Shen Dai prepared a table of his best dishes and chatted with Liu Xi while they ate. He deliberately avoided talking about the hardships of the past year. Even when Liu Xi asked, there was no point in complaining to anyone. So why make his teacher worry? Instead, he shifted the conversation to his SCI papers, taking the opportunity to ask many questions while his teacher was present.

After dinner, Shen Dai woke Qiu Qiu up. Liu Xi made a video call to Cheng Zimei and the three of them teased the child together. For a moment, it felt like old times.

After Liu Xi left, Shen Dai put Qiu Qiu on the bed to play by himself and went to clean up the dishes.

Just as he finished cleaning, the doorbell rang. Shen Dai, thinking Liu Xi had forgotten something, washed his hands and went to open the door.

The moment the door opened, both men froze.

The fleeting figure of the heir of Xingzhou Group from the news videos was now standing in front of him. He looked thinner, with a faint dark hue around his eye sockets. His once bright eyes had taken on a sombre look. Yet he was still so dazzling, so distinguished. The modest apartment hallway was not a fitting background for him; he shouldn’t be here.

Looking at the man with whom he had shared the most intimate moments, Shen Dai felt a deep sense of estrangement. He had imagined what it would be like to see Qu Moyu again. But he couldn’t figure out how to face him—so it was better not to see him at all.

Qu Moyu also looked at Shen Dai. Shen Dai’s hair had grown a bit, untrimmed and loose. His skin was even paler, his gaze grey and misty, as if covered by an indissoluble fog. He had always been thin and pale. But he used to exude a calm and composed demeanour. The defined bones under his clothes had a perfect balance of strength. It was like a standing bamboo. But now, Shen Dai’s face was marked by unhealthiness. His eyes were filled with fatigue. It was as if he could break with a slight touch.

Qu Moyu felt a heavy blockage in his chest. The anger that had never truly subsided over the past year flared up again. He wanted to ask Shen Dai what he had gained by leaving him and ending up like this. But he restrained himself, keeping his expression calm, “Aren’t you going to invite me in?”

Shen Dai felt his entire chest trembling uncontrollably, with fear, resistance, and anxiety. The negative emotions Qu Moyu had once caused him were all being awakened from the depths of his memory. He thought he would one day face the most dismal aspects of life, but he wasn’t ready yet. He clutched the door frame tightly as if it were his fortress.

To see his teacher, he had let Xiao Die stay at school that night. It was just him and Qiu Qiu at home. How could he let Qu Moyu in?

Seeing Shen Dai’s hesitant expression, Qu Moyu knew he wouldn’t get an invitation. But he didn’t need one; he walked straight in.

As Qu Moyu approached, his tall, strong body seemed to press down like a mountain. Shen Dai stepped back several steps. The door closed in front of him—his fortress had collapsed.

Qu Moyu looked around, “Is this company housing? Did Professor Liu arrange for you to live here?”

“No.”

“Whose shoes and clothes are these?” Qu Moyu glanced at the obviously feminine items. Judging by the size, they didn’t belong to a female alpha. Omegas would rarely have relationships with anyone other than female alphas.

“Housekeeper,” Shen Dai replied casually, his nerves tense. Qiu Qiu was in the bedroom. He hoped that he was asleep. “Mr. Qu, what brings you here?”

Hearing this, Qu Moyu turned around. His eyes narrowed with a flicker of anger. He had spent half a year dealing with overwhelming work while simmering in the resentment of Shen Dai’s sudden departure. Finally, he decided to find Shen Dai. A month ago, he tracked Shen Dai down, sorted out the company affairs, and made up his mind. This trip to Lancheng was for a new project and also for Shen Dai.

“Aren’t you supposed to be transferring jobs? You’re still on sick leave. And then you just up and leave? What’s so great about this place? You left such good conditions in Beijing to come here?”

As Qu Moyu’s voice grew louder, Shen Dai took a sharp breath. He was afraid it would wake Qiu Qiu. He lowered his voice, “Can I transfer?”

“No.”

“I…-”

Qu Moyu took a few steps forward, forcing Shen Dai against the wall. He looked down at Shen Dai. His gaze was intense and commanding, “Come back with me.” His tone was an unquestionable order.

Shen Dai hadn’t felt the pressure of an alpha in a long time, especially from one who had once used pheromone suppression on him. The fear was still imprinted in his memory. He couldn’t lift his heavy head. He could only speak softly, “If I can’t transfer, then I’ll resign.”

Qu Moyu braced himself against the wall, bending slightly to envelop Shen Dai in his shadow. His voice was cold, “You say that again.”

Shen Dai’s breathing started to tremble.

Seeing Shen Dai’s cowering form, Qu Moyu felt a bit of pity, despite his lingering anger. He hadn’t intended to scare Shen Dai. He gently stroked Shen Dai’s soft hair and softened his tone, “Ah Dai, come back with me. Let’s talk it over. I told you before, I will give you a good life. That still holds true.”

Shen Dai remembered how he used to get lost in Qu Moyu’s deceitful gentleness. Now, he only felt his hair standing on end. He didn’t dare to provoke Qu Moyu. Yet he couldn’t think of a way to get through this crisis. To make matters worse, a baby’s cry suddenly came from inside the house.

Qu Moyu turned his head in surprise. Shen Dai pinched his thigh with a strong force, trying to calm himself down. The best way to break through fear was to face it.

Qu Moyu glanced at Shen Dai, then turned and walked towards the bedroom. He pushed open the slightly ajar door and saw a finely carved little alpha sitting in the crib by the bed. The baby stared at him with wide, curious eyes. He also smelled the familiar scent of pheromones in the room—besides Shen Dai’s elegant epiphyllum fragrance, there was another alpha’s scent.

This was clearly Shen Dai’s bedroom. Yet there was the scent of another alpha’s pheromone. Even the child on the bed was covered in that scent! Qu Moyu felt his heart and lungs explode. He glared at Shen Dai with bloodshot eyes. His expression was fierce, scaring Shen Dai so much that his legs went weak.

Jealousy surged through Qu Moyu, destroying his rationality. The suppressed emotions of the past year erupted. The dull pain in his chest made him feel like a beast under attack. He always used offence as his defence. He grabbed Shen Dai by the collar and slammed him against the closet door with a loud bang, causing Qiu Qiu to cry out.

“So quickly you get it on with someone else? And you even had a child together?” Qu Moyu bared his teeth, feeling an overwhelming urge to bite Shen Dai’s neck. He wanted to make him pay for the pain and humiliation.

Shen Dai struggled to breathe under the pressure of Qu Moyu’s pheromones. But his concern for Qiu Qiu outweighed his concern for himself. He held Qu Moyu’s iron-like arm, trembling and pleading, “Don’t do this. The child can’t handle it.”

The pressure of S-class alpha pheromones on an infant was unimaginable. Shen Dai didn’t dare think about it.

Qu Moyu ignored him, grasping Shen Dai’s neck and ripping off the thin pheromone barrier patch. He didn’t smell the scent of another alpha’s mark on Shen Dai. But he had to be sure. The gland still bore the marks of his bite and the incision from when it was cleaned, now turned into an ugly white scar.

It was as if a long-sealed wound had been torn open. The physical pain had long since faded. But the torment of the soul never ceased. All the memories of pain and humiliation rushed back. Shen Dai growled, “Let go of me!”

Despite Shen Dai’s struggle, Qu Moyu pinned his legs with his strong thighs, pressing his nose against Shen Dai’s gland to sniff with all of his might. Finally, he confirmed that his omega hadn’t been marked by anyone else. His itching canines ground against each other, wanting to bite down on the gland forcefully. His possession had been tainted. He wanted to reclaim it!

After struggling several times, Shen Dai lost his strength. Qu Moyu’s accusations and Qiu Qiu’s sharp cries made his head buzz. His concern for Qiu Qiu overpowered everything. During the pregnancy and growth stages, Qiu Qiu hadn’t had an alpha father. He lacked a sense of security and was prone to stress. Shen Dai cried and begged, “Mr. Qu, please.”

Qu Moyu cast a cold glance at the crying Qiu Qiu. He dragged Shen Dai out of the bedroom and slammed the door.

Shen Dai mustered his strength again to break free from Qu Moyu’s control, wanting to comfort Qiu Qiu. But Qu Moyu threw him onto the sofa. His gaze was menacing and terrifying.

Shen Dai gritted his teeth and glared at Qu Moyu. His eyes were filled with uncontainable hatred.

That look pierced every nerve in Qu Moyu’s body. He was stunned, unable to believe that Shen Dai would look at him this way. He desperately tried to control his violent emotions and sat down beside Shen Dai, lowering his head. He pondered for a moment, waiting for his rationality to return and his mind to start working.

In the bedroom, Qiu Qiu continued to cry without stopping. The sound was muffled by the door but still tugged at the hearts of the two adults.

Shen Dai desperately wanted to check on his child. But he didn’t dare to move.

After a long while, Qu Moyu lifted his head. His eyes were bloodshot and veins were bulging on his forehead as if he had reached the limit of his restraint. “I’ve smelled that pheromone before. It’s Bai Xiangwan’s, isn’t it?”

Shen Dai watched Qu Moyu warily.

“Is the child his?” Qu Moyu’s voice trembled uncontrollably. “Or is it mine?” He never imagined he would ask this question with a faint glimmer of hope. It was a child he never wanted or should have had. Shen Dai had aborted the pregnancy a year ago. The doctor had assured him that with the mark removed, the child could not be retained. But from the timing, maybe, just maybe…

“It’s not yours,” Shen Dai said without hesitation. He said it with certainty.

Qiu Qiu was only his child.

Qu Moyu felt as if a piece of his heart had been gouged out. He glared at Shen Dai. His gaze was fierce. “You and Bai Xiangwan are both Liu Xi’s students. You’ve known each other since university. Maybe there was something going on between you two since back then, which is why you asked to transfer to Lancheng. When you were with me, you already planned to run to him.”

Shen Dai replied in a low voice, “Mr. Qu, I’ve done everything you asked for. What more do you want from me?”

Qu Moyu interlaced his fingers, slowly tightening them. He gave a cruel smile. “What do I want? What do you think? Do you think I would want an omega who’s been played with by someone else?”
