrator.

Pei Qinghuai chuckled, “Looks like the snake has shown its tail.”

Back at the station, Yan Ya was sitting on a bench, staring at the ceiling with a look of despair. Seeing Cheng Ye return, she trembled and said, “Team Leader Cheng, I’ve gained a new understanding of the forensic profession.”

“You need to have a psychological defense as thick as an iron plate.”

Fang Yuan placed a hand on Cheng Ye’s shoulder, covering his stomach with the other, “Team Leader Cheng, it’s one thing not knowing who the culprit is, but now that we know, I feel a bit nauseous too.”

Fang Yuan gagged a few times, “I need to step out for a bit.”

Cheng Ye stood there, stunned for a moment, before saying, “I’ll go to my office.”

Pei Qinghuai raised an eyebrow, “You might not know this, but he was the one who discovered those letters, and the last one, he personally picked up from the trash and opened.”

Pei Qinghuai pursed his lips, holding back a laugh, and whispered, “Barehanded.”

Yan Ya’s mouth twitched. Although there were evidence bags and gloves when handling these items, the physiological disgust was unavoidable. She put on a serious expression and gave a thumbs-up in the direction of Cheng Ye’s office.
