It was almost dark when Kali informed Shan Ming that the child hadn’t come back. He was about to board the plane after dinner and there was not much time left.
Shan Ming wondered where Shen Changze had gone. He should have been back quickly for only five to six kilometres away. Besides, he was not a playful kid. It just so happened that the training was almost over, so he asked the non-commissioned officers of the pro-guards to lead the team back to the base while he himself walked the mountain road that the child would have taken to go back. He planned to find him.
After walking for a while, the sound of screaming floated into Shan Ming’s ears. The sound was not very loud and faint. But it should have come not from far away. Most people hear screams in this kind of dark forest. And most likely, they heard it wrong. But Shan Ming never doubted his five senses. There must be something going on ahead.
He tossed the roaring mountain bike aside and drew his gun as he walked. He didn’t carry any heavy weapons. He just had a Browning pistol and a sabre he always carried with him. He was so close to the base that he didn’t worry about any danger.
The sun was about to set and the light in the forest was getting darker and darker. He followed the sound. But after walking for a long time, the sound stopped. Without the guidance of the sound, it is easy to be lost based on memory alone. He couldn’t walk in the direction of memory so he observed his surroundings to see whether there were any traces left on the surrounding vegetation.
Although the voice had disappeared, Shan Ming soon found something else that could lead the way.
In the dark woods ahead, there was something emitting a faint golden light. It seemed that there must be someone in that direction. It could perhaps be a flashlight. Although he knew that Falcon and Five Dragon were already lurking nearby looking for Jim’s traces, they would definitely not produce such light. Not under any circumstances. They would already be dead for being such an idiot. So this other party is probably an enemy so he must be more careful.
The closer he got, the more obvious the golden light was. Shan Ming didn’t know how to describe this light. It was not very bright. There was little illumination and it was faintly golden. But it is brightly radiant. The strangest thing is that the lighting equipment is always the brightest in the centre but this light, it was the surroundings becomes darker the farther away from the centre. This group of light seemed to violate this common sense. Its ‘centre’ position is indistinguishable. The area is too large. But with such a large light source, the range of the radiant emitted by the surrounding area should be very small. If you insist on describing it, this group of light is like a mango with a particularly large nucleus.
Shan Ming crawled forward. No matter what it was, if it dared to find trouble at the door of their ‘Peregrine Falcon’, he must not let it go.
After approaching, Shan Ming saw a hand on the grass. He recognized this hand. The hand was very fair, but the fingers were stubby and the nails were messy and ugly. It was Five Dragon’s hand.
His heart sank. He estimated that Five Dragon was dead.
Shan Ming squinted his eyes, aimed at the faint golden light and fired a shot. He originally wanted to knock out the lighting equipment and then hide in the darkness. He would then wait for an opportunity to act. But after the gunshot was fired, there was a burst of angry screams. Then, the ball of golden light moved towards him at a terrifying speed.
Shan Ming was a little dumbfounded. He never thought that the lighting equipment would move.
But when that ball of golden light appeared in front of his eyes, Shan Ming was really stunned.
It’s… no way. It’s some kind of a humanoid animal. Its body is covered with light golden hard scales at a glance. Its scales are half the size of a chicken egg. It is armed up to the neck. And there are two black horns on the top of its head. It was not too long. It has thick, long and sharp claws on both hands and feet. A pale golden fleshy wings were dangling behind its back. And a tail as thick as an arm was swinging back and forth!
The nightmare seven years ago suddenly appeared in front of Shan Ming. The two-metre-long monster that walked upright back then had scales, horns, wings and a tail just like this. But it was grey or black in colour. It also had a human face. It possessed extremely terrifying power and speed. It could tear up those brave mercenaries one by one like pieces of paper. Ordinary bullets couldn’t penetrate the monster’s body. The scales on his body were like a hard armour, blocking most of their attacks. In just a few minutes, seventeen people died before their eyes. They had never been in contact with such a crazy situation. The most terrifying thing in the world was not facing hundred enemies but it was not knowing what you were facing at all.
In the end, his foster father, Lin Qiang, the boss of the ‘Peregrine Falcon’ back then, jumped onto the monster with explosives in his arms for the safety of the few remaining survivors. He died together with the monster.
That incident left an indelible shadow on the survivors of the ‘Peregrine Falcon’, especially Shan Ming who watched his foster father transform from a strong and brave mercenary into a piece of meat in an instant.
Since then, ‘Peregrine Falcon’ has never set foot in China again. Shan Ming never imagined that he would encounter this monster again, right at the door of their mercenary base.
Shan Ming tried his best to overcome his fear of this thing. Bang bang bang! He fired three shots in a row, aiming at the monster’s chest. The monster was knocked back a few steps but then rushed towards him again.
When the monster approached him, Shan Ming saw the face of this short monster for the first time. It was the child picked up by him who slept with him every night for three years, squeezed toothpaste for him in the morning, and brought him footwash water at night. It was his son – Shen Changze.
That long, delicate and immature face was wrapped in abnormal hard scales. His eyes were blood red.
Shan Ming felt that someone had knocked his head hard and his world was full of alarm bells. He finally understood! He finally understood why Tang Tingzhi insisted on getting this child!
Shan Ming was sweating violently. He didn’t know how to describe his current mood. The monster that he had been terrified of for seven years was actually kept as a pet by him on his own couch!
Shen Changze’s movements were extremely fast. When he rushed forward, he bit Shan Ming’s arm that was blocking his neck with a horizontal sabre. His sharp claws directly tried to grab Shan Ming’s head.
That speed shouldn’t be that of an eight year old. It does not even belong to that of a human being!
Shan Ming leaned his neck back vigorously, taking advantage of his height to escape the fate of being pierced by sharp claws. He endured the severe pain. When Shen Changze bit his hand, he loosened the sabre. The sabre changed hands and aimed to slam at Shen Changze’s eyes. But he hesitated when he swung the knife. Even though his eyes were blood red and his expression was crazy, that familiar and immature face was indeed Shen Changze.
In this moment of hesitation, Shen Changze had already knocked off his sabre and his sharp claws still wanted to grab his head.
Shan Ming stretched the muscles of his right arm and gave a violent shock, trying to shake his teeth off of him. If they were human teeth, they would definitely be shaken off. But his movements in front of this monster just let the strength of the teeth sink deeper.
Shan Ming gathered all his strength and kicked Shen Changze’s face bone. Even if this thing is armed with scales, the calf bone is also the thinnest part of the fat pad. Believe it or not, it would definitely hurt!
Sure enough, the blow had an effect. Although he had superhuman strength and speed, the child was far behind Shan Ming in terms of combat skills. The calf bone immediately made him stop and jump back.
Only then did Shan Ming realise that the joint of his right arm was dislocated and it was drooping by his side. Shan Ming didn’t dare to delay so he rolled on the spot, picked up the sabre and then moved to stab his right side.
Shen Changze realised his intention, opened his mouth to reveal a mouthful of sharp teeth, and roared fiercely. It was as if he would bite Shan Ming to death if he caught up.
Shan Ming kicked away his oncoming sharp claws and hit his chest with his hip bone. He then slammed his head with the knife handle.
This time, the skull should be cracked. Shan Ming bet that there is no protection on the head of this thing. Unexpectedly, the child just took a few steps on his hind legs, shook his head, and rushed up even more angrily and fiercely.
Shan Ming could only use the sabre to block him again. But Shen Changze bit the sabre and his sharp claws clasped Shan Ming’s neck like lightning.
Shan Ming’s face turned red immediately after being strangled. The hand that was about to send him to death came from an eight-year-old child and he couldn’t even break the grasp!
He regretted that he had been soft-hearted. If he had stabbed him with the knife just now, he would never have fallen into this situation. He didn’t believe that this thing’s eyes should also be bulletproof.
But… He raised this thing for nothing for three years. If he was stabbed to death with a knife, he would feel miserable.
Damn, this is really his really bad luck!
He opened his mouth and shouted with all his strength, “Shen Changze!”
What he never expected was that the grip on his neck loosened a bit.
Shan Ming saw that there was something going on. So he shouted at the top of his lungs, “Shen Changze! Shen Changze!”
Shen Changze’s blood-red eyes finally slowly flashed a trace of clarity. The moment his consciousness recovered, the first thing he saw was Shan Ming’s bruised face.
He called out a little strangely, “Baba?” Then his vision went dark and he passed out.
The two fell to the ground at the same time. The little monster who was as ferocious as a wild animal just now had his eyes closed and had fainted on top of him. Shan Ming was gasping for breath, looking at the starry sky dotted with stars. He couldn’t recover his senses for a long time.
He slowly stood up and watched as the light of the light golden scales on the child’s body became darker and darker. The strange features of the body faded away little by little and the invulnerable hard scales became delicate skin again. The childish and defenceless face of the person in his arms made it impossible for Shan Ming to connect it with the monster that almost killed him just now. He really suspected that he was hallucinating.
He rubbed the child’s shoulder and it turned out that his arm had been dislocated. He groped for the joint and pressed the child’s arm back with a click. The child let out a low cry and shook his body. But he didn’t wake up.
Shan Ming got up from the ground and scanned the vegetation. He saw Five Dragon on the ground first. He knelt down and touched Five Dragon. His body was already cold. Not far from Five Dragon was the corpse of Jim whose chest had been torn with a big hole. The internal organs were gouged out of his body and dripped all over the floor.
The fire was brightly lit near the base in the distance. Someone must have heard the gunshots just now and wanted to come to check.
Shan Ming found a suppressed rifle from Jim’s side and added a few more shots to Jim’s body. He also scratched it with a sabre a few times to create the illusion that the sabre and the bullets were the ones that made such wounds.
The situation was urgent. But it doesn’t really look convincing. At least, this can’t be hidden from Pell’s eyes. He could only pray that Pell, who has always been disgusted with Jim, doesn’t want to dissect his body.
After doing this, people from the base also came over. Job led the way. Even Kali, who said he was going out to do a mission, followed to watch the excitement.
As soon as they saw the scene, they basically understood what was going on.
Kali saw Shen Changze lying in the grass covered in blood, “Is the child all right?”
“It’s okay. He just fainted from shock.” Shan Ming looked at Shen Changze with gloomy eyes. There were mixed feelings in his heart.
