“Can I kiss you?”

Even though he may have been seeking her opinion, but damn, he had no intention of waiting for her answer

Ji Bai could only look on helplessly as the young man closed his eyes without a care and leaned in for a kiss.

At the critical moment, Ji Bai used her hand to block her own mouth, keeping his kiss at bay.

Xie Sui ended up kissing the back of her hand,  which was smooth and slightly cold. He opened his eyes and looked at her, and the two of them locked eyes. In Ji Bai’s eyes, there was a hint of caution and confusion.

Xie Sui seemed unfazed by being blocked. He closed his eyes again and passionately kissed her hand.

His lips were quite warm and left an impression on the back of her hand.

A gentle breeze passed by causing the young man’s fine eyelashes to tremble ever so lightly, and his face also turned red.

**

Ji Bai pushed her bike as she walked back home. Her legs felt so weak that she didn’t have the strength to pedal anymore.

There was a light breeze blowing but the heat on her face still couldn’t dissipate.

Damn it…that was a close call. Her first kiss was almost stolen by the little troublemaker.

Ji Bai entered the garden and parked her bike in a corner covered with lush green vines. From this distance, she could hear the sound of Ji Feifei weeping inside the house.

“Mom, I want to attend the annual meeting. Please call grandmother and ask her to let me go. I beg you, wu, wu, wu.”

Ji Bai pushed open the door and entered the house. Ji Feifei was sitting on the sofa, holding tissues in her hand. She was crying like pear blossoms after the rain,1(梨花带雨) – lí huā dài yǔ – lit. like raindrops on a pear blossom (idiom) / fig. tear-stained face of a beauty. Meaning:  It suggests that the Ji Feifei’s tears are reminiscent of the way raindrops glisten on the petals of a pear blossom, emphasizing their beauty and fragility. and her eyes were all swollen.

Their father and mother sat beside her, anxiously comforting her, “Fei Fei, please stop crying. It hurts mom’s heart when you cry.”

“Call grandmother, call her right now!”!”

Tao Jiazhi nudged Ji Mingzhi, “Make the call, quickly call your mom. Why shouldn’t Fei Fei attend the annual meeting? She’s well aware of Fei Fei’s condition and how she can’t handle any emotional stress.”

Ji Mingzhi reluctantly picked up his phone and dialed Old lady Ji’s number.

After a while, he put down the phone and said, “Assistant Qin said that the mom is still in a meeting.”

“What kind of meeting is she in? It’s been a whole day already. I think she’s deliberately avoiding our calls.”

Ji Feifei started crying even louder.

Tao Jiazhi suggested to Ji Mingzhi, “Why don’t you find some time and personally visit the head office? Beg the old lady.”

Ji Mingzhi wrinkled his eyebrows, deeply worried he said, “Every time I go to the head office, it’s either to report about losses or capital requirements. It’s never a good thing. Now, I have to beg for a small matter like this. I can’t lower myself like that. If you want to go, go on your own. I won’t go.”

Upon hearing this, Ji Feifei grabbed Tao Jiazhi’s hand and pleaded, “Mom, only you can help me.”

Tao Jiazhi also felt very conflicted and sighed without saying a word.

Old lady Ji was a person of great influence and determination. The decisions she made weren’t something they could change just by begging her.

“Fei Fei ah, how about we just forget it? If you can’t attend the head office’s annual meeting, you can still attend our company’s annual meeting.”

Ji Feifei said in disdain, “I’m not going to your little company that’s losing money! How embarrassing!”

Once Ji Mingzhi heard this, he got angry and said, “Why, are you looking down on your parents?”

Tao Jiazhi immediately gave him a little slap and said, “Ai ya,2(哎呀) – āi yā – interjection of wonder, shock or admiration Don’t argue. You have no abilities yourself, so why bother scolding the child?”

“Hmph,  I can see that you spoiled her, that’s why she has such a bad temper!”

Ji Bai silently entered the house with her school bag, and prepared to go upstairs. “Mom, Dad, I’m back. I’m going to my room to do my homework.”

“You wait!” Ji Feifei suddenly directed her anger towards Ji Bai. “You stole my spot for the annual meeting. Grandmother said that it was originally for me, it’s all your fault for stealing my spotlight!”

Ji Bai’s footsteps paused for a moment, and she calmly said, “It was originally for you, but why did grandmother change her mind? Don’t you have any idea in your heart? If it weren’t for your unreasonable behavior, would I have had this opportunity?”

At this moment, the aunty brought the medicine over, “Eldest young miss, it’s time to take your medicine.”

Ji Feifei started crying and screaming, “Mom, grandmother doesn’t even like me anymore. What’s the point of me being alive? I might as well not bother getting better!”

Tao Jiazhi  panicked, “Fei Fei ah, you must by all means never have such thoughts. Come, take your medicine.”

“If she doesn’t give me the spot, then I won’t take the medicine!”

Ji Bai stood on the stairs, coldly observing her performance.

Tao Jiazhi said, “Bai Bai, go talk to grandmother and ask her to give the spot to your older sister. Look at how your older sister’s health has deteriorated. You’re her younger sister, ah”

Ji Bai remained expressionless, “Grandmother said she wants to have a music concert at the annual meeting and invited me to play the cello. If Mom doesn’t want me to attend, you can go and talk to grandmother herself.”

Tao Jiazhi was also at a loss, feeling helpless and unsure of what to do.

Ji Feifei suggested, “Just tell grandmother that you’re not feeling well that day and can’t go!”

“Older sister, you haven’t figured out the key point here. For the annual meeting of the Ji Group, one more person won’t make a difference. Grandmother can easily invite both of us sisters to attend it together, why not? Be smart about it, even if I don’t go, you won’t be able to go either.”

She left these words behind, turned to go upstairs, and went into her room.

Ji Feifei continued to cry and make a scene downstairs, but everything became quiet as Ji Bai put on noise-canceling headphones. She took out her test papers and began working on it.

In her second chance at life, Ji Bai wanted to work hard and get into the top university, S University. She wanted to plan a bright future for herself, rather than ending up like in her previous life, where she ignorantly attended a mediocre university and ultimately relied on her parents’ support, feeling like she was being drained…3Meaning: Ji Bai felt like she became dependent on her parents to the point where it was draining her, similar to how a vampire metaphorically sucks the lifeblood from its victim

Ji Bai focused on doing her studies, and as her hand reached for the pink cherry blossom cup on the table, she realized it was already empty. She got up to fetch some hot water, unexpectedly, when she was about to go out, she saw Ji Feifei leaning against the wall, staring at her coldly.

Her eyes were slightly red and there were traces of tears that hadn’t been wiped away, making her look disheveled.

In front of her, Ji Feifei stopped pretending and revealed her true face. “Ji Bai, why did you take what’s mine?”

Ji Bai clenched the empty cup. “What do you mean what’s yours?”

“You stole my spotlight and even took away my opportunities! Even Mom and Dad aren’t as obedient to me as they used to be!”

“Do you think these things were supposed to belong to you in the first place?”

“Ji Bai, there’s no need for you to feel wronged.” Ji Feifei maliciously sneered and said, “Dad and Mom only had you because they needed to provide me with blood for my treatment. Your existence is meant to serve me, do you understand? You’re not even worthy of being my younger sister. You’re nothing but a living blood bank for me. You’re not even worthy of being human. You’re just a dog in our family”

“Older sister, be careful with your words. You’re insulting me.”

“What’s wrong with insulting you?! You’ve taken everything from me, and now I have nothing left! What more do you want?!”

Ji Bai walked up to her and lightly patted her fierce-looking face.

Ji Feifei slapped her hand away.

“Ji Feifei, is this really having nothing left?”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, is this really the end for you?” Ji Bai said in a deep voice. “Everything you took from me, I’ll make sure you slowly spit them out.”

After Ji Bai finished speaking, she turned and went back to her room without looking at Ji Feifei’s reaction.

Ji Feifei stood frozen for a while and then suddenly rushed out as if she had gone insane, shouting “Dad, Mom! Just a moment ago, Ji Bai said she wants to kill me! You…you have to kick her out! I don’t want to live with her anymore!”

“…”

“……”

She caused a commotion, but her parents didn’t come to confront Ji Bai instead Ji Mingzhi said, “Fei Fei ah, I’ve scheduled an appointment with the doctor. Tomorrow, come with Dad to see the doctor, okay?”

“Why do I have to go see a doctor, didn’t the doctor say my condition was stable?!”

“Well, it’s like this, this doctor specializes in psychology.”

Ji Feifei was dumbfounded, “What…do you think I’m crazy?!”

Tao Jiazhi sternly said, “Fei Fei, your mental state is clearly abnormal right now. Listen to Mom and go to the hospital with Dad tomorrow and talk to the doctor!”

“I’m telling the truth! Ji Bai really said she wants to kill me!”

“Fei Fei! Stop with your delusions! Dad and Mom watched your younger sister grow up. We know her character better than you do. There’s no way she would say something like that! These words are more likely to come from your mouth!”

Ji Feifei, looking frustrated, retreated and ran back to her room in tears.

To drive someone to their downfall, first drive them insane.

Ji Bai stood by the door, recalling every word Ji Feifei had said just a moment ago——

“Dad and Mom only had you because they needed to provide me with blood for my treatment.”

“You’re nothing but a living blood bank for me.”

“You’re not even worthy of being human. You’re just a dog in our family.”

……

This was just the beginning; someday she would pay the price for her words and actions.

As Ji Bai expected, five minutes later, Ji Feifei posted a message on Weibo——

“Ji Bai, that bitch! She’s so scheming, she actually threatened to kill me and pretended to be a good person in front of Dad and Mom! She’s nothing more than a white lotus4(白莲花) – bái lián huā – (sarcastic, slang, especially of a female) one who appears sweet and innocent but is actually corrupt, cunning or deceitful. in this golden age! She’s so despicable! She infuriates me to death! @XiaoXin’sXiaoXiaoBai, everyone help me curse this bitch to death, damned dog!!”5(死狗) – sǐ gǒu – dead/damned dog. Meaning: In Chinese, comparisons of people to animals, is usually used to insult or demean someone (here by comparing Ji Bai to a dog).

After Ji Feifei tagged Ji Bai in her post, Ji Bai’s phone continued to receive a flood of messages, with many comments from people who weren’t aware of the true situation, mostly curious bystanders——

[What’s going on? Are the sisters having a falling out?]

[Fei Bao’s tone is so strange today.]

[I suspect her account has been hacked.]

[Fei Bao, is it really you?]

[Her goddess image has crumbled.]

[No, even if there’s a conflict between sisters, she shouldn’t use such language to curse someone.”]

[She’s asking us to help her curse someone. Is she using us as her tools?]

……

Ji Feifei usually portrayed herself as an optimistic and positive person. Therefore, when this violent post was published, it caused quite a stir6(一石激起千层浪)  – yī shí jī qǐ qiān céng làng – One stone stirred up waves. Meaning: an act or an incident can cause great repercussions; a trifle may evoke great turbulence., leaving her fans shocked.

No one heeded her call to hurl abuse at Ji Bai, instead people had all kinds of misgivings and various speculations on why Ji Feifei had changed.

[Actually calling her own younger sister a ‘bitch.’ Unbelievable!]

[Unfollowed. From a fan to a passerby. Goodbye.]

In just over ten minutes after posting this Weibo, Ji Feifei lost a staggering twenty thousand followers!

Ji Feifei realized that the situation was turning against her, so she quickly deleted the Weibo post.

Yet, it was too late. Many people had already taken screenshots of the Weibo post, and many fans who hadn’t had a chance to see the it went online to search for “Ji Feifei cursing people”.

Consequently, the hashtag #JiFeifeicursingpeople including the Weibo screenshots became a trending topic within a few hours. People from all over the internet came to see what the fuss was about regarding Ji Feifei cursing people.

[I thought she was really as she portrayed on Weibo, living a peaceful life. Tsk. ]

[It was all an act I presume, just a persona.]

[Don’t you dare scold our Fei Bao!]

[Our Fei Bao’s simply having a bad day. Give her a break.]

[Upstairs, look at all the brain-dead fans defending her.7(舔狗) – tiǎn gǒu –  literally translates to “licking dog” and is a slang term for someone who flatters or blindly worships someone else.(脑残粉) – nǎo cán fěn – Meaning:”brain-dead fans” and refers to fans who are extremely devoted but lack critical thinking or perspective. ]

[Take a closer look, your goddess can go from calling someone a bitch to calling them a damned dog. How dirty must her heart be to curse others!]

……

Ji Feifei spent the entire night holding her phone, both her hands trembling as she read the criticism and insults directed at her. The consequences of what she had done to An Kerou were now coming back to haunt her.

She spent a sleepless night.

The next morning, she finally posted an apology statement——

“Yesterday, due to my poor physical condition, it affected my mood. I would like to apologize to the netizens, especially my fans. Please forgive me for my actions, considering that I am a patient. I promise I won’t do it again in the future.”

[Pats Fei Bao, what’s done is done. We, fans, don’t blame you.]

[Exactly, everyone has their bad days. We understand. Those who are hurling insults should calm down. Fei Bao isn’t a saint.]

[ You should apologize to your younger sister, ok?]

[That’s right, no matter what kind of conflict you had, you shouldn’t have cursed at her like that. ]

[Her goddess image has already crumbled, she won’t be seen in the public eye anymore, okay?]

……

Nevertheless, Ji Feifei still didn’t apologize to Ji Bai. She lost tens of thousands of her loyal fans, and those who remained were also very disappointed in her. At the same time, there were many onlookers who weren’t her fans but were there to watch the drama unfold online.

To make up for the damage caused by her previous post, Ji Feifei posted several positive and uplifting posts on Weibo. She would either share about enjoying delicious food or showcase her shopping experiences, expressing her love for life.

However, it was evident to the naked eye that the number of comments on her posts had decreased significantly, with it being less than one-third of what it used to be. Not only that, the comments were no longer harmonious praises but instead contained a fair amount of mockery and ridicule.

Ji Bai didn’t expect Ji Feifei’s image to crumble so quickly. She realized that she didn’t even need to do anything herself as Ji Feifei was capable of ruining her own reputation.

**

The arrival of late autumn was accompanied by the continuous patter of raindrops, and overnight, the temperature suddenly became cooler. Many students put on cotton-padded jackets and cashmere coats.

Jiang City is surrounded by mountains and rivers,  and in the winter, the damp cold could chill one to the bone.

As the wind blew, the withered and yellow leaves of the ginkgo trees fell to the ground.

Therefore, on Friday afternoon during the last two classes, the school organized students for a general cleaning, and those who volunteered could earn extra conduct points.

Ji Bai and her close friends eagerly signed up to participate in the cleaning, and were assigned to take care of the school’s small garden.

Yin Xiaxia held a bucket in one hand and a cleaning rag in the other, wiping the statue of Lu Xun8(鲁迅) or (魯迅)) – Lǔ Xùn – Lu Xun (1881-1936), one of the earliest and best-known modern Chinese writers. and Hu Shi9(胡适) or (胡適))- Hú Shì – Hu Shi (1891-1962), original proponent of writing in colloquial Chinese. placed in the center of the flower bed.

“Xiao Bai, does it look good?”

She gathered a bunch of flowers that were on the ground and placed them in the hand of the statue of Lu Xun, who was holding a cigarette.

Ji Bai chuckled and walked over to brush off the dead leaves and petals from the statue. “You, don’t do that. Show some respect for our honorable predecessors.”

“How  interesting.”

“Stop fooling around and get to work, okay?”

“Okay.”

Ji Bai took a broom and went to the stone path on the side of the garden. Due to the rain from the previous night, the path was damp, with many dead leaves and flowers scattered along the side.

Ji Bai bent down and carefully swept the leaves on the ground.

Xie Sui and his friends walked past the sports field, carrying a basketball. By chance, he glanced sideways and saw the girl.

She was wearing a thin and white waterproof transparent coat, with the sleeves rolled up to the cuffs, revealing a fair portion of her arms. The strands of hair by her temples were tucked behind her ears, exposing her cute face.

Perhaps because of the particularly gloomy weather today, the dark green background made her features appear exceptionally clear and pure.

So obedient.

Xie Sui couldn’t help but walk towards her, and behind him, Cong Yuzhou shouted,  “Brother Sui, we have a game tonight.”

“I’ll be there.”

“Alright, don’t be late.” Cong Yuzhou expressed quite concerned, “Being late will result in a fine!”

“I know.”

Ji Bai swept the floor while taking out her phone to change songs, not hearing the whistle behind her.

It was only when she turned around that she saw Xie Sui crouching on the damp flower bed, holding a cigarette and gazing at her from a distance, not knowing how long he had been looking at her.

Ji Bai took off one of her earphones and asked puzzled, “What are you doing here?”

“Can’t you tell?”

He was smoking.

Ji Bai pointed at a surveillance camera and said, “There’s a camera here. You might get penalized.”

Xie Sui jumped off the flower bed and pressed the cigarette butt into the soil of the flower bed. “Thanks for the reminder.”

The sky started to drizzle again, not heavy, but the raindrops felt like feathers falling on their faces.

Xie Sui said, “It’s raining.”

“Oh.”

Ji Bai pulled her hood over her head.

Xie Sui rolled his eyes,  “You really are trying to be a do-gooder.10(学雷锋) or (學雷鋒) – xué léi fēng – learn from Lei Feng. Meaning: Lei Feng was a soldier in the People’s Liberation Army who was a person who did good deeds based on the diary that he had left behind which told the story of his acts of charity and service to the people.

“I’ll earn conduct points.”

Ji Bai meticulously swept all the leaves on the ground into the dustpan and then emptied it into the trash can.

Xie Sui approached her and tried to take the broom from her hand, but Ji Bai took two steps back and didn’t give it to him.

“What are you doing?”

“What else? Helping you.”

Ji Bai asked suspiciously, “Are you trying to steal my conduct points?”

“……”

“Who the fuck wants those damn conduct points?”

Ji Bai refused to let him take over. Xie Sui who was panting with rage returned to the tree watching her for a moment before saying, “I’m leaving. I have a boxing match tonight.”

“Oh.”

Xie Sui took a couple of steps, and it seemed like the raindrops were getting larger. He frowned, paused for a few seconds, and then quickened his pace as he walked away.

Who cares about her.

Half an hour later, Yin Xiaxia sent a voice message to Ji Bai asking if she had finished. Ji Bai replied, “I still have a bit more to do here. It’s raining. If you’re done, you can leave first. No need to wait for me.”

Yin Xiaxia: “Okay,  I’ll go back to the classroom and work on my homework for a while. I definitely won’t finish it tonight!”

Ji Bai: “Okay, quickly go.”

Locking the screen, the reflection on the smooth black screen was no longer the gloomy sky but a blue checkered umbrella.

Ji Bai was astonished as she looked up, unaware that at some point, Xie Sui was standing behind her. He had one hand in his pocket, and the other was holding an umbrella, with a frown on his face as he gazed at her.

“Why did you come back?”

“Why are you talking so much nonsense? Hurry up and start sweeping.”

“No…I’m wearing a raincoat and don’t you have something else to do?”

“If you keep talking nonsense, Laozi will take your conduct points.”

After Xie Sui finished speaking, he tried to grab the broom from her hands, but Ji Bai  quickly dodged and bent down to continue sweeping, “I’ll do it myself.”

Xie Sui just stood there with the umbrella. Wherever she went, he followed, ensuring that the umbrella was tilted to her side, ensuring that not a single raindrop touched her.

Ji Bai unintentionally turned her head and saw that Xie Sui’s whole shoulder was completely wet and his ash gray coat had a large dark patch. His hair was wet and hanging on his forehead, looking quite like he cut a sorry figure.11(狼狈) – láng bèi – in a difficult situation / to cut a sorry figure / scoundrel! (derog.). Meaning: to appear in a pitiful, embarrassed, or unfortunate state, often due to one’s appearance, behavior, or circumstances. It implies that someone looks or seems quite miserable or unimpressive in a particular situation.

But he seemed completely oblivious to it.

Ji Bai pursed her lips and moved a bit closer to him, allowing the umbrella to cover both of them.

Xie Sui noticed the girl getting closer and caught a faint whiff of the light scent emanating from her. It was a scent that belonged to girls, completely different from the smell of sweat and stinky feet that often clung to boys. It was as if they belonged to two completely different worlds…

When the dustpan was full of dead leaves, Xie Sui didn’t let her touch it. He handed her the umbrella, then bent over, holding the dustpan, and ran toward a nearby trash can, dumping all the leaves into it.

When he returned, his clothes were completely soaked. He no longer sheltered himself under the umbrella and stood in the rain, holding the dustpan.

Ji Bai wanted to share the umbrella with him, but Xie Sui stepped back. “No need.”

After all, they were both already wet.

Ji Bai felt a pang of guilt and thanked him.

The heavy rain made it hard for Xie Sui to keep his eyes open, he suddenly spoke in a deep voice, “Xiao Bai, listen. From now on, come find me whenever there’s this kind of hard work. I’ll help you, and I won’t steal your conduct points.”

Ji Bai blinked her eyes in confusion.

Xie Sui glanced at the dirty dustpan in his hand, thought for a moment, and said somewhat embarrassed, “Your hands are clean. Just focus on playing your cello. All the dirty and tiring work…leave them to me.”

Ji Bai’s heart trembled fiercely at once.

It was like a prophecy fulfilled. The Xie Sui in the previous life, protected her like a princess and had done a lot of things for her including the dirty, the tiring, the hidden ones…

**

The winter sunlight was hard to come by as such Xie Sui leaned against the window bathed in its warmth, half-asleep.

In the back row of the classroom, several boys were watching a video on their phones. It was the school’s recently released promotional video, including a scene of Ji Bai leading the radio exercise. This scene lasted for a full twenty seconds and included a close-up shot from the front.

In the video, the young girl’s fair complexion radiated a brilliant smile, and her clear eyes appeared exceptionally transparent in the sunlight.

The boys whispered among themselves——

“Isn’t Ji Bai extremely beautiful!”

“She’s way prettier than her older sister!”

“Fuck, if Laozi had known earlier, I wouldn’t have chased after her older sister and get laughed at. Laozi should have gone straight for her!”

“Hahaha, that’s right, Brother Yao. You would definitely have a chance with her. This girl has never been pursued by a guy before. Maybe she’s been thirsty for it, and be an easy catch!”

“Now’s not too late either. Look at how innocent she is, the experience would definitely be satisfying.”

……

The boys gathered together and when it came to talking about girls, most of them didn’t have anything good to say.

Cong Yuzhou had a premonition that something bad was going to happen, so he turned his head to the side, and sure enough, Xie Sui opened his eyes.

“Brother Sui……”

Xie Sui got up and walked through the crowd until he was in front of  Yao Wu, who had made inappropriate comments. He grabbed Yao Wu’s collar and lifted him up, pressing him forcefully against the wall——

“Let me give you some advice. You aren’t allowed to mention Ji Bai’s name with your filthy mouth for the rest of your life.”

There was a ruthless glint in his eyes, indicating that he was truly angry.

Yao Wu, who relied on his family’s wealth, often abused his power in the class, relying on the strong and bullying the weak and never hesitated to assert his dominance.

He broke free from Xie Sui’s grip and sneered, “Oh, it turns out even Brother Sui has taken an interest? What should we do? It seems like we can only compete freely. How about we go and measure ourselves in the restroom, and then let Ji Bai choose for herself?”

Cong Yuzhou sensed trouble the instant he saw Xie Sui’s eyes suddenly turn bloodshot. Before he could intervene, Xie Sui immediately grabbed an iron chair nearby and swung it at Yao Wu!

There was a muffled sound as the iron chair firmly hit Yao Wu’s hard head, causing it to split open! Fresh blood flowed down from his forehead, resembling wriggling bloodworms, streaming down his face.

Drip, drip, the blood flowed all over the place.

The entire classroom fell silent for a full ten seconds before erupting into chaos.

“Yao Wu is bleeding!”

“Are you okay? Oh my god, there’s so much blood. Quick, call the teacher!”

“Forget calling the teacher! Take him to the infirmary!”

Yao Wu hadn’t even reacted yet, his hand covered his head as blood flowed out from between his fingers.

“If you dare mention her name again, Laozi will kill you.”

Xie Sui coldly finished talking, throwing the chair aside and storming off.

Several boys in the class surrounded Yao Wu and helped him out of the school building. Many other students rushed to the balcony to watch the commotion.

Yin Xiaxia hurried back to the classroom and told Ji Bai who was working on exercises, “I heard that just now…Xie Sui got into a fight!”

Ji Bai’s handwriting abruptly trailed off at a long stroke. She turned to Yin Xiaxia and asked, “Xie Sui would never resort to violence at school, let alone beat up classmates. Are you sure you didn’t mistake him for someone else?”

Yin Xiaxia was also unsure, saying, “I didn’t see it with my own eyes, but someone came out from Class 19, holding their head and bleeding all over the place. They said it was Xie Sui. But now that you mention it, I’ve never seen him get physical at school either. I’m not sure if it’s true or not.”

The bell for the next class rang, and the two of them stopped discussing the matter.

Ji Bai wasn’t entirely at ease, so after the dismissal, she took her time unlocking her bike in the bike shed. She occasionally glanced up at the classroom on the third floor, Class 19.

Normally, she would usually spot his figure coming out with a basketball around this time, but he was nowhere to be seen today.

As Ji Bai pushed her bike out of the shed, she saw Cong Yuzhou and a few other boys coming out of the Yifu Building.12(逸夫) – yì fū – Yifu. Meaning: The Yifu Buildings nationwide are named after the Hong Kong media tycoon and philanthropist Sir Run Run Shaw, or Shao Yifu. He donated billions of HK$  to support education and healthcare in China. Ji Bai walked over and asked, “I heard that someone in your class got injured just a moment ago?”

“Yeah, we just came from the Academic Affairs Office…” Jiang Zhongning was about to speak but was interrupted by Cong Yuzhou, who pulled him back and cut him off.

“He was told not to stand on the table when fixing the light bulb. Yet, he insisted on standing on it so he got what he deserved by falling. It’s not a big deal, it was just a little scrape, nothing life-threatening.” Cong Yuzhou replied.

Ji Bai nodded without asking any further questions. She glanced behind them but didn’t see that familiar figure.

Cong Yuzhou said, “Brother Sui had something to take care of so he went back first.”

She withdrew her gaze embarrassed, and muttered, “I didn’t ask.” before getting on her bike and leaving.

Jiang Zhongning asked Cong Yuzhou, confused, “Why didn’t you tell her the truth?! Brother Sui got into a fight for her and was disciplined.”

Cong Yuzhou gave him a sidelong glance, “Do you dare to repeat those vulgar and obscene words that Yao Wu said about her to her? Believe it or not, Xie Sui can give you another beating on your melon head.13(脑袋瓜) or  (腦袋瓜) – nǎo dài guā – Head melon. Meaning: the word guā (瓜; melon or gourd) is used in insults: shǎguā (傻瓜; also shǎzi, 傻子) = dummy, fool, idiot
