YPWW Chapter 3

Jiang Yang stared at Gu Zhifei for a moment, frozen in place, forgetting to move. It was as if Gu Zhifei had a radar tuned to Jiang Yang, for he suddenly lifted his head, sensing the gaze.

Their eyes met.

Jiang Yang flashed a brilliant smile and quickly strode over, sitting down across from Gu Zhifei. “Have you been waiting long? Sorry about that. Let me buy you a coffee?”

Gu Zhifei was caught off guard for a second, feeling a sudden warmth in his nose. He lowered his head, pretending to wipe his nose, and glanced at the tissue to check for blood. Seeing none, he relaxed.

To be honest, Jiang Yang was really handsome.

Gu Zhifei replied, “No need. Let me treat you.” He waved his campus card. “What would you like to drink?”

Jiang Yang said, “A latte, no sugar.”

Gu Zhifei nodded, got up, and ordered a latte and a hot milk.

When Gu Zhifei began tearing open a sugar packet, Jiang Yang chuckled, “Do you have a sweet tooth?”

Gu Zhifei shook his head and pushed the sugar packet towards Jiang Yang. “A latte without sugar is really bitter.”

Jiang Yang hesitated for a moment, not accepting the sugar, and after a brief pause, he smiled casually. “How much was the repair fee for your headphones? I can pay you now.”

Gu Zhifei calmly withdrew his hand with the sugar packet and placed it next to his glass of milk. Leaning back on the sofa, he tilted his head slightly and asked, “What if I told you my headphones weren’t actually broken? Would you be mad?”

Jiang Yang looked at him, confused.

Gu Zhifei quietly observed his expression—if this didn’t go well, he’d have to bail.

“I just wanted to buy you a coffee and get to know you.”

Jiang Yang took a moment to process this and asked hesitantly, “Are you messing with me?”

Gu Zhifei relaxed and stopped thinking about leaving. “Why would I? Do I look like that kind of person?”

He gazed innocently at Jiang Yang, thinking to himself, I just want to flirt with you, that’s all.

Jiang Yang, looking into his bright (enhanced by colored contacts) big (again, thanks to the contacts) eyes, subconsciously shook his head.

As they spoke, the bell at the café’s entrance jingled, and a large group of people bustled in, filling the room with noise. They ordered over ten drinks and took the central seats, chattering loudly about someone’s birthday party. The café quickly became lively.

Gu Zhifei glanced at the group out of reflex, then turned back and noticed that Jiang Yang’s expression had shifted. His face clearly showed a sense of disappointment.

Gu Zhifei absentmindedly reached up to adjust his glasses—only to remember halfway that he wasn’t wearing any today. Luckily, Jiang Yang seemed too lost in thought to notice.

After Jiang Yang finished his bitter coffee, still looking distracted, Gu Zhifei downed his milk and said, “Honestly, I’m not in a great mood today. I was hoping someone would take a walk with me.” He nodded towards the door. “Care to join me?”

Jiang Yang put down his coffee cup, which he had been gripping tightly, and forced a smile. “Oh, sure, sure.”

Just as the two were about to leave, a chubby guy from the noisy group suddenly rushed out and bumped into Gu Zhifei, knocking him back.

The guy didn’t even bother apologizing. When he looked up and saw Jiang Yang, he grinned. “Hey, isn’t this the fool who confessed to Xin Xin the other day? It’s her birthday today, want to come join us?” He walked back, kicking the chair of a guy with blonde hair. “Look who I found!”

The group all turned to look at Jiang Yang and burst into laughter, which was anything but friendly.

From their conversations, Gu Zhifei quickly pieced together the story: Xin Xin, the blonde guy’s girlfriend, had lost a game of Truth or Dare a few days ago. As a dare, right in the middle of their advanced math class, she stood up and yelled three times, “Jiang Yang, you’re so handsome!”

Jiang Yang, not knowing the backstory, had apparently confessed to Xin Xin the next day.

Jiang Yang clenched his fists and took a step forward, trying to explain, “I didn’t confess. I just wanted to ask for clarification.”

The chubby guy sneered. “If you didn’t confess, why was your face so red?”

Gu Zhifei smoothly interjected, “Didn’t you learn biology in high school? A flushed face happens because the capillaries dilate. Understand?”

The chubby guy was speechless.

He frowned at Gu Zhifei. “Who are you? What’s this got to do with you?”

Gu Zhifei, his gaze still icy even with colored contacts, responded, “Me? Just an innocent bystander who survived being hit by a human cannonball with 1,000 joules of force.”

Chubby guy: “?”

Someone from the group quietly reminded him, “You bumped into him just now.”

Chubby guy: “What’s 1,000 joules supposed to mean?”

“It probably means you’re overweight…”

Chubby guy: “…”

Infuriated, the chubby guy looked like he was about to roll up his sleeves and charge forward. Jiang Yang was ready to step in, but Gu Zhifei calmly said, “Hey, I’m from the computer science department.”

The chubby guy immediately froze.

At Z University, the computer science department had a notorious reputation. The first “assignment” given to every freshman was to hack into the school’s administration system.

If you didn’t want your personal embarrassments broadcast across campus, you didn’t mess with the computer science students. This was advice that seniors always passed down to new students.

The blonde guy squinted, pulling out a cigarette. “I’ll remember you.”

“Congrats on the honor.” Gu Zhifei replied nonchalantly, raising his hand. “Boss, someone’s smoking in here. Aren’t you going to handle it?”

The café owner, who was even larger than the chubby guy, turned around at lightning speed. The blonde guy’s hand shook, and his cigarette fell to the ground. Trying to play it cool, he muttered, “I just pulled it out. I wasn’t going to light it.”

The owner walked over with a scowl.

Jiang Yang stared in disbelief.

The group of young troublemakers was equally dumbfounded.

Taking advantage of the distraction, Gu Zhifei grabbed Jiang Yang and pulled him outside. “Still staring? Let’s go, walk with me.”
