Gu Zhifei had just finished his advanced math class. He put on his headphones, listening to music as he made his way to the cafeteria. Halfway there, a guy appeared in front of him, seemingly over 1.8 meters tall, his head down, absorbed in his phone, about to bump right into him.
Gu Zhifei frowned and was about to step aside, but the guy lifted his head, revealing a face that, except for a slightly reddened corner of his eyes, fit all of Gu Zhifei’s preferences.
Gu Zhifei quietly withdrew his foot that had been ready to step away and, in fact, deliberately shifted his position a bit, allowing the oblivious guy to walk right into him.
The guy snapped back to reality and quickly apologized, “Sorry, sorry…” He said this while preparing to step around and leave.
Gu Zhifei grabbed him by the arm. “Hey, don’t walk while playing on your phone.”
The guy mumbled in agreement, “Yes, yes.”
Gu Zhifei took off his headphones and said, “My headphones aren’t working now.”
The guy froze. “Huh? Did I break them?”
Gu Zhifei gave him a sidelong glance. “What do you think?”
The guy, seemingly quite honest, didn’t even check if the headphones were really broken. Hearing this, he responded, “I’ll compensate you. How much?”
“No need,” Gu Zhifei replied. “I’ll get them fixed, just cover the repair costs. Give me your phone number.”
The guy didn’t suspect anything. “Oh, okay.” He obediently gave his number.
“And your student ID and name,” Gu Zhifei added. “In case you don’t pay up, I need to find you.”
The guy mumbled quietly, “I’m not that kind of person.” But he still gave his student ID and name.
Jiang Yang. Gu Zhifei silently repeated the name in his mind, then left with a serious expression.
By the time he reached the cafeteria entrance, Yao Qing had been waiting for a while. “Gu Zhifei, over here!”
Gu Zhifei asked, “Is everyone here?”
“Just waiting on you,” Yao Qing said, leading him through the crowd to a corner table where several others were sitting. They were all high school friends, visiting their university after completing their military training.
Yao Qing, a bit jealous, complained, “Why is it that only our university goes straight into classes after military training?”
Fang Shucheng asked, “Class rep, how many classes have you started?”
“Advanced math, English, and Ideological and Moral Education,” Yao Qing replied. “Gu Zhifei just came from his math class.”
Gu Zhifei nodded. “On the way here, I bumped into a handsome guy.” It wasn’t a secret among their little group that Gu Zhifei was gay. Especially since four of them were openly gay—Fang Shucheng and Wei Jie were a couple, and so were Zhuang Yi and Xie Jun.
Yao Qing nudged him, “Did you get his number?”
“More than that,” Gu Zhifei calmly adjusted his glasses. “I got his name, phone number, and student ID. Yao Qing, aren’t you in the student council? Can you check his info for me this afternoon?”
Yao Qing was initially shocked, but then solemnly refused, “We have rules in the student council. We can’t just check people’s info without reason.”
Gu Zhifei thought for a moment. “I’ll cover your snacks for the month.”
Yao Qing instantly reconsidered, “But we can make an exception for the rich.”
Fang Shucheng glanced at Gu Zhifei, hesitating as if he wanted to say something but wasn’t sure how.
Gu Zhifei thought it over. “I’m just going to take a look at his info. I won’t do anything to him.” Yeah, right.
Wei Jie awkwardly smiled, “I don’t think that’s what Xiao Cheng meant.”
Gu Zhifei: “?”
Fang Shucheng pulled out a small, pink notebook. “I’ll give this to you.”
Gu Zhifei, confused, asked, “What’s this?” He took it and flipped through it. It was blank.
Fang Shucheng explained, “I just bought it. I was going to use it to write my upcoming plans.”
Gu Zhifei still didn’t get it. “So why are you giving it to me?”
By then, Wei Jie was already laughing hysterically.
Fang Shucheng, a little embarrassed, said, “You can use it to write your plans for chasing a boyfriend.”
Gu Zhifei: “…”
Feeling conflicted, he put the notebook away. He hadn’t expected this side of Fang Shucheng, the top student.
Wei Jie chimed in, spilling the beans, “Back then, Xiao Cheng even wrote a dating plan that said no kissing for five weeks. It almost killed me.”
Gu Zhifei gave Wei Jie a sympathetic glance, “You okay?”
Wei Jie stroked his chin, chuckling mischievously, “That’s old news. Ever since graduation, once Xiao Cheng turned 18, I haven’t had to hold back anymore… Ow, Xiao Cheng, take it easy!”
Fang Shucheng elbowed Wei Jie sharply.
Gu Zhifei commented coldly, “Serves you right.”
Wei Jie shamelessly said, “The more Xiao Cheng hits me, the more I know he loves me. And the happier I am.”
In response to his request, Fang Shucheng clamped a hand over his mouth and gave him a good beating.
Yao Qing, full of gossip, turned to Zhuang Yi, “Wei Jie spilled the beans on their relationship. What about you two? Have you guys ‘heh heh heh’ yet?”
The three “heh”s carried a deep and unspoken meaning.
Zhuang Yi paused for a moment, then, with a flash of inspiration, looked innocently at their class rep and asked, “What does ‘heh heh heh’ mean?”
Yao Qing grinned mischievously. “You know, that thing.”
Zhuang Yi kept up the act, “What thing?”
Yao Qing laughed even more sleazily, “You know, the ‘bang bang bang’ thing.”
Zhuang Yi persisted with his clueless persona, but Gu Zhifei, another single dog at the table, couldn’t stand the act anymore. Calmly, he explained, “It means having s- e-x.”
Yao Qing: “!”
Zhuang Yi was instantly flustered, with pink spreading from his ears all the way to his neck. In a blink, a freshly blushing Zhuang Yi had emerged.
Xie Jun silently bought a carton of yogurt and handed it to Zhuang Yi.
Zhuang Yi bowed his head, pressing the cold yogurt to his cheeks to cool down, too embarrassed to speak. However, the little tuft of hair on the back of his head, which hadn’t been brushed properly, caught everyone’s attention.
Xie Jun took a glance, then another, his expression serious, but his eyes were filled with the thought: “Why is my wife so adorable?”
Gu Zhifei, unwilling to witness more public displays of affection, turned his head away. Meanwhile, Fang Shucheng, who had been punching Wei Jie just moments ago, was now nestled comfortably in Wei Jie’s arms, the two whispering intimately.
Gu Zhifei took a deep breath.
Completely oblivious, Yao Qing cheerfully asked, “What’s for lunch? How come no one cares about something so important?”
Hah.
Gu Zhifei thought coldly. In a life without sex, what’s the point of eating anyway?
