ASPWWD Chapter 75

Dowry

Wen Xia realized that he was surprisingly easy to appease.

For instance, just one look from Lin Fengqi, and all his anger would dissolve.

And looking at Lin Fengqi now, there wasn’t a trace left of the cold and indifferent man he used to be when facing him.

Wen Xia pouted and said, “Get up.”

Lin Fengqi obediently stood up and cautiously asked, “You… are you not mad anymore?”

“Who said I’m not mad,” Wen Xia stubbornly replied, “I told you I’m not that easy to appease.”

Upon hearing this, Lin Fengqi frowned slightly, pondered for a moment, and then nodded, “Alright.”

Alright, what?

Lin Fengqi didn’t explain, and Wen Xia wouldn’t find out until Saturday.

That night, Wen Xia abruptly ended his livestream, leaving viewers hanging in the middle of the drama. The chat was filled with cries of disappointment, and both Wen Xia and Lin Fengqi’s inboxes were flooded with messages. There were even long comments trying to piece together the story, which quickly garnered likes and rose to the top.

Even Gui Quilai jumped in to watch the excitement, chatting animatedly in the comment section.

But outside the virtual world, Wen Xia and Lin Fengqi had a heart-to-heart talk.

It wasn’t by chance that Lin Fengqi knew about Wen Xia’s livestream. He had been keeping an eye on Wen Xia’s activities for a long time. However, learning about the games Wen Xia developed was indeed a coincidence. This goes back to his college days.

Lin Fengqi wasn’t much into gaming. He didn’t even have a phone until after graduating from high school, and his only impression of games was from childhood favorites like Mario and King of Fighters.

While in college, Wen Xia developed a pixel RPG purely for fun, to practice his skills. Unexpectedly, it received a good response. Lin Fengqi’s roommate saw a game streamer he followed playing it and decided to try it out himself, after which he enthusiastically recommended it to everyone in their dorm.

Lin Fengqi had a computer by then, a second-hand laptop he bought to save money, but it was more than capable of running a small pixel RPG. The roommate’s recommendation spread throughout the dorm, Lin Fengqi included. Though he was distant with others, the roommate only mentioned it briefly and then moved on, unlike how he pressured the others to install the game.

Initially, Lin Fengqi didn’t think much of it, until one day, after a meeting with a client, the accumulated stress hit him like a ton of bricks, making it hard to breathe. That night, as he sat in the dark, staring at his lit-up laptop, he inexplicably remembered his roommate’s mention of the game.

He downloaded it on a whim.

Lin Fengqi played slowly, taking nearly half a month to complete a game that should’ve taken only a few hours. It was a rare way for him to relax, and he didn’t want to finish it too quickly.

When he finally completed the game, he saw the creator’s name: Deng Xia.

The name made Lin Fengqi like the game even more. He followed the credits to find the creator’s Weibo account and casually followed it.

At the time, he had no idea this was Wen Xia, nor did he have much time to scroll through Weibo—he was too busy. But occasionally, when he remembered, he’d log in to see if the creator had posted any updates on new games. He watched as the creator grew from a solo developer to someone who established a studio. He played every game they released in his spare time.

It wasn’t until Gui Quilai teamed up with this creator for a duo stream that Lin Fengqi realized it was Wen Xia. Lin Fengqi never watched streams or paid attention to these things, but a few days later, when he checked Deng Xia’s page, he noticed a retweet from Gui Quilai featuring a highlight reel from their duo stream.

When he clicked on it, he heard Wen Xia’s voice.

Lin Fengqi couldn’t describe how he felt at that moment. All he knew was that by the time he snapped out of it, the video had ended, and his nose was sore.

Everything that followed was natural. Once he knew it was Wen Xia, he began closely following Weibo. When he learned Wen Xia had started his own stream, he was the first to show support—subscribing, sending gifts, Super Chats… thus began his two-year journey of secretly watching.

As Lin Fengqi recounted this, he slowly wrapped his arms around Wen Xia.

Of course, he left out many details, especially his emotions. But even if he didn’t say it, Wen Xia could imagine.

Wen Xia squeezed the back of Lin Fengqi’s hand and pried his arm off, saying, “Lin Fengqi, don’t you think it feels like fate has been pushing us back together?”

Having been denied a hug, Lin Fengqi’s expression dimmed, but after a moment, he nodded, “Yes.”

Destiny might be a clichéd word, but for lovers, it’s the most romantic thing in the world.

On Saturday, Wen Xia slept in, and after breakfast, Lin Fengqi said, “Can you accompany me somewhere?”

“Where to?” Wen Xia asked.

“Just a quick errand.”

That didn’t really answer anything. But Wen Xia still got ready and went out with him.

Lin Fengqi drove them to… a sales office for a real estate development?

Wen Xia was puzzled. “What are we doing here?”

Lin Fengqi replied, “We’re here to look at houses.”

Wen Xia stared at him, wanting to say something, but Lin Fengqi acted like he didn’t notice, turning off the car and unbuckling his seatbelt.

It was snowing lightly that day. As they got out of the car, a well-trained security guard approached with two umbrellas. Lin Fengqi only took one and then held Wen Xia’s hand, sharing the umbrella with him.

They walked into the sales office, where a receptionist greeted them with a smile. “Hello, how can I help you today?”

Lin Fengqi replied, “I have an appointment with your general manager, Mr. Fang.”

The receptionist blinked in surprise, her smile becoming even more welcoming. “Are you Mr. Lin? Please wait a moment.”

As the receptionist went to notify the front desk, a sales consultant approached them, but Lin Fengqi politely declined. The two of them found a spot to sit down.

It wasn’t until then that Wen Xia broke his silence, speaking in a low voice, “So you knew this was Fang Huai’s family’s development?”

Lin Fengqi carefully observed Wen Xia’s expression and nodded honestly.

“Are you buying a house?” Wen Xia asked.

Lin Fengqi nodded, then shook his head.

“Nodding and shaking your head? What does that mean?”

Lin Fengqi instinctively sat up straight, licked his lips nervously, and said, “I… do want to buy a house, but it’s not just for me.”

Wen Xia had a hunch but still asked, “Then for whom?”

“This house,” Lin Fengqi took a deep breath, reaching out to touch Wen Xia’s ring finger. His thumb brushed over the cool metal of the ring as he softly said, “I want it to be part of my dowry.” He gently squeezed the finger wearing the matching ring, his gaze sincere.

Wen Xia’s heartbeat quickened.

Before he could say anything, a man’s voice interrupted, “Mr. Lin.”

The voice was all too familiar—it could only belong to Fang Huai.

When Fang Huai was in work mode, his tone was all business, devoid of any personal feelings. But Wen Xia had grown up with this fool, and no matter how much Fang Huai tried to act all professional, Wen Xia could see the irritation behind it. He could practically hear the cursing going on in Fang Huai’s head.

The reason was simple: Lin Fengqi was here to check out a house, and he brought Wen Xia with him.

If this deal went through, Wen Xia would become a customer of his family’s real estate business!

This development was a new project by Fang Huai’s family. Not long ago, Fang Lianshu had been bragging to Wen Shan about how great the villas in this new coastal development were—how beautiful the environment was, how well-equipped the facilities were, and so on.

But the Wen family wasn’t in the real estate business, so Wen Shan was baffled by all the boasting. He had jokingly asked, “Are you planning to gift one of these to my son for his wedding? If so, I’ll thank you on his behalf.”

Fang Lianshu had been so mad, his beard had practically puffed up as he retorted, “Dream on! You think we’re just giving these away? Becoming our client, ha! Forget it!”

—And now, it seemed like that might actually happen.

Fang Huai thought to himself, “Is this what they mean by paying off the debts of the previous generation?” But on second thought, if the deal went through, he’d be taking Lin Fengqi’s money. Given the close relationship between Wen Xia and Lin Fengqi, could he even consider this as taking Wen Xia’s money?

Initially, Fang Huai had been reluctant. If it hadn’t been for Fang Lianshu insisting that he personally entertain this big client after hearing Lin Fengqi was coming to see the property, he wouldn’t have bothered.

But thinking it over, Fang Huai felt reinvigorated.

He joined the sales consultant, and the four of them chatted and laughed on the surface.

Wen Xia had originally thought they were just here to find a house for Lin Fengqi. He hadn’t expected it to involve him, so he became incredibly picky. One moment he’d complain that the location was bad, the next that the orientation wasn’t to his liking…

Lin Fengqi and the sales consultant were, of course, patient. Fang Huai, however, was not.

After Wen Xia dismissed yet another house, saying, “Forget it, this one’s too remote,” Fang Huai couldn’t take it anymore. “Are you actually buying a house or just messing with me?”

Wen Xia paused, his gaze drifting over to Fang Huai with a hint of arrogance. “Tsk, is this how you treat your customers?”

Fang Huai’s temple throbbed, and he was at a loss for words.

“What’s the matter, Mr. Fang? Is this how you handle customers?” Wen Xia continued.

The sales consultant wasn’t inexperienced with such situations, but she’d never seen such a big client get angry, especially not at their young boss! Luckily, she was skilled at her job and quickly steered the conversation back to the property. “Mr. Wen, please don’t be upset. If you find this location too remote, how about this one? What do you think of this location?”

Wen Xia caught a glimpse of Fang Huai’s darkened face, barely holding back his anger, and felt extremely satisfied. He did have one in mind, right where the consultant had pointed. So he nodded and said, “This location is okay.”

At first, Wen Xia was just trying to mess with him, but after looking around, he did find something he liked. However, buying a house was no small matter. They couldn’t make a hasty decision after just one visit, so after getting enough information, they headed back.

As he saw them off, Fang Huai’s smile was so wide that his face nearly cracked. It was clear that he was genuinely happy.

When they left, the snow had intensified. Sharing an umbrella, they returned to the car. Lin Fengqi handed the umbrella back to the security guard and closed the car door, but he didn’t start the engine right away. Instead, he turned to look at Wen Xia.

Wen Xia looked back at him, and they sat in silence for a moment.

Inside the car, shielded from the wind, snow, and prying eyes, some of the emotions they had been holding back began to resurface.

Finally, Wen Xia broke the silence. “What made you suddenly think of this?”

“It wasn’t sudden,” Lin Fengqi replied. “I’ve been thinking about it for a long time.”

“I’ve never heard of anyone only thinking about the dowry after getting married,” Wen Xia said.

But then again, their marriage wasn’t exactly conventional.

“So… does this make you a little easier to appease?” Lin Fengqi asked, turning to face him. His deep black eyes sparkled with flecks of light, reflecting Wen Xia’s image.

Wen Xia froze, not expecting him to still remember that remark.

He looked at Lin Fengqi for a moment, then lowered his gaze to the ring on his finger.

Then he did something unexpected.

Lin Fengqi watched as Wen Xia suddenly pulled out his phone and dialed a number. When he saw the name “Old Wen” on the screen, his breath caught.

But Wen Xia seemed completely natural, even turning on the speakerphone.

After about ten seconds, the call connected.

“What’s up, son?” Wen Shan’s voice was cheerful. “Your timing is impeccable; I was just about to call you. Uncle Liao finally has some free time next week, and we’re planning a little outing. You should come along—”

Wen Xia cut him off, “I won’t be joining.”

Wen Shan sounded surprised, “You’re being antisocial again? Uncle Liao specifically—”

Wen Xia interrupted him again, “Check if you’re free before then. Let’s go out for a meal.”

“That’s so sudden. What’s the occasion?” Wen Shan asked, curious.

“It’s something big, something huge,” Wen Xia replied nonchalantly. “I want to introduce you to your son-in-law.”
