HH Chapter 86

Prisoner's Dilemma

“Alright.” Fang Yuan shrugged, surprised. “I was too hasty.”

“By the way, Fang Yuan,” Cheng Ye called out, “Did you find anything at the crime scene?”

Fang Yuan’s face showed a trace of melancholy. He sighed and said, “No, but we did find a few dummy surveillance cameras. We’ve reported this issue many times, but no one has come to fix it.”

Cheng Ye adjusted his clothes and said, “Erbao, give me a copy of Sun Xiaoyu’s home address. I’ll go check it out.”

Zhang Yibao looked up, “Okay.”

“I’ll go too, Captain Cheng,” Chen Xiaonuan said as she stood up.

When they arrived at Sun Xiaoyu’s rental apartment, a faint, fishy odor wafted out from inside. It was barely noticeable unless one sniffed carefully. They lowered their hands, which were about to knock on the door, and called for Yan Ya and the others.

After preparing, Yan Ya unlocked the door with a click. She gripped her toolbox and stepped inside. Several large bags of trash were piled at the entrance, emitting a strong stench. Yan Ya crouched down, took a quick look to make sure there were no immediate hazards, and then moved deeper into the apartment. The furnishings were simple, and the constant buzzing of flies could be heard. Yan Ya’s nose twitched as she detected a peculiar rotten smell. She followed the scent and finally stopped at the kitchen door.

Taking a deep breath, she mentally braced herself for the worst. However, when she opened the door, she was momentarily stunned. Cheng Ye, thinking something was wrong, quickly asked, “What’s the matter?”

Yan Ya snapped back to reality, “Nothing, nothing. Just two rotten chickens.”

“Chickens?” Cheng Ye turned to see the chickens in a metal basin. They were covered in mold that had turned gray-green and had shriveled up. He took a quick glance and then backed out.

Naturally, the kitchen was left for Yan Ya to handle. Cheng Ye frowned as he searched for useful clues. Sun Xiaoyu’s room was messy, with an unmade bed and an unfinished bag of chips on the nightstand.

“She left home suddenly,” came Pei Qinghuai’s voice from behind. Cheng Ye acknowledged with a grunt and opened the nightstand drawer. Aside from a few charging cables, there were only some disposable chopsticks. After rummaging through it, he found nothing more.

The vanity table was filled with the latest seasonal products. Chen Xiaonuan muttered, “But based on Sun Xiaoyu’s financial situation, she shouldn’t be able to afford this much.”

“Keep looking. See if there’s anything else,” Cheng Ye said as he squatted down, feeling an inexplicable urge to look under the table. He found nothing and ended up bumping his head, leaving a large lump.

Chen Xiaonuan couldn’t help but laugh. She turned her head to keep examining the cosmetics on the table. Within two or three minutes, she noticed something odd.

She arranged several lipsticks on the table and called Cheng Ye and Pei Qinghuai over. “Only two or three of these lipsticks have been used. The rest are either untouched or not even opened.”

As she spoke, Chen Xiaonuan seemed to think of something. She tilted her head and opened a small drawer on the side of the vanity. It was stuffed with receipts, some of which spilled out. She crouched down and picked up a few fallen receipts.
