ASPDDW Chapter 44

An Unexpected Appearance

But it didn’t work out as expected.

Wen Xia had overestimated the effect of lavender essential oil and underestimated his own stubborn issue with unfamiliar beds. It hit him with full force, leaving him sleepless and, to his dismay, even sleepwalking again. Fortunately, he didn’t wander out of the room, but when he woke up, he found himself lying on the cold, hard couch without a blanket, his hands and feet icy cold.

He had been awakened by the chill.

When Guiqulai saw him with dark circles under his eyes, he was startled. “What happened to you last night? Didn’t you go to sleep right after logging off?”

Wen Xia shot him a weary look. “I have trouble sleeping in unfamiliar places.”

Guiqulai chuckled, realizing what was going on. “You really are born with a young master’s temperament, huh?”

The two of them headed to the hotel lobby, where about ten others had already gathered. Wen Xia had been with Qunjing for two years and knew several of the gaming streamers. The single-player game streamers were particularly familiar with him, especially those who were loyal fans of Starry Night Studio’s games, always being the first to stream new releases, including the recent demo of The Flower at the End of the Road.

When Wen Xia first appeared, no one recognized him. But seeing him with Guiqulai, the quicker ones soon pieced it together. “You’re… Deng Xia?”

Wen Xia nodded. “That’s me.”

“Holy crap, Xia Boss?”

A few people quickly gathered around him, and Wen Xia had to muster up his energy to chat with them. Finally, when everyone had arrived, Nana, the lead for the promotional shoot, led them to the makeup studio they had pre-arranged. During the process, she reminded everyone to review the shooting script she had sent in the group chat.

With twenty people, the makeup process was slow. Wen Xia was the fifth in line. After his turn, he changed into his costume and waited.

Makeup was done by 8:30 AM, and they moved on to the first filming location.

The promotional video was scheduled to be shot at three different locations, and they spent the entire morning at the first one without finishing.

Although many of the streamers had experience with live streaming, facing a camera for a professional shoot was a completely different challenge. They weren’t celebrities and had no experience with this kind of work, making them feel stiff and awkward. As a result, the footage was far from what the director had envisioned, leading to multiple retakes.

The director in charge of the shoot was visibly exhausted by the end of it.

By noon, they had barely completed half of what was planned for the first location.

Nana arranged lunch for everyone, and they took a break on-site. Although the weather in Ancheng was chilly, the bright sunshine made it bearable to stand outside.

Wen Xia’s costume was quite thin and didn’t provide much warmth. He rubbed his nose and pulled his coat tighter around him.

Even though the makeup had covered up most of his pale complexion, the fatigue in his eyes was hard to hide. Noticing his sluggish demeanor, Guiqulai sat down beside him. “Are you feeling alright?”

“Not really,” Wen Xia said, rubbing his nose again, his voice sounding a bit muffled. “I keep wanting to sneeze.”

“You’re not catching a cold, are you? Your voice doesn’t sound as clear as it did this morning.”

Wen Xia placed the back of his hand against his forehead but didn’t feel much of a difference.

“Let me check,” Guiqulai said, placing his hand on Wen Xia’s forehead and then comparing it to his own. He frowned. “It does seem a bit warmer… Hang on, I’ll get someone else to check.”

He stood up and walked away. With his view now unobstructed, Wen Xia glanced around. Suddenly, a shiver ran down his spine as he processed what he had just seen. He turned back, startled.

There, near the greenery, stood a familiar figure.

The man was dressed in a well-tailored, high-quality business suit, his posture as straight as a pine tree. He stood quietly under the tree, his face obscured by dappled sunlight, making his expression unreadable.

Wen Xia’s chilled brain struggled to comprehend what was happening. He watched in a daze as the man approached—not toward him, but toward Nana. Nana noticed him, showing only a brief moment of surprise before she walked over to greet him.

Wen Xia was too far away to hear their conversation, but he could clearly see Lin Fengqi. The words “Holy crap” slowly rolled through his mind.

He had prepared himself for the possibility that Lin Fengqi might find out, even relishing the thought of seeing his shocked expression when he did. But not like this, with Lin Fengqi showing up to surprise him. This was all wrong.

Why was Lin Fengqi here? To oversee the shoot?

Doesn’t a big CEO like him have better things to do?

Wen Xia stared in disbelief as Lin Fengqi finished talking with Nana and started walking toward him. He immediately stood up, driven by an inexplicable urge to flee.

He had barely taken two steps when Guiqulai called out, “Lao Xia! Where are you going?”

“Bathroom,” Wen Xia replied without turning back.

He didn’t stop until he was far enough from the group. Just as he thought he had escaped, he heard someone call his name from behind. “Wen Xia.”

Recognizing the familiar voice, he closed his eyes and came to a halt.

When he turned around, Lin Fengqi had stopped two meters away.

“…”

After a few seconds of silence, Wen Xia suddenly calmed down. “…What do you want?”

Lin Fengqi hesitated for a moment, then cautiously took two steps forward. Seeing no adverse reaction from Wen Xia, he walked the remaining distance. “Are you… not feeling well?”

Wen Xia was taken aback. Of all the things Lin Fengqi could have said in this unexpected encounter, his first concern was whether he was feeling alright.

He studied Lin Fengqi’s expression, finding no trace of surprise or shock. It was as if the man had known all along that he would be here.

Wen Xia hadn’t been certain if the list of streamers Qunjing submitted to Fenghang included their real names. But from the time Nana mentioned submitting the list to the moment they arrived in Ancheng, Lin Fengqi hadn’t brought it up or subtly inquired about his streaming activities. Wen Xia had naturally assumed Lin Fengqi was in the dark.

After all, a CEO has plenty on his plate. Surely, he doesn’t micromanage every little detail. Isn’t that what subordinates are for?

But now… it seemed like Lin Fengqi was indeed involved in the details.

He must have known all along but chose not to ask or say anything. And now, out of the blue, he shows up to give him a scare?

Wen Xia didn’t respond. Lin Fengqi lowered his voice, asking again, “Are you really feeling that unwell?”

As he spoke, he raised his hand, intending to check Wen Xia’s forehead, but Wen Xia lifted his own hand to block him, countering with, “Why are you here?”

“I…”

“On a business trip?”

“…Yes.”

“Weren’t you supposed to be in Z City?” Wen Xia asked. “Did you lie to me?”

“I didn’t,” Lin Fengqi’s cool facade cracked, revealing a hint of panic. “I did go to Z City. I rushed here from there.”

“What for? Is this your second stop on your business trip? Did you need to personally oversee the shoot?”

“No…” His voice grew weaker.

“Then why are you here?”

“…”

Lin Fengqi averted his gaze for a moment before returning it to Wen Xia, his ears turning red as he met Wen Xia’s unflinching stare. In a low voice, he said, “I came… to see you.”

Wen Xia’s heart skipped a beat.

His annoyance dissipated. So Lin Fengqi really did know all along. It seemed that the list submitted by Nana must have included their real names. As for why Lin Fengqi didn’t ask, perhaps he was worried that bringing it up would embarrass Wen Xia. From what Wen Xia had come to understand about Lin Fengqi, that seemed like a plausible explanation. He had managed to rationalize and convince himself in no time.

Seeing Wen Xia’s anger subside, Lin Fengqi hesitated for a moment before cautiously raising his hand again, this time gently pressing the back of it against Wen Xia’s forehead.

Wen Xia didn’t resist.

Lin Fengqi then tested his own forehead’s temperature, his brows furrowing in concern.

“You have a slight fever,” he noted.

Wen Xia finally let out the sneeze he’d been holding in all morning. Turning his head to sneeze, he rubbed his nose and answered the question Lin Fengqi had first asked, “It’s not too bad. I’m alright.”

Lin Fengqi frowned and reached out to adjust Wen Xia’s coat collar.

When Wen Xia looked up at him, he quickly withdrew his hand, pressing his lips together as if worried he had overstepped.

After a moment of quiet, Wen Xia asked, “Did you finish your business in Z City?”

Lin Fengqi nodded. “Yes.”

Wen Xia continued, “And for the next two days…?”

Lin Fengqi hesitated, searching Wen Xia’s face as if trying to gauge his reaction to what he was about to say.

Wen Xia remained silent, waiting for his response.

If he remembered correctly, Lin Fengqi had mentioned returning on the 4th as well.

This man probably had his itinerary planned out long before.

“For the next two days…” Lin Fengqi finally spoke, his tone carrying a hint of forced resolve, “I’ll be here on business.”

He kept his expression stern, as if simply informing Wen Xia of a fact, seemingly indifferent to how Wen Xia might feel about it.

Well, would you look at that? He’s got some guts now.

Wen Xia thought, but outwardly, he simply replied, “Oh.”

The two of them returned to the rest area together. Lin Fengqi’s presence at the filming site had already attracted plenty of attention. Some had tried to ask Nana who he was, but she kept quiet, leaving them to speculate if he was some executive from Qunjing. Now, seeing him return with Wen Xia, curious glances bounced between the two of them.

Wen Xia acted as if he didn’t notice. Guiqulai handed over two lunchboxes, giving one to him and the other to Lin Fengqi. Lin Fengqi accepted it with a word of thanks.

Guiqulai made small talk before turning to Wen Xia. “By the way, how’s your health?”

“I have a slight fever, but it’s not too bad.” Wen Xia opened the lunchbox and sat back down.

“That still sounds bad,” Guiqulai glanced at the man who had accompanied Wen Xia back but didn’t ask further. “We’ve got more shooting to do in the afternoon. Maybe you should talk to Nana about changing back into your own clothes. Honestly, your style is good enough on its own. Whether they coordinate it or not doesn’t really matter.”

“I’ll talk to her in a bit. Thanks.”

Guiqulai went off to distribute the rest of the lunchboxes. Wen Xia and Lin Fengqi sat together, their food held in their hands since there were no tables around.

But instead of eating, Lin Fengqi stood up and started to leave.

Wen Xia called after him, “Where are you going?”

“Buying medicine,” Lin Fengqi replied curtly, not waiting for a response before walking off.

Wen Xia’s illness had dulled his appetite, and after a few bites, he set the lunchbox aside, playing on his phone while waiting for Lin Fengqi to return.

When Guiqulai returned with his own food, he asked, “Did the boss leave?”

“Boss?”

“We were just guessing. Nana wouldn’t tell us who he was,” Guiqulai said, sitting down beside him. “Do you know him?”

Wen Xia nodded.

“Who is he, then? If you can say.”

Wen Xia glanced at him. “Depends on which of his identities you’re asking about.”

Guiqulai was taken aback. “He’s got layers? What kind of big shot is he?”

Wen Xia asked, “Did you notice the ring on his hand?”

“On his ring finger?” Guiqulai recalled. “Yeah, Xiaomai noticed it first. They were all talking about how it’s a shame this handsome guy got married so young…”

“It’s not a shame.”

“Huh?”

Wen Xia pulled his coat tighter around himself, his tone casual. “He’s married to me. What’s there to be sorry about?”

Guiqulai: “?”

Guiqulai: “???”

Lin Fengqi returned sooner than expected, carrying a plastic bag from a pharmacy.

But for some reason, as he walked back, he couldn’t shake the feeling that people were looking at him differently.

Before, it had been out of curiosity. Now, he felt like he had become a piece of abstract art, with everyone trying to discern some hidden meaning.

He braved these puzzled looks and returned to Wen Xia’s side. Even Wen Xia was staring at him. But rather than curiosity, Wen Xia’s gaze held a mischievous glint, as if he was in an unusually good mood.

“What?” Lin Fengqi asked.

“Nothing,” Wen Xia’s gaze shifted to the bag in Lin Fengqi’s hand. “What medicine did you buy?”

Inside the bag were several types of medicine, including a bottle of water. There were cold medicines, cough suppressants, anti-inflammatory drugs, fever reducers… He had covered all the common causes of a fever. There was even a thermometer.

Wen Xia had told him it was just a chill from not covering up properly last night.

“Let’s check your temperature first.” Lin Fengqi handed him the thermometer.

Wen Xia’s fever wasn’t too high, just 37.4°C, not enough to start with fever-reducing medication. However, his throat was a bit sore, so he took some anti-inflammatory throat medicine with the water.

As Wen Xia took his medication, Lin Fengqi noticed the half-eaten lunch sitting beside him and asked, “No appetite?”

Wen Xia replied, “I’ll eat more in a bit.” He didn’t want to waste it.

Lin Fengqi bent down and felt the outside of the lunchbox. “It’s already cold.”

Wen Xia responded, “Yours is cold too.”

Nana announced that they would resume filming in half an hour, so the two of them sat side by side, eating their cold meals. Wen Xia wasn’t hungry, but he couldn’t let the food go to waste, so he quickly finished it. After packing up his lunchbox, he turned to look at Lin Fengqi.

There he was, dressed in a suit that probably cost a fortune, sitting casually on a small stone stool that Wen Xia had only given a cursory wipe. Despite his elegant demeanor, the lunchbox in his hands looked comically out of place.

It was a slightly ridiculous sight.

Wen Xia chuckled.

Lin Fengqi had already sensed Wen Xia’s gaze. Despite not knowing why, he had always felt especially nervous under Wen Xia’s watchful eyes, fearing that he might do something embarrassing. So when he heard Wen Xia’s laugh, he became even more self-conscious, eating with even more measured and proper movements.

Wen Xia found the spectacle increasingly amusing.

Finally, unable to take it any longer, Lin Fengqi turned to him, his expression hesitant.

Wen Xia raised an eyebrow. “What are you looking at? Just eat.”

Lin Fengqi hesitated. “You…”

“Eat.”

“…”

Lin Fengqi was suddenly reminded of their high school days, sitting across from Wen Xia at the same desk during lunch. Wen Xia always finished faster and would sometimes just stare at him afterward. Back then, Lin Fengqi wondered if he had done something wrong—maybe he had failed in some dining etiquette and was making a fool of himself in front of Wen Xia…

Was he still doing something wrong now?

The more he thought about it, the more anxious he became. But he was too embarrassed to ask, his thoughts spiraling in circles. By the time Lin Fengqi finally finished his meal, he couldn’t even recall how he had managed it.

Half an hour later, filming resumed.

After explaining his situation to Nana, Wen Xia changed back into his own clothes. Nana, considering his illness, adjusted the shooting schedule to film all of his scenes first.

In this area, Wen Xia had a bit of a natural knack—or as the director put it: “A natural pretty boy doesn’t need any special camera presence. The real deal is effortlessly cool!”

Wen Xia: “…”

He decided to take it as a compliment.

With his scenes wrapped up, Nana suggested he head back to the hotel to rest.

The original plan was to film at least two locations today. But with everyone being so inexperienced, it looked like they’d be lucky to finish even one before sunset.

Wen Xia and Lin Fengqi left together. As they walked away, more eyes followed them, trailing their every step.

As they waited for the car, Wen Xia suddenly remembered something important. “Where are you staying?”

Lin Fengqi’s gaze flickered, but he didn’t answer.

Wen Xia looked at him expectantly.

“…I’ll take you back first,” he said.

Wen Xia sensed something was off. “If it’s far, don’t bother. I’m a grown man—I can get to a hotel on my own.”

But Lin Fengqi insisted, “I’ll take you.”

Wen Xia’s suspicious gaze lingered on him.

The car they had hailed arrived, and Wen Xia got in first. As Lin Fengqi bent down to follow, Wen Xia suddenly asked, “You don’t have a place to stay, do you?”

Lin Fengqi had just ducked his head into the car. Startled by the question, he straightened up too quickly, and there was a loud thud as his head collided with the car’s roof. He grunted in pain, reflexively bending down again.

Wen Xia: “…”

You’re really easy to read, aren’t you?

The driver up front was startled by the noise and asked, “You alright, young man?”

“…I’m fine.”

Lin Fengqi quickly composed himself, sitting down as if nothing had happened, closing the car door behind him.

Wen Xia crossed his arms, staring at him with a deadpan expression.

“…”

“…”

After a moment of silence, Wen Xia acted.

Without giving him a chance to react, Wen Xia swiftly reached out and pressed down on the back of Lin Fengqi’s head.

“Hiss—”

Lin Fengqi, caught off guard, jerked in pain, his features nearly scrunching up in response.

He turned to look at Wen Xia, his expression a mix of surprise and a touch of confused hurt.

“You deserve that,” Wen Xia said, letting go. “Now tell me, do you really not have a place to stay?”

Lin Fengqi looked away, guilt evident on his face. After a few seconds, he gave a small nod.

“Coming on a business trip and not booking a hotel?”

The man remained stubbornly silent, lips pressed tightly together.

Wen Xia raised his hand again.

“…You’re here,” Lin Fengqi blurted out quickly, his jawline tensing slightly, “So what’s the point of booking a hotel?”
