ATISIUP Chapter 17

Yesterday, Lin Huanyan and Gu Yinchen had a great conversation about the room’s decoration and furniture arrangement, and she felt like he was her soulmate.

So, this morning, when she woke up and saw Gu Yinchen taking care of the big and small treasures alone, she couldn’t help but feel guilty.

She had left him alone in the living room for over a week without realizing it.

If it were someone else, they would have already gotten bored, but he didn’t complain at all. Instead, without hesitation or disgust, he kept taking care of the two babies, feeding them, and cleaning them up.

On the other hand, she, the owner, had been so busy with decorating her room lately that she had neglected them.

This won’t do, Lin Huanyan thought to herself. Anyway, there’s nothing secretive in this lab, so why not bring him along? She could talk to him and prevent him from getting bored.

Without hesitation, Lin Huanyan asked, “Achen, do you want to come to the lab with me? I see you’ve been staying in the living room, you must be bored.”

Gu Yinchen looked at her with an apologetic gaze, and secretly smiled inside, but on the outside, he asked with concern, “Won’t that interfere with your work?”

“Ah, don’t worry, it’s boring for me to be alone too. You can keep me company. So, what do you think, are you coming?”

Under her expectant gaze, Gu Yinchen nodded.

“Let’s bring Dabao and Xiaobao too. I haven’t spent time with them lately.”

“Alright, I’ll take them.”

Gu Yinchen grabbed the basket with Dabao and Xiaobao in it, and followed Lin Huanyan to the lab.

As they passed by the clock-in machine at the lab entrance, Lin Huanyan pressed her face against it to scan.

While doing so, she complained to Gu Yinchen, “I don’t know who invented this clock-in machine, making researchers clock in on time every morning. Even in such a remote lab, they installed one. It forces me to wake up early and can’t even sleep in.”

“But you’re still more impressive. When I wake up every morning, you’re already up. How do you do it?”

Gu Yinchen smiled as he listened to her complaints. When she asked him about it, he finally responded.

“I’ve been waking up early to study since I was young, and after a while, it became a habit. Now, I just wake up automatically when it’s time.”

“Wow, that must be tough. You’ve had such a heavy study load since you were young.”

This made Lin Huanyan think about her own high school days, waking up earlier than the roosters and going to bed later than the dogs. After three years, her weight stayed in the double digits, dark circles never left, and her hair kept falling out in clumps. When she got to college, she was finally free, and by the end of one semester, her weight had skyrocketed to triple digits.

“I think it’s fine. I’m used to it,” Gu Yinchen replied nonchalantly.

Hearing his casual tone made Lin Huanyan feel even more sorry for him. She thought about his father, who seemed to have become a “stepdad” after remarrying, and felt upset for him. It was understandable that his father forced him to study, thinking it was for his own good. But now that there was someone else, he seemed to have been cast aside, which made her even more heartbroken for him.

Gu Yinchen noticed her suddenly angry expression as she patted her chest and said, “Don’t worry. If you ever have nowhere to go, you can stay here. We can keep each other company.”

Gu Yinchen: ?

His gaze followed Lin Huanyan’s hand to her chest, which was quite… firm.

He quickly shifted his eyes away, agreeing with her words, but inside, he cursed himself. ‘How could I not control myself? I haven’t even won her over yet and I’m already looking.’

He then thought about how far he still had to go.

There was no other choice, she was slow to warm up. He would have to get to know her little by little and gain her trust before he could start showing his feelings.

Lin Huanyan didn’t know that Gu Yinchen had just thought of all this in a split second.

To help him integrate better, she began to give him a detailed introduction of the lab.

“This lab is called the Black Hole Research Lab.”

Lin Huanyan pointed to the black hole above the platform. “See that? That’s the black hole.”

“But the main research isn’t about the black hole itself. We’re actually studying the objects that fall into our world from the other world that the black hole leads to.”

“Previous researchers thought the other world was a low-tech world, only worth studying some low-pollution plants. But no one has ever been able to successfully grow them, so they gave up.”

“I came here because it’s quiet and comfortable, without too many distractions, but I don’t agree with their views.”

When Lin Huanyan spoke about this, her tone became a bit agitated. Anyone would be upset if their birthplace was looked down upon like that.

Furthermore, even though Earth’s technology might not match that of the stars, in many areas, Earth is far superior.

Not to mention the excellent culture of our country, our natural talent for farming, cooking, and our never-give-up spirit, all of which are better than those in the stars.

“I’ve been researching here for a while, and even though their technology is poor, there are still many things worth learning from them. I often come across interesting things. You’ll understand once you get to know it better.”

Gu Yinchen agreed with Lin Huanyan’s view. He had been taught to never underestimate anything, no matter how small or insignificant it seemed.

Throughout history, many great people fell because they underestimated something.

Just like Lin Huanyan said, no matter how backward the other world might seem, it must have its own unique aspects.

“Alright, I’ve told you pretty much everything you need to know. You should have an idea by now. Let’s get to work.”

Lin Huanyan called out to Gu Yinchen, who was still standing on the platform, staring at the black hole.

She had already instructed the robot to bring the packages to the laboratory before she checked in every day, so they could just go in directly now.

After bringing Gu Yinchen back to the laboratory, Lin Huanyan called the robot to take care of the two babies.

The babies were only a few days old and were still in the hair-growing stage. Their black-and-white fur had only grown a short layer, not dense enough yet. Lin Huanyan didn’t dare to move them around and could only leave them in their bed to sleep and eat well, hoping they would grow up quickly.

There were three packages on the shelf today, two smaller ones and one larger one.

Gu Yinchen instinctively went to grab the large one, leaving the smaller ones for Lin Huanyan.

Looking at the packages, Lin Huanyan didn’t start right away. To let Gu Yinchen feel more involved, she asked him, “Which one do you want to open first?”

Gu Yinchen thought for a moment and said, “Let’s open the big one first; it takes up more space.”

“Alright, then we’ll open the big one first.”

Just as Lin Huanyan was about to start, Gu Yinchen took the knife from her hand, “Let me do it. How can I let you do this here? You just sit here and wait.”

With that, he crouched next to the large package that was on the ground because the workbench was too small to fit it.

Even while crouching, his posture was upright, not at all lazy, exuding energy.

His long fingers gripped the small knife and gently sliced through the package.

Once he opened the exterior, Lin Huanyan leaned in to take a look.

The ancient brown wood grain caught her eye—it was a wooden sculpture.

Lin Huanyan tried to lift it, but it was too heavy. Gu Yinchen quickly ran over, supporting it with both hands, easily lifting it up.

Lin Huanyan breathed a sigh of relief. It was good that he was there; otherwise, she and the robot would have had trouble with it.

The sculpture was set upright, revealing a massive mountain peak with a large Buddha statue carved into it. At the foot of the mountain stood a monk in robes, hands clasped, looking up at the Buddha.

Compared to the Buddha statue, the monk was tiny, but his carved eyes showed immense devotion.

At that moment, not just Lin Huanyan, but even Gu Yinchen was deeply moved by the sculpture.

He took a step forward, observing the sculpture more closely, and after a while, he came to an even more astonishing conclusion.

“Yanyan, I noticed that this sculpture is completely hand-carved, incredibly detailed, and the figures are so lifelike, as if they’ve been infused with soul. I can say that even S-level mental strength couldn’t do this.”

Lin Huanyan was also very surprised. She had assumed that the item in the package was something processed by machines, but the impression it gave her didn’t feel like a soulless, mechanical creation. She hesitated.

To her surprise, Gu Yinchen, who had never encountered anything like this, immediately recognized it.

She quickly leaned in to verify it.

However, something on the ground tripped her, causing her to fall straight toward the floor.

Gu Yinchen was fast enough to catch her, but his attention had been caught by the sculpture, and by the time he realized what was happening, it was too late. He could only rush forward and cushion her fall.

An iconic romance scene unfolded.

Lin Huanyan awkwardly got up, while Gu Yinchen covered his neck, where she had accidentally kissed him. The warm and moist feeling made him reluctant to pull away.

Lin Huanyan quickly changed the topic, “Hey, let me see what I tripped over.”

She bent down to search around, and Gu Yinchen could only reluctantly let go and start looking as well.

A strange object caught his eye, and he quickly picked it up.

He also saw a stick-like object nearby. Not knowing why, he lightly tapped it.

A few “clinking” sounds echoed, and it seemed as though something had switched on. Suddenly, a distant, melodious sound came from the previously silent sculpture.

The sound of Buddhist chants echoed, clear and pure. Gu Yinchen felt as though his mental strength was being cleansed, which was incredibly soothing.

Looking at Lin Huanyan beside him, unlike Gu Yinchen’s simple joy, Lin Huanyan, who understood Chinese culture better, was deeply shocked.

Although China’s history had many strange treasures, such as the wine cups that could brew alcohol when filled with water or the legendary He Shi Bi, which were national treasures and things ordinary people could rarely see, now, in the starry era, she had unwrapped something equally extraordinary from a package.

This was truly hard to believe.
