When Wen Xia woke up, it was already dark outside.
Lin Fengqi was sitting by the bed. Seeing that Wen Xia was awake, he gently placed the back of his hand on Wen Xia’s forehead and asked in a soft voice, “Do you feel uncomfortable anywhere?”
Wen Xia shifted a little and immediately felt the heaviness in his body, causing him to frown.
Lin Fengqi quickly became concerned, “What’s wrong?”
“It’s nothing,” Wen Xia sighed, feeling parched. “I just want some water.”
“Alright.” Lin Fengqi left the room without hesitation to get some.
A Miao walked over to the bed and rested its chin on the edge. On the other side, Wen Da Ge had also woken up. Stretching lazily, the cat jumped onto the bed and sat on Wen Xia’s chest, purring loudly.
Wen Xia petted both the dog and the cat, but his face started to heat up as he remembered something.
Damn it.
How did it end up with him being on the bottom? Shouldn’t he have been the one pinning Lin Fengqi down?
Although there was a time when he managed to take the lead, things still didn’t turn out as expected.
Wen Xia lay on the bed, fuming in frustration, then suddenly remembered something—what time was it?
He grabbed his phone and realized it was almost 7 PM.
Wen Shan Hai, who had been stood up by both of them, was ready to vent his anger. He called several times, but no one answered, leaving him fuming and sending a flurry of furious messages.
Initially, his tone was still relatively calm: [Where are you? How come I wake up and you both disappear?]
But later, he got angry: [You little brat, are you playing a joke on me? You promised to stay for dinner, and then you sneak off without a word!]
Indeed, Wen Xia and Lin Fengqi were at fault for this. Wen Xia quickly tried to placate him, sending over several red envelopes on WeChat, each containing a mushy message: “Dad, I love you.”
Wen Shan Hai responded with a shiver of disgust: [Cut the crap!]
Wen Xia explained: [We had to go out suddenly to take care of something.]
Wen Shan Hai: [What could possibly be more important than having dinner with your dad?]
Wen Xia effortlessly made up an excuse: [The house caught fire.]
Wen Shan Hai: [Do you take me for a fool?]
A few minutes later.
Wen Shan Hai: [Are you guys okay? How bad was the fire?]
Wen Xia was sitting on the bed drinking the hot milk Lin Fengqi brought him when he replied: [Just kidding.]
After sending the message, he tossed his phone aside, ignoring the barrage of incoming vibrations.
There was no way they could rush back for dinner now. Lin Fengqi initially wanted to go cook, but Wen Xia pulled him back, suggesting it was too much trouble and that they should just order takeout.
While waiting for the food to arrive, the two of them cuddled up in bed watching a movie. Even though it was a suspenseful murder mystery, somehow, they ended up kissing again. Xiao Wu acted as the projector, and the room was dimly lit, with no one caring whether the movie was paused or not until the food delivery call came through.
At that moment, Wen Xia was on the verge of losing control. The ringtone startled him, causing him to grab Lin Fengqi’s arm tightly. Their breaths, mixed with the movie’s sound, made everything even more chaotic.
Lin Fengqi used his free, clean hand to answer the phone with a brief “Just a moment,” then quickly washed his hands to open the door. Wen Xia hadn’t even finished cleaning himself when Lin Fengqi returned with the takeout, setting it on the table before pulling Wen Xia back to continue what they had started.
By the time the movie was over, the takeout had gone cold.
Lin Fengqi reheated the food, but even during dinner, he couldn’t stop himself from leaning in to nuzzle Wen Xia. He ate quickly, and after he was done, he wrapped himself around Wen Xia as if he couldn’t bear to be apart from him for even a second.
He was far clingier than usual.
Wen Xia said, “You’re making it hard for me to eat.”
Lin Fengqi offered, “I’ll feed you.”
Wen Xia replied, “I’m not a child.”
After dinner, Lin Fengqi went to take out the trash. Wen Xia glanced at his phone and saw that Wen Shan Hai had stopped messaging after venting his frustration. However, Liao Xingchen had sent him a brief message: [Congratulations.]
Wen Xia replied with a question mark.
Liao Xingchen: [My dad just called to sigh and complain that I didn’t know how to seize opportunities, letting a great guy slip away.]
Liao Xingchen: [You told your dad, didn’t you?]
Since his son was already married, there was no need for Wen Shan Hai to keep pushing for blind dates. Of course, he had to tell Liao Xingchen’s father. And once Liao’s father found out, he was naturally disappointed that they wouldn’t become in-laws. At the same time, he was frustrated with his son’s lack of initiative, immediately calling to scold him.
Wen Xia didn’t know what was going on between Liao Xingchen and Ming Chuan, so he didn’t pry further.
After that, Wen Shan Hai began to frequently check in on them, calling and messaging regularly—whether he was worried their married life was going too smoothly or not smoothly enough, Wen Xia couldn’t tell.
As for Ye Shixue, Lin Fengqi was the one who reached out to her. The date for the family meeting was pushed back several times before finally being set for the end of the month—New Year’s Eve.
This year, New Year’s Eve fell on a Friday, with New Year’s Day following the next day.
Once December began, the snowfall became more frequent, with continuous snowstorms towards the end of the month. Today, the weather had finally calmed down, with the streets lined with cleared snow, forming small mountains.
The nursing home was particularly lively today, filled with college volunteers and family members who had come for the New Year’s Eve festivities. Wen Xia and Lin Fengqi met Wen Shan Hai at the entrance, and the three of them walked in together.
Wen Shan Hai carried several large bags, filled with fruits and milk, looking like he was visiting relatives for the New Year. Lin Fengqi offered to help carry the bags, but Wen Shan Hai refused and handed half of them to Wen Xia instead. “Here, carry these.”
As they walked further in, Wen Shan Hai commented on the nursing home’s surroundings, saying, “This place is pretty nice. When I get old and my health deteriorates, I’ll come stay here too.”
Wen Xia responded with two loud “ptooey” sounds, “Can’t you say something more positive?”
“Like it or not, it’s the truth. I’m not as closed-minded as you, you little rascal.”
Lin Fengqi chimed in, “This nursing home was opened by my senior.”
“Is that so? That’s wonderful!” Wen Shan Hai was pleased and turned to his son, saying, “Look at Xiao Lin, he’s so considerate.”
Wen Xia retorted, “You’re in an exceptionally good mood today, aren’t you?” His father had been showering Lin Fengqi with compliments all day.
It wasn’t just today—Wen Shan Hai had been in high spirits for the past few days. This was because, a few days ago, Lin Fengqi had run into Fang Lianshu while delivering something to Wen Shan Hai. When Lin Fengqi called Wen Shan Hai “Dad” in front of Fang Lianshu, Fang’s expression turned indescribable.
Wen Shan Hai had never felt more satisfied.
And on top of that, Wen Xia had finally decided to purchase the seaside villa they had checked out earlier—a Fang family property. Sure, they had to pay for it, but the sight of Fang Lianshu’s disgusted reaction was worth every penny. Wen Shan Hai was so pleased that he casually strolled over to Fang’s villa and teased, “Well, it looks like we won’t be neighbors anymore. Hey, Old Fang, what was it you said again? That we’re not worthy to be your customers? Tsk, tsk…”
It was enough to make anyone want to punch him.
Fang Lianshu, face dark as coal, grumbled, “Quit hanging around my house, you’re an eyesore!”
Wen Shan Hai laughed heartily, humming a tune as he leisurely made his way back home.
There was still some time before the New Year’s Eve performance. Ye Shixue knew they were coming and had been preparing all afternoon with her neighbor, Auntie Li, to cook up a feast.
When Wen Shan Hai arrived with all the food, a round of pleasantries ensued. After everyone introduced themselves, Ye Shixue invited them to sit down for a meal.
Wen Shan Hai looked at the spread of dishes and marveled, “So many delicious dishes! Did you cook all this yourself?”
Ye Shixue smiled, “Auntie Li, who lives next door, helped me a lot. I wouldn’t have been able to manage it all on my own.” Although her health had improved, there were still limits. When there was too much to do, she would quickly feel exhausted.
But Wen Shan Hai was gracious, saying, “That’s very kind of you.”
“It’s no trouble at all. I should be the one apologizing for making you come all the way out here. I should’ve prepared something more formal,” Ye Shixue replied.
Wen Shan Hai waved his hand dismissively, “No need for formalities. I’m not that particular.”
The parents got along well, having a serious yet relaxed discussion about their children’s marriage.
Ye Shixue had initially felt a bit nervous. Although she had met Wen Xia many times, she had only looked up Wen Shan Hai online. The search results had informed her of his impressive achievements and vast wealth, making her worry that their families weren’t evenly matched.
In reality, Wen Shan Hai didn’t care about such things. He only cared about the person.
After all, as a father, he just wanted his child to be healthy and happy.
The New Year’s Eve performance began at 8 PM.
The venue wasn’t too large but not too small either. With so many people, it became quite crowded, forcing the nursing home to provide additional seating for the event.
Despite the crowd, the performance exceeded expectations, with even those who had initially complained about having to stand enjoying themselves by the end.
The event concluded around 10:30 PM, and the crowd slowly dispersed.
Ye Shixue and Wen Shan Hai chatted for a while longer, both satisfied with the first meeting of the families. As they were leaving, Wen Shan Hai patted Wen Xia on the shoulder, saying, “Make sure to bring Xiao Lin over to visit his mom more often.”
Wen Xia nodded, “Got it.”
Wen Shan Hai hadn’t drunk any alcohol, so he drove himself home, leaving the three of them to part ways in the parking lot.
Even though it was late, the parking lot was still lively, with many families leaving the nursing home at this time. Snowflakes drifted gently through the air, illuminated by the warm glow of the streetlights.
After watching his father’s car disappear into the distance, Wen Xia suddenly turned to Lin Fengqi and asked, “Now that both parents have met, does that mean we’re officially locked in?”
With so many people around, Lin Fengqi resisted the urge to kiss him. Instead, he squeezed Wen Xia’s hand tightly and replied, “We always have been.”
Looking into his bright, determined eyes, Wen Xia suddenly had an idea. He pulled his hand free and started pushing Lin Fengqi towards the car. “Let’s hurry home.”
“Huh?”
“There’s something I need to do.”
When they arrived home, there was still plenty of time before midnight.
Wen Xia took off his scarf, greeted the enthusiastic A Miao, and then scooped up the meowing Wen Da Ge for a thorough cuddle. Only then did he finally feel like the busy day was winding down.
But there was still one last thing to do.
He led Lin Fengqi to their room. Over the past few days, most of the things from the guest bedroom had been moved back to the master bedroom, including the bookshelf full of books and—the diary.
Wen Xia searched for a pen while instructing Lin Fengqi, “Give me your diary.”
Lin Fengqi asked, “Which one?”
By now, he was completely immune to Wen Xia reading his diary. After all, everything that should or shouldn’t have been read had already been exposed. Even if he wasn’t immune, if Wen Xia wanted to read it, he could do so anytime.
“The one from high school,” Wen Xia replied.
This diary contained most of Lin Fengqi’s secrets, bearing witness to his self-proclaimed one-sided dream during his teenage years.
Wen Xia took the diary and sat at the desk, flipping through it until he reached the part where Lin Fengqi had resumed writing after watching his livestream—
September 20, 20XX, Sunny
Made a decision.
I hope I can make it happen.
Wen Xia pointed to this entry and asked, “Was this decision about proposing to me?”
Lin Fengqi’s eyes flickered as he nodded, “Yes.”
By then, the date for the class reunion had already been set. Lin Fengqi had agonized for a long time over whether or not to go. He feared Wen Xia wouldn’t want to see him, but he couldn’t shake the overwhelming desire to see Wen Xia again.
During the two years he had spent listening to Wen Xia’s voice from behind a screen, Lin Fengqi had never stopped yearning to see him.
So, he thought, just this once. I’ll take the risk this one time.
He had plenty of reasons to go and was determined to find a way to persuade Wen Xia.
Their eyes met, and Wen Xia blinked before picking up a pen. He flipped back to the last entry from high school, where Lin Fengqi had truly stopped writing. The next moment, fresh black ink flowed onto the page, forming one word after another in a distinctly different handwriting—a brand-new diary entry:
November X, 20XX, Sunny
Today, the results of the midterm exams were posted. When I went to check the rankings for the top fifty in the grade, I accidentally stepped on someone’s foot.
His name is Lin Fengqi. He’s a very special person.
Lin Fengqi’s breath hitched, his heartbeat quickening, but Wen Xia didn’t look at him. Instead, he continued writing.
It might have been December X, 20XX, maybe cloudy
Saw Lin Fengqi during the morning exercises. Why does something as simple as a school uniform look so good on him?
He seems to like wearing turtleneck sweaters. They suit him well.
He really looks great.
…
The pen continued to glide across the paper.
I don’t remember the date, but it was in 20XX, and I don’t recall the weather
I think I might be in love with Lin Fengqi.
At this point, Wen Xia paused and looked up at Lin Fengqi.
Lin Fengqi’s gaze had fallen, and his eyes were tinged with red.
Wen Xia quietly observed him for a moment before returning to his writing. He began to chronicle every memory deeply imprinted in his mind, every moment with Lin Fengqi, from high school all the way to graduation.
After that, he flipped further ahead to the last entry from before, where he resumed writing—
October 11, 20XX, Sunny
I made it happen.
From now on, this will be the anniversary of Wen Xia and Lin Fengqi’s marriage.
October 12, 20XX, Sunny
I moved in with Lin Fengqi. Even though it was due to a contract.
But I think I’m a little happy about it.
I guess you could say I’m weak.
…
…
Time slowly crept toward the present.
When Wen Xia finished writing the last few lines for the night, the distant sound of a New Year’s countdown echoed from afar.
It was midnight.
He set the pen down.
And in that instant, Lin Fengqi leaned in and kissed him.
There was a hint of salt from tears mixed into the kiss.
The chimes of the New Year reverberated in the night sky as snow fell steadily. Despite the lively celebrations in the city center, the lights shone brightly through the night.
The snow continued to fall until the first light of dawn, and then it stopped.
On the desk, the diary was left open, the ink from Wen Xia’s writing had dried, but another new entry had been added, this one in a different handwriting.
The two different sets of handwriting, though distinct, blended seamlessly together as if they were always meant to be connected, inseparable.
December 31, 20XX, Snow
Happy New Year.
I love you.
January 1, 20XX, Sunny
I love you.
