Amane jumped to a nearby tree, using the trunk to descend into the backyard. Kouki followed. From the backyard, they observed the Western-style mansion. It was a two-story building with sparse lights shining from some of the windows. It seemed there were people inside.

They moved from one shadow to another among the trees, slowly approaching the building.

“That door is the back entrance,” Kouki pointed to the door illuminated by an orange nightlight. The layout Crow had sent to Amane was already imprinted in his mind.

They tiptoed towards the back door, careful not to make any noise. Kouki tried the doorknob, but as expected, it was locked.

“Shall we break it?”

“If we break it, the alarm will go off.”

Amane responded immediately to Kouki’s question, pulling a folding army knife from his coat pocket. He unfolded a multi-hook tool with a hook-shaped tip and inserted it into the keyhole of the door.

Amane’s fingers moved the tool delicately, feeling around the inside of the keyhole since he couldn’t see it. After a moment, there was a soft click.

“Got it.”

He pulled the tool out, folded it back, and returned it to his pocket. He grabbed the doorknob again and easily opened the door.

“…That’s impressive.”

Kouki couldn’t help but voice his admiration. But Amane shrugged it off as nothing. “It’s just simple lock picking.”

“There are people inside. Be careful not to make a sound.”

“Yes.”

They opened the door and entered the mansion through the back entrance. The hallway, illuminated by evenly spaced wall lamps, was deathly silent. Thankfully, there was no sign of anyone around.

“First, we head for the stairs.”

The only way to the second floor was the grand staircase located in the centre of the mansion. Kouki said, “I’ve memorised the layout, so I’ll go first.”

“You memorised the whole thing?”

“I did.”

This time, Kouki responded as if it were nothing special.

Taking the lead, Kouki moved through the mansion, matching his mental map of the layout, until they reached the grand staircase in the open atrium. So far, there had been no signs of anyone—but they couldn’t let their guard down.

He reminded himself of this as they began to ascend the staircase. The stairs led straight to a wall midway, then angled upward along the wall. Amane followed a short distance behind Kouki.

Just as they reached the second floor, they were suddenly hit by a blinding light.

“…!”

The intensity of the light made Kouki turn his face away.

“Who’s there?”

A voice echoed out, demanding identification. Through squinted eyes, Kouki saw the silhouette of a figure. As his vision gradually returned, Kouki recognized a security guard in uniform, holding a flashlight, sprinting toward them at full speed.

“Intruders! Intruders spotted!”

Behind him, Amane clicked his tongue in frustration.

What now? Do they fight or run?

“Run!”

Without a second thought, Amane spun around and dashed back down the stairs. Kouki followed. But as they reached the landing midway, the sound of hurried footsteps came from below, and another guard appeared in the hall on the first floor. The newcomer began bounding up the stairs two steps at a time, creating a pincer movement with the guard descending from above.

“Catch them!”

“Damn it, out of the way!”

“Don’t let them escape!”

In the chaos of the two-on-two scuffle, one of the guards struck Amane with a baton, causing him to lose his footing and tumble down the stairs.

“Whoa—!”

Amane rolled all the way to the first floor. The force of his fall sent him sprawling across the floor, where he finally landed face down.

“Honjou-san!”

As Kouki tried to rush to his side, a security guard grabbed him from behind, pinning him with a baton around his neck. Kouki struggled. But the guard, clearly a professional, held him tightly, making it impossible to break free.

“Don’t move! Stay still!”

“…Tch!”

Meanwhile, the other guard hurried down to the first floor and barked at the fallen Amane, “Get up!” A chill ran through Kouki—Amane wasn’t moving.

Had he hit his head hard?

Amane, an omega, was naturally not as sturdy as Kouki, an alpha.

“Stand up!”

The guard grabbed Amane’s arm and roughly pulled him to his feet. As Amane was dragged upright, he cursed, “Damn it, you brute!”

Seeing Amane still able to throw insults as he was being restrained eased Kouki’s worry. It seemed he hadn’t suffered any serious injury.

But Kouki quickly realised now was no time to feel relieved. In fact, this was the worst possible scenario.

Dreading what lay ahead, Kouki cast a weary glance at Amane, who had also been captured.

“Who are you two?”

Dragged by the two guards, Amane and Kouki were taken to a plain, unfurnished room on the first floor. Apart from the row of lockers along the wall, the only furniture in the room was a narrow table against the wall and three folding chairs. It seemed to be some sort of employee break room.

With their wrists and ankles tied with rope, Kouki and Amane lay side by side on the floor, completely immobilised.

“Are you burglars? Home invaders?”

The older of the two guards, presumably the superior, stood by Kouki’s head. He looked down at his upturned face as he interrogated them.

“How did you get inside?”

“…”

Since Amane remained silent, Kouki followed his lead and kept his mouth shut. This prompted the younger guard, standing slightly behind his superior, to snap in frustration, “Let’s call the police.”

“Hold on a second.”

At this, Amane finally spoke up.

“We’ll explain why we’re here directly to Mr. Iwaki.”

Hearing their employer’s name, both guards widened their eyes in surprise.

“Wouldn’t it be embarrassing for you if burglars managed to sneak in and it turned into a police case? What’s the point of paying good money for security if that happens? Wouldn’t it be better to take credit for catching us and presenting us to your employer?”

Amane’s words seemed to get through to the guards, who exchanged glances.

The older guard, after a moment of contemplation, glanced down at his wristwatch.

“Iwaki-san should be returning home soon. Until then, you stay here and keep an eye on them. I’ll go investigate their entry point.”

After giving these instructions to his subordinate, the older guard left the room. The younger guard remained, standing in front of the door with his baton in hand. Kouki felt a growing sense of dread, knowing that if Iwaki arrived and saw them in this state, it would surely cause a massive scandal involving both the local police station and even higher authorities. Feeling desperate, Kouki whispered in a low, hushed voice to Amane beside him.

“What do we do now?”

“We’ve got no choice… Time to use my secret weapon.”

“Secret weapon?”

Kouki furrowed his brow at the ominous words. He had a bad feeling about this.

“What are you planning—?”

Before Kouki could finish, Amane suddenly sat up, using his abdominal muscles to pull himself upright with a grunt.

“Hey! Don’t try anything!”

The security guard, noticing Amane’s movement, quickly approached. He pressed the baton against Amane’s back. Just then, Amane turned his head slightly and looked up at the guard from below.

“…!”

Kouki noticed the guard gasp audibly. Even Kouki’s own skin prickled with goosebumps.

(What’s happening?)
