DW Chapter 3

“Daily mission completed.”

A familiar notification sound rang in his ears, but Chu Zaizhou didn’t leave just yet.

He was somewhat excited now.

Espers really existed in reality! And so did organizations dealing with supernatural abilities!

Maybe the news about the floating man was true…

He silently criticized the situation in his mind, while casually watching the two people in front of him, waiting for them to speak.

Although he knew nothing about the espers in reality, it didn’t matter—he would bluff his way through!

Chu Zaizhou quickly weighed the pros and cons in his mind, his brain, originally tired from staying up late, becoming increasingly clear.

After a brief silence, Yu Tianhe’s calm and husky voice broke the quiet.

“I am Yu Tianhe, captain of the special operations team from the Special Events Management Bureau of Baisha City, and this is my teammate, Fu Chuan.”

He bowed to Ka Xiu, “Thank you for your assistance!”

The young investigator hurriedly imitated the gesture, bowing deeply, “Th-thank you for saving our lives!”

“First point of information: There’s an official organization.”

The dark-haired young man paused, his words concise, “Ka Xiu.”

This name sounded particularly unfamiliar, not a well-known powerhouse.

Yu Tianhe leveled his tone, probing, “Could you please tell us your esper ID number?”

“…?”

Esper ID number? What’s an esper ID number?

Far away in Wenhai District, Chu Zaizhou’s real body wrote this term on paper, sensing something was off.

From the literal meaning, the number must be issued by a specialized agency, and Yu Tianhe’s immediate inquiry upon meeting implied its wide prevalence.

Chu Zaizhou poked the System, “System, do you know about the esper ID number?”

System: [Please explore on your own.]

Why does this golden finger not handle after-sales!

When you don’t know something, you can’t talk nonsense, Chu Zaizhou had Ka Xiu remain silent.

However, the character’s default idle animation kicked in, and Ka Xiu unconsciously started to show off his knife-flipping skills.

Chu Zaizhou quickly pressed down on him.

But it was a bit too late.

He immediately noticed the slight change in Yu Tianhe and others’ expressions.

The initial gratitude became a bit stiff after his silence, caution spreading from the minutiae, yet forcibly suppressed due to the power gap.

Chu Zaizhou was certain that if his actions had been a bit more pronounced just now, these two would have instantly switched to hostile mode.

It seemed that not having an esper ID number wasn’t as simple as being unregistered.

Of course, given their country’s stringent management, it would be abnormal for espers to roam freely…

“Second point of information: Tense relations between the official agency and unregistered espers.”

The atmosphere turned awkward and cold, the ground covered with a sticky, moist liquid.

Although the supernatural entity had been eliminated, both of them felt unprecedentedly tense.

After the question about his name, the initially friendly atmosphere disappeared completely.

The black-haired young man turned his knife halfway through, his gaze cold and scrutinizing.

The captain’s expression grew even uglier.

It was his first time encountering a wild, unregistered esper who defied official recruitment and didn’t even have an ID.

He knew the benefits for registered espers were good, aside from having to abide by the law and deal with the supernatural, there weren’t many demands.

Still refusing such conditions, he must be up to something!

But he had just saved them.

“I know the situation for unofficial espers is not good, if you have any requests, please feel free to make them, but the ordinary people of Baisha City…”

He stopped mid-sentence, swallowing his own speculations.

A wild esper capable of fighting alone, if he really wanted to do something, they couldn’t stop him.

As the rescued party, such speculation was indeed unethical and might easily provoke him.

“Sorry.” Yu Tianhe bowed his head again, his attitude even more respectful, carrying an apology and nervousness.

Yet the scalpel still flipped nonchalantly at the young man’s fingertips.

The worst scenario had arisen.

Yu Tianhe’s heart sank continuously, thinking, this wild esper didn’t act without purpose.

What would they have to pay for being saved?

Elsewhere, Chu Zaizhou’s real body, in the distant Wenhai District, was furiously writing, analyzing the current situation.

“Third point of information: Unregistered espers are assumed to be severely ill, high-risk elements, shunned by everyone.”

Chu Zaizhou: bitter joy.jpg

If he thought about why 【Ka Xiu】 an alternative character appeared, Chu Zaizhou could come up with a dozen reasons based on his experience, but—

He had thousands of account cards!

Even if they weren’t unlocked now, they would definitely appear in reality eventually.

If the officials discovered so many powerful wild espers suddenly emerging, it would definitely seem suspicious!

Chu Zaizhou didn’t plan to create an uproar, his real body hadn’t discovered any special abilities yet, and the officials might have some way to find him.

Creating an image of being against the world was masochistic.

People live in the world not to suffer.

So, how could he solve this problem once and for all?

How could he make the officials believe and respect him regardless of how many alternative characters he appeared as?

As a game designer, Chu Zaizhou’s mind raced, and he wrote down lines of text on the paper.

Time ticked by.

Yu Tianhe slowed his breathing, the flame barely visible between his fingers.

He was prepared for the negotiations to break down, trying to buy time for his teammates to find a chance to survive.

Nearly two minutes of silence passed, and Ka Xiu’s scalpel slid deftly back into his sleeve.

The young man lowered his gaze, his dense, long eyelashes hiding a fleeting reluctance.

He stuffed his hands in his pockets, seemingly searching for something.

Both men subconsciously tensed, their hearts beating erratically with his movements.

“My notebook…”
Ka Xiu murmured quietly as he walked past them to a wet wooden table.

He first wiped the table surface dry with a handkerchief, then reached into his pocket to pull out items.

Yu Tianhe and Fu Chuan exchanged looks, the latter signaling, “Captain, do we run?”

Yu Tianhe shook his head.

Instead, he took a few steps towards Ka Xiu, handing over a business card with his phone number, behaving very submissively.

The black-haired young man paused, accepting his business card.

Fu Chuan’s throat tightened, his nails subconsciously digging into his palms as he stepped forward, resigned to his fate.

Pens, a bundle of neatly folded handkerchiefs, badges adorned with starry sky patterns, gloves, matches… What else?

Fu Chuan, who had been on high alert, gradually focused his attention on the not-so-bulky pocket—

…How did all these fit in there!

Beside him, Yu Tianhe suppressed the trembling detector in his pocket, his face expressionless but his mind in turmoil.

Compared to Fu Chuan’s shifting focus, Yu Tianhe was very clear.

Among these seemingly ordinary items were magic items!

After the revival of spiritual energy, along with the supernatural and espers, various types of magic items also appeared.

These items could only be made by special ability espers or dropped by defeated supernatural entities.

But supernatural appearances were rare and difficult, and the items collected were few.

To think, their city’s team only had a few items that met detection standards!

The distinctly articulated fingers finally grabbed a tuft of fluffy, and with a “squeak!” a palm-sized black-and-white rabbit confusedly landed on the wooden table.

The rabbit munched on a thin piece of paper, which Ka Xiu then plucked out.

He looked down, trying to make out the blurred writing on the paper.

The dim daylight streaming through the warehouse window fell on the young man’s eyelashes, casting a rare soft hue.

But the next moment, the black-haired young man suddenly looked up, his green eyes flickering with an intense cold light.

A flash of silver appeared in his palm, swiftly racing out the open warehouse door!

Fifty meters away, atop a bungalow roof.

Two men in SWAT uniforms were setting up sniper rifles loaded with spirit bullets, preparing to observe the situation inside the warehouse.

One of them felt his phone vibrate, picking it up to check, “Strange, Captain Yu hasn’t come out yet, why does it show the supernatural fluctuation has disappeared?”

The other replied, “Just watch for now, since our people have surrounded the area, the supernatural can’t escape.”

“Get out of the way!”

The one checking his phone suddenly leaped up, forcefully knocking his companion to the ground.

As he spoke, a cold light flew diagonally upward from below, slicing the muzzle in half.

Then, smoothly grazing by the SWAT officer’s ear, it embedded itself into the wall behind him with a “thud!”

The SWAT officer instinctively raised his hand to touch his ear.

Just a buzz cut, the recently grown stubble had been shaved off.
SWAT: “!!”

Following the direction of the silver flash, Yu Tianhe, with his enhanced vision, clearly saw the silhouette of the teammates coming to support.

His heart suddenly skipped a beat as he watched the nonchalantly withdrawing hand of the black-haired young man, continuing to decipher the note.

“Mr. Ka Xiu!” he breathed more rapidly, urgently saying, “They…!”

—Triggered Ka Xiu’s combat instinct!!

Chu Zaizhou’s heart raced with fear.

He hadn’t even realized it, but his body had already reacted autonomously!

If it hadn’t been for the nick of time, when he shook his fingers, he would have truly become a “Savior” turned “wanted criminal” at the start!

Fortunately, it didn’t affect his script.

Calming his nerves with random thoughts, the young man’s deep green eyes were like a still deep pool, showing no sign of disturbance.

He glanced at Yu Tianhe, his voice still calm, “That’s why I didn’t strike fatally.”

He unusually added a few more words, “I find it hard to refrain from attacking things that I perceive as threats.”

Yu Tianhe was momentarily speechless.

He didn’t know whether to admire Ka Xiu’s crisis awareness or to be thankful for his restraint.

No, rather than crisis awareness, it seemed more like a conditioned reflex developed from living in a perilous environment.

Yu Tianhe analyzed the situation, unable to help but think.

Ka Xiu saved them and didn’t harm the supporting team members—did he really bear no malice toward them?

Then why did he maintain such a strange and detached demeanor?

Yu Tianhe turned to contact the SWAT, blindly instructing them to retreat.

He looked deeply at Ka Xiu again, his tone firm, “Please tell me, what can I do for you?”

The black-haired young man once again ignored his question, just looking at the paper, struggling to decipher it.

“Ah, I remember now.” He murmured almost inaudibly.

If not for Yu Tianhe’s full attention on him, he likely wouldn’t have heard it.

He subconsciously felt surprised, but in the next moment, he saw Ka Xiu straighten up.

The black-haired young man also bowed slightly toward them, elegantly and reservedly.

“Central Institute for Supernatural Abilities, Ka Xiu, sends his regards on behalf of the president.”

After dropping a bombshell on the official espers, Chu Zaizhou made a quick getaway.

Acting tough and then running away is really thrilling.jpg

Worried about other tracking methods from the officials, he planned to have Ka Xiu wander around a bit more before walking back.

After concocting such a huge lie, he needed to clarify the details as soon as possible.

Chu Zaizhou only allocated a fraction of his attention to control the alternative character back home, immersing the rest of his thoughts in the paper.

Reality espers and supernatural levels… esper ID numbers… Special Events Management Bureau of Baisha City… Central Institute for Supernatural Abilities…

The pen swiftly moved across the paper, suddenly jerking, creating a distorted line.

Chu Zaizhou raised his head, his vision clearly split in half.

The rain-soaked black-haired young man, his wet hair clinging to his cheeks, stood in front of a transparent shop window, looking at his reflection in the glass, his green eyes flashing a trace of deep resentment.

“Can you just teleport me back?” he mentally asked his real body, “I really forgot the way home.”
