Before setting off, Fang Pingping came over in a hurry.
He didn’t know what had happened, he only knew that Yu Lan had encountered some kind of trouble. Seeing that he seemed to have recovered by now, he breathed a sigh of relief and didn’t dare to ask too much.
In reality, Yu Lan knew that if it wasn’t for Mr. Shao staying by his side, he might not have been able to calm down so quickly——After realizing that his memories had been tampered with extensively by human traffickers, his emotions had briefly teetered on the brink of collapse.
“Oh, by the way.” Fang Pingping hesitated for a moment before asking, “The studio is planning to buy apartments for the models. Do you want us to reserve one for you?”
Yu Lan was taken aback.
Fang Pingping felt that Yu Lan was living quite comfortably in the big boss’ villa so he assumed he probably didn’t need an apartment. Nevertheless, he asked just to be sure.
To his surprise, Yu Lan actually gave it some serious thought.
Fang Pingping exclaimed, “Do you really want to move out?”
Yu Lan also looked surprised, “Didn’t you ask me?”
“…….” Fang Pingping rubbed his face, “That, do you want it then?”
“I’ll think about it. I’ll let you know after we get back. Is that okay?” Yu Lan asked.
What could Fang Pingping say? All he could say was, “Okay, let me know once you’ve made up your mind.”
After leaving the hospital room, he regretted being so nosy and wondered if he should inform the big boss about it. In the end, he was terrified and just slipped away.
——Maybe Yu Lan would change his mind later.
Before Yu Lan and Shao Mingyu officially set off, the doctor performed the first memory treatment on Yu Lan, clearing all memories related to the orphanage from his mind.
“Clearing” didn’t mean completely deleting those memories from Yu Lan’s mind but rather making his brain fully understand that these memories were fictional like “novels” or “movies” and not something Yu Lan had actually experienced in the past.
When the treatment was over, by a lucky coincidence, it was the afternoon of this planet, with the sky dark and overcast accompanied by the sound of thunder.
Subconsciously, Shao Mingyu pulled the person next to him into his arms, but he noticed that the youth was gazing at the lightning on the horizon without any sign of fear on his face.
After a pause, Shao Mingyu let go.
However, the youth took the initiative to hug him and rubbed against his shoulder.
“Ah Lan?” Shao Mingyu’s voice was gentle.
Yu Lan gently spoke, “They implanted memories of the orphanage into us, merely to intimidate us.”
And that memory for omegas like them, was undoubtedly an ominous presence.
The man hugged his shoulder and said, “They won’t have the chance to do that again.”
“However, there are still many human traffickers in this world.”
They were recklessly roaming through the interstellar.
The vastness of the universe became their protective shield.
“But there are also people who never give up.” the man said.
The two of them locked eyes for a moment.
Yu Lan suddenly said, “I love you, Mr. Shao.”
Shao Mingyu was slightly startled.
“I love you, Brother Shao.” In the deep blue eyes of the youth, there was only the reflection of the man’s figure.
Shao Mingyu’s gaze deepened and his breath grew heavier. He lifted Yu Lan’s chin and gave him a kiss on the lips, his voice husky, “I love you too, Ah Lan.”
……
After they set off, Yu Lan also managed to pull himself together completely.
Mr. Shao said that he and his mother used to live on a planet in the Second Class Star.
During summer vacation when Mr. Shao was ten years old, he stayed at his maternal grandfather’s house on that planet. As a result he met Yu Lan at the amusement park.
Yu Lan made an effort to recall that day sixteen years ago and looked at the man curiously.
The man raised an eyebrow, “What are you looking at?”
“Mr. Shao, you loved to play when you were a child too!” Yu Lan vaguely remembered that day when he had entered the video game center, holding his mother’s hand. The young Mr. Shao, who was still a boy back then, was engrossed in playing a gaming machine. “There were even two bodyguards with you that day, right?”
“Are you remembering more and more?” The man lightly chuckled and ruffled his hair.
“Mr. Shao, you’re completely different now from when you were a child!” Yu Lan leaned in close to the man and examined him carefully.
The present Shao Mingyu was mature and composed. Just by looking at his current appearance, it was difficult to imagine that he had a different side when he was a child.
Shao Mingyu was unable to help but chuckle, thought for a moment, and added, “Compared to when you were a child, you haven’t changed much.”
The experience in the hands of the human traffickers had added a touch of darkness to the youth, but it hadn’t completely covered his sunshine and innocence.
As the two of them continued to talk, they found themselves smiling for no apparent reason.
Yu Lan asked, “Mr. Shao, did your elementary school classmates back then know about that side of you?”
“They didn’t know.” The man replied very slowly, “I don’t like showing that side in front of unfamiliar people.”
Yu Lan’s lips curved up, “But I saw that side of Mr. Shao!”
The unruly yet somewhat childish, Mr. Shao.
Shao Mingyu smiled as well.
Shao Mingyu took Yu Lan to the building where he and his mother had once lived.
Sixteen years had passed, and the building, which was already very basic back then, looked even more run-down. It seemed like there were only a few households still living there.
Yu Lan stood outside the building, lost in thought as he counted the floors.
First floor, second floor, third floor, fourth floor……ah, he remembered. He and his mother used to live on the fifth floor, in the unit…the one closest to the east side.
Yu Lan’s gaze settled on the rusted anti-theft bars of the windows.
He vaguely remembered that in the past, countless times when he came home, he would see clothes hanging there to dry.
They went upstairs and entered the apartment to take a look.
One room and two halls, all completely empty. The corners were filled with cobwebs, and it seemed like no one had lived here for a long time.
But Yu Lan could still recall faintly that in the entranceway there used to be a small dolphin plush toy hanging on the wall, which his mother had won from a claw machine. Across from it, there used to be a small beige sofa that was facing the TV.
On the windowsill, there were several pots of his mother’s favorite flowers and plants. Yu Lan used to enjoy letting the little turtle he was raising bask in the sun by the windows.
And……
Shao Mingyu walked over to the wall near the bedroom and said, “There used to be a lot of photos hanging here.”
Yu Lan walked over as well.
“After your mother was hospitalized, I had someone pack up everything here and terminated the lease.” Shao Mingyu whispered, “All of those things are still at the villa now.”
Yu Lan was shocked, “At the villa?”
“Yes.” Shao Mingyu smiled, “They’re stored in a storage room at the back.”
“Mr. Shao……” Yu Lan’s nose started to tingle again.
“Are you turning into a little crybaby?” Shao Mingyu teased, gently flicking Yu Lan’s nose.
Yu Lan whispered, “I really didn’t use to cry so much before.”
“Of course, I know.”
The young Ah Lan back then, even if he fell on the ground, wouldn’t cry. He would just immediately get up, as if nothing had happened, and enthusiastically run towards him, calling out, “Older brother, older brother, let’s play that!”
Thinking back to that summer day, Shao Mingyu’s gaze softened even more.
Yu Lan wandered around his and his mother’s room again, feeling a mix of emotions.
He knew that many of his memories would gradually come back and that he shouldn’t rush it, but he always felt like there was a missing piece in his heart.
He asked, “Mr. Shao, what illness did my mother eventually have?”
Shao Mingyu remained silent for a moment and then said, “…..Cancer, the day I met you both, she was already experiencing symptoms.”
This was something the woman had later confided in him when she was sitting by the bedside, reminiscing after the diagnosis had been confirmed.
During that time, she always felt pain in her lower back and discomfort in her stomach.
That summer day, shortly after parting ways with the young Shao Mingyu, her stomach started hurting again.
She initially thought it was because she had eaten ice cream with the two children. When the symptoms appeared, she broke into a cold sweat, and her head began to spin. After she rushed to the bathroom, she started vomiting.
Before that, she quickly told Yu Lan to wait for her outside the restroom.
But by the time she came out, her child had disappeared without a trace.
Yu Lan listened but was unable to say anything.
It was very difficult to bear, yet he couldn’t even remember what had happened during that brief moment when they were separated.
He clung to Shao Mingyu’s shirt.
Shao Mingyu’s eyes were filled with pity as he gently caressed his face and kissed him.
And when the two of them stood behind the amusement park where they had initially met, it was as if time had turned back to sixteen years ago.
Yu Lan looked at the flowerbed not far away, and he could almost imagine the figure of his mother, dressed in a long dress, sitting there in a daze.
And he stood there for a long time, gazing at the woman on the other side of the river of time.
What would they have become, him and his mother, if it weren’t for the human traffickers?
His mother was a model, though not a well-known one. She had come from a Third Class Star to a Second Class Star in pursuit of her dreams but unfortunately, realizing her dreams was incredibly challenging. After giving birth to Yu Lan, her work opportunities became even scarcer.
However if Yu Lan hadn’t been abducted by human traffickers, after everything had settled down, would she still have had a chance to fulfill her dreams?
And her illness.
If Yu Lan hadn’t been abducted by human traffickers, would she have realized sooner that she needed to go to the hospital? Would she have been able to wholeheartedly dedicate herself to treatment? With advanced medical technology, would she have survived?
What a pity there were no ‘ifs’.
Finally, at the cemetery, looking at the gravestone and the small photo of the smiling woman in it, Yu Lan wiped away his tears and murmured, “Mr. Shao, I like the path I’m on now. I want to keep going…”
This was the path his mother had also once loved.
Unexpectedly, they were separated for sixteen years but had come together once more.
Yu Lan wanted to keep moving forward, and by doing so, perhaps he could fulfill his mother’s unfinished dreams.
In front of the gravestone, the man held his hand tightly.
……
After returning to the villa, Yu Lan soon underwent a second round of memory recovery treatment.
Uncle Liu and Aunt Jiang now became completely aware of Yu Lan’s situation, and their hearts ached for him.
It was also at this moment that they finally understood what had been stored in the storage room at the back all along, and anxiously wanted to rearrange them.
While it wasn’t particularly messy there, it wasn’t cleaned regularly so some dust had accumulated.
Yu Lan didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, saying there was no need to rush.
He felt that when he had the free time, he could slowly rearrange it himself.
After resting for another two days in the villa and fully recovering, Yu Lan and Fang Pingping went to meet with You Qing and signed the contract.
The next season’s fashion show was a bit far away, but some of the photo shoots were about to begin soon.
After setting a time, You Qing looked at Yu Lan up and down, and said, “I feel like you’re a bit different from the last time we met?”
It was hard to pinpoint the difference, but he could distinctly feel that the youth had undergone some changes.
——Changes that made him even more attractive.
“Yes, it’s just that I’ve become even more determined on this path.”
You Qing blinked his eyes, “Believe me, this path was made for you.”
Others besides You Qing have also noticed the changes in Yu Lan.
“V” magazine hosted a fashion banquet, and the editor-in-chief also invited Yu Lan, who upon seeing him, let out the same sigh of admiration as You Qing.
By a lucky coincidence, the issue of “V” magazine featuring Yu Lan had just been released, and this newcomer in the fashion industry once again sparked strong discussions online. At the event, he also caught the attention of many people.
Today, he was wearing the custom-made suit that Mr. Shao had arranged for a designer to create specifically for him. His hair was combed back, revealing a smooth forehead, highlighting the advantage of his handsome face even more.
It was Yu Lan’s first time trying out this hairstyle, and he felt a bit embarrassed, but Fang Pingping kept saying, “Looks great, very handsome! Stand tall and proud!”
Yu Lan wasn’t particularly good at these kinds of occasions either. He stayed in a corner, sipping alcohol, yet it seemed like no matter where he hid, people’s gazes still followed him.
He also met Wen Qiong by accident. He was still the same as the last time they had met. Smiling, he asked, “Do you really have no interest in the entertainment industry? Your face would definitely be an advantage in the industry.”
Yu Lan didn’t know why Wen Qiong was so persistent. He shook his head, refusing, “I’m sorry, but for now, I want to focus on being a model.”
Wen Qiong shrugged, then suddenly asked, “How are things between you and CEO Shao?”
Yu Lan was caught off guard and hadn’t had a chance to speak yet when a tall man walked over and put his arm around Wen Qiong’s shoulder.
Wen Qiong paused and when he looked at the other person, she revealed a gentle smile.
The other person also lowered their head to look at him and gave him a playful smirk.
The ambiguity between the two of them was apparent to everyone.
Wen Qiong smiled apologetically at Yu Lan, “Sorry, let’s talk next time.” With that, he turned and left with the man.
Yu Lan suddenly remembered that he had mistaken Wen Qiong for a love rival before. However, the last time they met at the restaurant, although he was drunk, he vaguely remembered that Mr. Shao’s attitude towards Wen Qiong had been cold, or perhaps even a bit hostile.
But Wen Qiong seemed to……
“Why does Wen Qiong seem quite interested in you?” Fang Pingping murmured.
Yu Lan knitted his eyebrows.
Fang Pingping also didn’t think too much about it and whispered in Yu Lan’s ear, “Speaking of which, there had always been rumors in the industry that Wen Qiong had a financial backer. Never thought it was him……”
The alpha who had his arm around Wen Qiong earlier?
Yu Lan asked in confusion, “Who was that person?”
Fang Pingping rambled on mentioning he was the CEO of a certain group, a young master from a top-tier wealthy family which was on par with Mr. Shao in terms of wealth……
As Fang Pingping spoke, his emotions grew somewhat complicated.
Compared to Yu Lan, the newcomer, although Wen Qiong was already a top star in the entertainment industry standing at the pinnacle, Fang Pingping always felt that Yu Lan was the luckier one.
Listening to this, Yu Lan also felt somewhat conflicted. He glanced back at Wen Qiong then seeing that it was almost time, he bid the editor-in-chief farewell and left the venue.
Coincidentally, Mr. Shao also happened to be having dinner with a client outside, specifically at this hotel, on the floor above them.
Before the banquet began, Mr. Shao had told him that he should send a message when he was ready.
Yu Lan sent the message when suddenly he heard a nervous voice behind him, “Please wait a moment!”
He instinctively turned around, only to have a bunch of roses thrusted in front of him, startling him and causing him to take a step back.
Some passersby around looked over, and Fang Pingping reacted quickly, immediately standing in front of Yu Lan. The man, however, still desperately tried to squeeze past him, his face turning red as he said, “Flowers, these flowers were just bought by my assistant. Please accept them, and date me, Yu Lan!”
The people at the venue noticed the commotion at the entrance, and Fang Pingping was a bit frantic, shouting to Yu Lan, “You go ahead, you go ahead!”
Yu Lan recognized this man; he seemed to have been at the banquet earlier today. He faintly remembered the man to have been looking at him several times. Nevertheless, he didn’t expect the man to suddenly pull this stunt when he was about to leave. He quickly nodded and turned to escape only to run into Mr. Shao and Assistant Lin coming down the stairs.
Lin Yu was shocked, “Mr. Yu!”
“Mr. Shao! Assistant Lin!” Yu Lan hurried over.
Shao Mingyu narrowed his eyes and glanced at the man holding the roses not far away. His expression darkened slightly and he pulled Yu Lan by the waist towards him.
The man with the roses saw Shao Mingyu’s face and his actions clearly. He was dumbfounded.
Yu Lan nudged Shao Mingyu, “Mr. Shao, let’s go quickly!”
At a distance, the man stared at the other guy with a wooden expression until he nervously withdrew the roses and hid them behind his back. Then, he turned with Yu Lan and left.
Yu Lan still had lingering fears, and when he snapped out of it, he realized something was off with the man’s expression right away, even Assistant Lin’s expression looked rather strange!
Yu Lan tugged at the man’s sleeve and quietly asked, “Mr. Shao, what’s wrong? Are you angry? I don’t even know him, and I didn’t even talk to him!”
There was no need to be so angry.
Just then they happened to reach the car in the underground parking lot.
Lin Yu awkwardly looked at his boss, who didn’t react.
Lin Yu then looked at Yu Lan again, making Yu Lan even more puzzled, as if there were three question marks above his head.
With a sigh, Lin Yu opened the back door for them.
Yu Lan walked over at a loss and stopped in front of the car door.
……In the backseat, there was a super-sized bouquet of red roses, quietly placed there.
Yu Lan: “…….”
