“I’ve noticed that during weddings, the groom’s brothers cheer for him when welcoming the bride1T/N: He’s talking about the ‘Best Man’ of the groom or simply the groomsman.. Would elder brothers be willing to lend this little help to younger brother?” Chen Wang said with a smile. “Father Emperor often says that brothers should be mature, steady and value camaraderie. Surely elder brothers wouldn’t refuse, right?”
The three princes: “……”
Is it not enough that you shamelessly run to the Ming family to fetch the bride yourself? Now you even want us to accompany you? Do you not know that there should be a limit to how thick-skinned one can be?
“Fetching the bride is all about the enjoyment; please tie these red belts around your waists.” Chen Wang said, handing a belt to each of his brothers. “Elder brothers, the auspicious time is approaching. We should set off immediately, shouldn’t we?”
The three princes stood there, staring blankly at the ugly red belts.
Did he even give them an opportunity to decline?
“Eldest brother…” An Wang turned to Huai Wang, hoping he would valiantly reject Yun Duqing’s shameless request.
Huai Wang avoided the hopeful gazes of his two younger brothers and tied the red belt around his waist. “As elder brothers, it is only right that we help our younger brother fetch the bride. After all, the more, the merrier.”
An Wang and Jing Wang silently withdrew their gazes and helplessly tied the red belts around their waists.
Who said that an elder brother was like a father?
Eldest brother’s brotherly love for them could only be described as a slump down a mountain.
Seeing that Chen Wang not only came himself but also brought along three other princes, an official from the Ministry of Rites turned to his colleague and asked, “Do the three princes owe His Highness a lot of money?”
“Cough.” The colleague coughed dryly. “At least he’s our person.”
Chen Wang was one of the people of their Ministry of Rites. Chen Wangfei was the daughter of one of the officials of their ministry, so she was also considered one of their own. Could it really be called bullying when one of their own people bullied the other princes?
“Your Highnesses truly share a deep brotherly bond. Xiaguan and the others feel so moved,” the official loudly lauded the brotherhood of the four. The dark faces of the other three princes didn’t affect their speed of praising.
Phrases like ‘brotherly love and respect’, ‘blood is thicker than water’ and ‘unity among brothers’ flowed out effortlessly, showcasing their eloquence and grace.
For a moment, the three princes couldn’t maintain their expressions any longer2T/N: My jaw hurts from laughing. These officials are too biased ahahaha. Poor princes..
“The auspicious time has arrived; lift the bridal sedan chair!”
Chen Wang, sitting on the horse with the red embroidered ball, looked up at the red paper and flowers fluttering down from the Palace walls. He gripped the reins tightly.
He was about to go and bring his Wangfei back.
At the Ming family residence, Jiuzhu was surrounded by eight senior mingfu-s and ten women of good fortune3T/N: These are women who are blessed with good fortunes: their parents are still alive and they are happily married with many children.. The courtyard was guarded by the Dragon Guards. She held a fan in her right hand while cradling a jade ruyi4T/N: It is a symbol of power and good fortune. in her left, trying not to move her head too much.
The dragon and phoenix bridal head ornament was indeed beautiful, but it was also incredibly heavy.
Suddenly, the sound of firecrackers erupted outside, followed by a lot of chatter. As the din grew closer, the eight senior mingfu-s began to sense something off.
In imperial weddings, wasn’t it customary for the bride’s family to send her to the bridal sedan chair and then directly into the Palace?
Why was it so noisy outside?
Just then, they heard someone outside reciting an ‘urging makeup’ poem5T/N: Burnt quite some of my few existing braincells but still couldn’t come up with a better translation for this one. So this (催妆诗 / cuī zhuāng shī) is a kind poem which is recited during a wedding ceremony to urge the bride to adorn herself or get ready for the wedding. If anyone comes up with a better name, do comment. I’ll use it ;’), and the voice sounded… like Chen Wang’s?
Chen Wang personally came to welcome the bride?
The eight senior mingfu-s exchanged incredulous glances. One of them stealthily opened a crack in the door to peek outside merely to discover that not only had Chen Wang arrived, but Huai Wang, An Wang and Jing Wang were accompanying him as groomsmen.
She gasped in surprise, turned to the other women inside, straightened her posture and announced, “The groom has finished reciting the poem; please have the bride bid farewell to her parents and proceed towards the bridal sedan chair.”
The highest-ranking mingfu used a brush between Jiuzhu’s brows, “Swallows perch in pairs; Poetry celebrates a good match6T/N: Swallows are birds that live together, symbolizing a harmonious and faithful relationship between the bride and groom. They are often used as symbols of loyalty and partnership, as they are known to mate for life. The second part, ‘poetry celebrates a good match’ suggests that the union is celebrated and admired, as poetry often reflects cultural values and ideals. In weddings, such phrases are used to express wishes for a happy, loving and prosperous life together. It reflects the traditional Chinese belief in the importance of balance, harmony and the idea that a good marriage is a union of two souls which complement each other..”
“Xianzhu, please use the tuanshan fan to cover your face so that others do not see your brilliance.”
The door swung wide open and the mingfu-s and women of good fortune moved aside together. One of the women was about to support Jiuzhu, who was holding the jade ruyi.
“Ben Wang will do it,” Chen Wang declared as he walked up to Jiuzhu. He took her hand and whispered in her ear, “I’ll accompany you to bid farewell to Father-in-law and Mother-in-law.”
“Your Highness, that does not…”
Does not conform to the rules.
The mingfu swallowed the rest of her words under Chen Wang’s fierce gaze.
In the main hall, Ming Jingzhou and Shen Ying7T/N: Shen-shi’s full name. It (盈 / yíng) means full / surplus. were seated in splendid attire. Hearing the sound of firecrackers, tears that filled her eyes threatened to spill over.
However, when she saw Chen Wang coming with her daughter and the three princes behind the eight matrons, the tears in her eyes stilled.
What is Chen Wang doing here?
“This unfilial daughter bids farewell to Father and Mother.” Jiuzhu said as she handed the jade ruyi to the matron closest to her. Holding the fan with both hands, she knelt before her parents.
“Kowtow!”
The moment when Jiuzhu bowed her head to kowtow, Chen Wang bent down to perform a deep bow as well.
A monarch cannot kneel before a subject, but as a junior, it was not improper to bow his head and clasp his hands together before elders.
All the members of the Ming family present looked at Chen Wang, who was bowing deeply, with a thoughtful expression.
Ming Cunfu wanted to step forward and help Chen Wang up, but Ming Jinghai reached out to stop him.
“Kowtow again.”
Another kowtow.
After the third kowtow, Shen Ying reached out to help her daughter up, while Ming Jingzhou supported Chen Wang up by his arm.
With his actions, His Highness Chen Wang proved the sincerity of the imperial family’s intentions in marrying a Wangfei.
