Thus, under Lin Jian’s trepidation, the two of them followed the horde of zombies forward.
The attraction was so strong that zombies on higher floors desperately crashed into windows. If the windows weren’t closed or were shattered, they jumped out one by one. Those on lower floors fell, breaking bones but still crawling forward. Those from higher floors fell and were completely broken, a gruesome sight, only able to wriggle and struggle on the ground.
Lin Jian couldn’t bear to look. As a general surgeon with over ten years of experience, he’d seen all kinds of bloody scenes, but he still found it hard to face this one calmly and didn’t want to look.
Xiao Muyu glanced at him, “Are you familiar with this area?”
Lin Jian nodded, “I’m a native of G City. I’m very familiar with this area.”
“Then lead the way. Follow the zombie horde but avoid streets with windows.”
The street zombies were drawn away, posing no danger, but they had to guard against the falling zombies.
“Got it, or we’d be delivering takeout,” Lin Jian joked, a humor essential for a surgeon, even in dire situations.
Xiao Muyu added calmly, “Not delivering takeout. We are the takeout.”
Lin Jian was stunned, sneaking a glance at the calm and elegant woman beside him. He was surprised that such a seemingly delicate woman remained calmer than him, a doctor, in the face of such a terrifying situation.
But thinking further, Lin Jian pessimistically realized that among the seven who escaped, except for the woman who lost her husband, the others were calmer and colder than him. It made him question the world—what kind of people were these?
However, these thoughts didn’t last long. Survival was the priority; he needed to live to see his family. Thinking of his parents, wife, and daughter almost brought him to tears.
The phone signal was lost, and his attempts to contact them had failed.
He hoped this disaster wasn’t nationwide, so his family on a trip might avoid this hell.
Xiao Muyu asked him to lead, and he didn’t disappoint, choosing paths with few people. Though there were buildings, they were back walls, making it impossible for any zombies inside to harm them.
But his role soon diminished as, after two small streets, Xiao Muyu saw the zombies’ destination.
Lin Jian shivered and whispered, “Oh my God,” his voice trembling.
No wonder he reacted this way. The scene made Xiao Muyu’s scalp tingle too.
A hundred meters away on the main street stood two adjacent commercial towers, about thirty to forty stories high. The left one was surrounded by layers of zombies.
The number of zombies was incalculable, with more stumbling towards the building.
The door, likely an infrared sensor door, didn’t open. Whatever attracted the zombies seemed to be inside, so they relentlessly pounded on the door.
The transparent glass door was covered in blood, a horrifying sight.
The prolonged pounding was taking its toll on the high-quality door; it wouldn’t hold much longer.
Xiao Muyu frowned, looking at the building. Sadly, there was no sign of life, making her feel both disappointed and relieved.
She wasn’t ready to leave. If it wasn’t the first extreme scenario she suspected, then following the zombies had more significance. Zombies gathering wasn’t coincidental in the apocalypse; it could be a significant discovery.
Suddenly, the horde attacking the building showed a disturbance. Xiao Muyu noticed a couple of zombies moving differently, more agile. Failing to enter the building, they stepped on other zombies’ heads and started climbing.
These zombies quickly stood out, climbing the building. Although stronger than other zombies, it was still difficult to climb the tower, resulting in many falling with dull thuds.
The scene was both terrifying and comical, leaving one confused. But Xiao Muyu’s expression soon turned serious, her eyes anxious.
Lin Jian suspected that if not for the dangerous situation, Xiao Muyu would have rushed in.
Her anxiety was triggered by the door suddenly opening—not broken by zombies but smoothly opening as if someone intentionally let them in.
For the first time, Lin Jian saw clear anxiety in Xiao Muyu’s eyes, surprising him.
Facing the zombie horde, she hadn’t been this tense. What had she discovered to cause such a change?
Meanwhile, some zombies showed exceptional physical prowess, climbing with ease. As the lower zombies flooded into the building, these few climbed to the sixth floor using air conditioners and window ledges.
Zombies don’t tire. As long as they don’t fall, they keep climbing, making their route clear to Xiao Muyu. Whatever attracted them was on the tenth floor. She saw a zombie reach a half-open window on the tenth floor but couldn’t enter.
A figure appeared at the window, a tiny speck to Xiao Muyu. Whatever it did, the zombie fell like a bird with broken wings, crashing down from the tenth floor, crushing two zombies below, and then struggling to rise again.
One after another, selected zombies fell, decisively and mercilessly.
Even without seeing the person’s expression or actions, Xiao Muyu knew they were resolute and steady, and she knew who it was.
An intuition told Xiao Muyu that the person she was looking for was there. However, seeing the horde of zombies inside the building, with their nightmarish howls and pounding footsteps, she felt her hands and feet go numb with tension.
Fear and anger surged within her, the same feeling she had experienced during the “Death Class 7” incident resurfacing in her heart.
Xiao Muyu’s eyes blazed with fury. That bastard summoned so many zombies. Did she ever consider how she would escape if something went wrong?
Xiao Muyu looked down at the card she held. She tried using the “Happy Family” card, but it still couldn’t connect. She realized it wasn’t that the card couldn’t be used, but that certain cards were unusable in this situation.
The zombies outside the building numbered at least several hundred, swarming in like locusts, making it impossible for Xiao Muyu to get close.
Looking up at the twin towers, Xiao Muyu turned to Lin Jian and said, “Stay here. I need to go in.”
Lin Jian’s eyes widened. “What? Miss Xiao, that’s the Wanjing International Building. Every floor is an office space, packed with employees. Although some were drawn to the adjacent building, you can hear there are still many inside. If you get trapped and are unfamiliar with the layout, it will be dangerous.”
“I know, but I have to go. If I don’t come back, you leave on your own.”
With that, Xiao Muyu crouched and ran towards the adjacent building. Lin Jian had no time to stop her.
The door here was already broken, and the lobby was a mess, but there wasn’t a single zombie.
To save time, Xiao Muyu took a risk and pressed the elevator button. With a ding, a burly male zombie stumbled out, its head tilted and mouth agape, but it didn’t even look at Xiao Muyu.
Enduring the nauseating stench, Xiao Muyu decisively pressed the top floor button. Among the overwhelming smells, she caught a faint whiff of bitter almonds, strangely familiar.
Recalling the bitter almond taste in her mouth when she regained consciousness, she felt even more disgusted.
Without dwelling on it, she smoothly reached the top floor.
Half of the top floor was office space, the other half a large flat area, close to the adjacent building. Rows of central air conditioning units were neatly arranged on the rooftop, unused in this season.
Xiao Muyu moved unimpeded, crossing the air conditioning units, and leaned over the railing to look down. From this height, she could see more clearly. She spotted Shen Qingqiu still there.
The two buildings weren’t far apart, but Xiao Muyu didn’t dare bet on Shen Qingqiu jumping over without any protection.
However, she soon noticed a small platform halfway up the building, possibly for air conditioning units.
She turned back and went down, unsure of the exact floor, checking three times before finding it.
Along the way, she encountered three zombies trapped inside, dealt with them, and discovered it was the ninth floor.
Surveying the office on the ninth floor, she yanked down the blue folding curtains and ran to the platform, waving them at the edge. Shouting, “Shen Qingqiu! Shen Qingqiu!”
After several calls, Shen Qingqiu finally saw the small waving blue fabric. Her eyes lit up, and she opened the window, tearing down her curtain and waving it too.
Seeing Xiao Muyu, Shen Qingqiu was delighted, but her window faced south while Xiao Muyu’s platform faced east, allowing her to see only Xiao Muyu’s head poking out. She dropped the curtain and disappeared.
Xiao Muyu’s heart tightened. As soon as Shen Qingqiu left, the first wave of zombies broke into the room where she had been, wreaking havoc.
The zombies seemed to discover something, all rushing out. Xiao Muyu broke into a cold sweat, wishing she could fly over, but she could only watch helplessly.
Xiao Muyu kept her head up, scanning the other building for any movement, trusting Shen Qingqiu understood her intent.
She focused solely on the sounds and movements from the opposite building, blocking out everything else.
Holding her breath to not miss a single detail, Xiao Muyu’s hands clenched together. Though the weather was cool for June, sweat beaded on her forehead.
A distant crash from the opposite building caught Xiao Muyu’s attention. She looked up just as she heard a sharp crack, like something breaking, followed by another crash. A figure leaped out of the tenth-floor window towards her.
The sun hung in the sky, casting a shadow over Xiao Muyu, making Shen Qingqiu’s form even clearer.
Backlit, with a long strap tied around her waist, Shen Qingqiu looked like a falling kite, dazzling and alarming.
Three zombies tumbled out behind her, failing to stop and falling. Xiao Muyu’s heart pounded as she rushed to catch her.
Jumping from the tenth floor of the opposite building to the ninth floor of this one, a three-meter vertical drop and a five-meter horizontal gap, Xiao Muyu envisioned many possible outcomes, most of them bad, but she remained resolute.
Shen Qingqiu’s explosive power and excellent physical condition allowed her to cover the vertical distance in under 0.25 seconds. She was less than twenty centimeters from the platform edge, but this gap was critical.
If it were anyone else, Shen Qingqiu would either fall or be knocked unconscious by the impact. But Xiao Muyu, in a split second, jumped onto an air conditioner unit, hooking her left hand onto the railing and grabbing Shen Qingqiu’s extended left hand with her right, pulling her in.
The force of a person falling from three meters was immense, and Xiao Muyu’s left hand slipped. But this force was enough for Shen Qingqiu to grasp the railing with her right hand.
Shen Qingqiu locked her legs around Xiao Muyu, clinging to her like a vine, fearing she would fall.
Xiao Muyu glanced down, her eyes flashing. Rehooking her left hand on the ninth-floor edge, the two simultaneously climbed up.
The scene was incredibly dangerous, a single misstep would mean total failure, but the impossible happened.
Shen Qingqiu held Xiao Muyu tightly. Before Xiao Muyu could react, she sidestepped, eyes cold, and stabbed a zombie on the platform in the spine with a dagger, killing it instantly.
“I finally found you. Let me hug you,” Xiao Muyu tried to look around but was held too tightly, only catching a glimpse of the wide-eyed, lifeless zombie.
Author’s Note: I’m exhausted today, drove back home, and I’m very sleepy. I’ll fix errors tomorrow. Everyone’s guesses were correct but not entirely. Someone mentioned attracting zombies. Do you remember why Xiao Shen can attract zombies and what she does with it?
