Naturally, it was Amane who had suggested getting the information. At first, Kouki had resisted.

――—If we do that, she’ll be leaking personal information.

――—You’re always so damn righteous, aren’t you? As a rookie detective, what’s your rare advantage? Your lady-killer face and alpha pheromones, right? Use whatever you can.

――—But, that’s basically seduction, isn’t it?

――—So what? It’s a perfectly valid weapon. Besides, it’s not even critical information, and no one will know it came from that girl.

Eventually, Amane had threatened, “Keep whining, and I’ll dissolve our partnership!” and Kouki had reluctantly carried out the task. As a trade-off, he had to give the girl his email address…

Iwaki’s schedule for the day had been packed with meetings, with the final one being a dinner with a business partner. After the dinner, he was supposed to head straight home from the restaurant.

They had tailed Iwaki’s car, staking out at each stop along the way. So far, everything had gone according to schedule, with no deviations or unexpected detours. Given the way Amane had shaken Iwaki by mentioning Shou’s name, they had considered the possibility that Iwaki might take some kind of action. But nothing out of the ordinary had happened so far.

After changing their stakeout location three times, they had finally seen Iwaki and his secretary enter the restaurant where the final meeting was being held. Kouki and Amane had then moved ahead to Iwaki’s house. They had obtained his home address by accessing the police database.

The plan was to ambush Iwaki when he returned home and confront him for another voluntary interview.

Suddenly, Amane pulled the unlit cigarette from his lips. He threw it into the dashboard ashtray with a thud and said, “Change of plan.”

“We’re going.”

Surprised by the abrupt change, Kouki asked, “Going? Where to?”

“Iwaki hasn’t returned yet.”

“I can see that. But listen, if we ambush him here and he denies knowing anything about Shou, we’re done. He knows the police are watching him over Shou’s case. If there’s any physical evidence connecting him to Shou in his house, he might try to destroy it before the night is over.”

“Physical evidence?”

“Emails exchanged with Shou on his home computer or photos of the two of them together. We’re going to sneak into his house now and find them before he comes back.”

“Sneak into his house…? You’re seriously planning to ambush him!?”

Kouki couldn’t help raising his voice.

“If we get caught, he’ll call the police for trespassing!”

“We are the police.”

“That’s true, but… You really are a crazy guy.”

Kouki had always known Amane was unconventional. But this was beyond extreme.

As Kouki held his head in his hands, Amane thrust his smartphone screen in front of him.

“Look at this.”

Kouki took the phone and stared at the diagram on the screen.

“What is this?”

“The layout of Iwaki’s mansion.”

“How did you even get this?”

“I bought it from Crow. I sent him the address earlier, and he downloaded the layout from an underground site.”

It seemed Amane had been fiddling with his phone to communicate with Crow. While they had been waiting for Iwaki to return to the car over the past two hours, Amane had been preparing and thinking of a different approach.

Kouki felt a bit down, realising the difference between himself, who had been wallowing in idle thoughts, and Amane, who had been productive the entire time. The Squad Commander’s endorsement of Amane wasn’t for show. His methods were reckless, but there was no denying his skill as a detective.

“The corner room on the second floor is Iwaki’s private room.”

Amane pointed to a room located at the corner of the second floor.

“Once we’re inside the mansion, that’s where we’re headed.”

“Even if Iwaki isn’t home, aren’t there likely to be family members or servants inside?”

“Iwaki has a wife and one child. The child graduated from high school and went abroad for studies last year. After that, his wife, with whom he had been estranged for a long time, left the mansion. They’ve been living separately ever since. So, there’s no family in the house right now.”

“That’s also Crow’s intel?”

“Yeah. But it’s still possible that there are live-in staff or security personnel. It’s a mansion of this size, after all.”

If that were the case, getting to Iwaki’s private room without being noticed by the staff would be no easy task. Considering the risk of getting caught, it was a dangerous gamble.

“……”

As Kouki fell silent, Amane, perhaps sensing his hesitation, said, “Iwaki’s guilty.”

“I know it. That bastard killed Shou.”

Kouki was stunned by Amane’s bold statement, as detectives were supposed to avoid jumping to conclusions. He muttered, “Honjou-san…”

“I’m going to confront him with the evidence and make him confess.”

Glaring at the towering iron gate of the mansion, Amane muttered in a low voice.

As Kouki watched Amane’s determined profile, a voice of reason echoed in his mind.

Don’t get involved any deeper. You won’t be able to turn back.

But wasn’t your dream to become a detective like ‘that person’?

A forceful, dirty, and risky investigation—this was the complete opposite of Kouki’s ideal.

Yet, Amane’s actions were likely driven by the same desire Kouki had: to avenge Shou. Though their methods were different, Amane had his own sense of justice that guided him.

In that regard, he was just like ‘that person’.

There was no real advantage to taking such dangerous risks. Solving the case of a Stray Omega wouldn’t earn them any recognition. Amane knew that very well.

Even so, he couldn’t stay silent. He couldn’t turn a blind eye to it, no matter what.

“It’s fine, you know?”

Perhaps irritated by Kouki’s lack of response, Amane’s voice grew impatient.

“This isn’t an official investigation. If you’re afraid of the penalties, you can stay here…”

“I’ll go with you.”

Kouki spoke, cutting him off mid-sentence. Amane froze for a moment, clearly surprised, then slowly opened his narrow eyes wide.

“…Are you sure?”

In response to Amane’s unexpected question, Kouki nodded firmly.

“We’re partners, after all. Come on. Let’s go.”

“This way.”

Kouki and Amane got out of the car, moving along the stone wall to the back of the mansion.

Iwaki’s mansion was surrounded by a stone wall about three metres high, with an iron fence over a metre tall on top. The tips of the fence were spear-shaped to prevent intruders.

Amane, who had been checking the direction of the surveillance cameras attached to the iron fence, slapped the stone wall with his palm, saying, “The camera doesn’t cover this spot.”

“Hey, be my step.”

Following the order, Kouki knelt on the ground. Amane used his shoulder as a stepping stone. He stretched his hands out, grabbed the fence, and pulled himself up with his arms, placing his foot on the stone wall and climbing up. Once standing on the wall, he took off his mod coat and draped it over the sharp tips of the fence. He then crossed the fence, now covered by the coat, and entered the premises. “Come on,” he called to Kouki.

Kouki also climbed the stone wall, using the protrusions and gaps to hook his fingers and toes, like rock climbing. He stood on top of the wall and easily crossed the fence, still covered by the mod coat.

“Alright.”

Amane grabbed the coat, put it back on, and said, “Let’s go.”
