After more than seven hours of driving across countries, they finally reached the temporary base of their mercenary regiment in Myanmar.
The child slept in Shan Ming’s arms for a long time. When he had enough sleep, he laid his head on the car window and looked outside feeling bored. It was the same natural scenery all along the way. It didn’t look beautiful since this forest was mostly uncared for.
Finally, the car turned into a valley. After passing through a narrow and rugged mountain road, the car suddenly stopped in front of an open flat land. There were many marching tents erected disorderly.
Although it is said to be a temporary base, the entire base is well-equipped. Their client this time is quite rich and has provided them with a lot of good weapons and equipment.
There were guards at the entrance of the base. Even though they saw familiar comrades driving, they still did not take things lightly. They got in the car and checked around before letting them in.
Koski drove the car directly to the centre of the open flat land surrounded by the disordered tents. A dark-skinned man was holding a wine bottle and playing around by standing in front of the car. Koski rolled down the window and laughed loudly, “Dino, look at me running over you and turn you into chocolate sauce.” After speaking, he drove directly in his direction.
Dino laughed too. He didn’t dodge at all. He just moved his lower body to make obscene movements like he was fucking somethings and gave him the middle finger.
The front of the car made a sharp turn just enough to avoid running over Dino and stopped.
Pell frowned and said, “We have an injured person in the car. Don’t be so rude.”
Koski laughed and said, “I think he’s fine. The kid has been lying on him for so long, but he didn’t say he was tired.”
Shan Ming scolded them with a smile: “How many kilograms does he weigh? If that bitch Vera laid on your body all night, I never heard you say you’re tired.”
Job laughed loudly as he patted Shan Ming on the shoulder and said, “Let’s get out of the car. We should hurry up to meet the Boss. He misses you to death.”
Shan Ming limped off of the car. Shen Changze looked at the people of all races who were gradually approaching them. He didn’t see even a single other Asian. The people were all tall and big so the child was very scared. He just wanted to follow Shan Ming closely.
Seeing that Shan Ming had gotten out of the car, he hurried to get off of it too. But the Hummer was too high for him so it was very difficult for him to climb down. In a moment of impatience, he forgot that his legs were short. He tripped in front of the car door and was about to roll out of the car.
He screamed, “Uncle!”
Shan Ming hurriedly turned around and stretched out his hand to grab him. He picked him up by the waist only to feel a burning pain in his own arm. He knew that his wound had reopened.
Pell jumped beside him, “Shan…”
Shan Ming threw the child to the ground, “I know. Baby, give me a new bandage.”
“Shan.” A deep voice sounded from the outer circle of the crowd. The voice sounded somewhat stable and elegant. It was incompatible with the image of the soldiers and ruffians around them.
After hearing this voice, the crowd automatically dispersed, leaving a passage for the owner of that voice to pass through.
A blond-haired, blue-eyed Caucasian man walked over unhurriedly. He looked to be in his twenties, wearing a beige cashmere sweater and iron-grey casual trousers. He was tall, handsome, seeming to own a pleasant personality, and exuded an air of elegance. He looked like he was walking on a red carpet towards a Hollywood star party rather than walking among a bunch of vulgar international exiles.
Shan Ming raised his head and acknowledged him, “Boss.”
That man is the boss of the ‘Peregrine Falcon’ mercenary regiment, Ayer Mauri.
Ayer walked up to him and patted his arm lightly. He sighed, “It’s good that you can come back alive.” After speaking, his eyes fell on Shen Changze who was holding on to Shan Ming’s trouser legs tightly.
Ayer frowned slightly, “Job called me while you were on the way here. Is this the child you brought back?”
Shan Ming nodded, “Yes. I can’t even shake him off of me, you see.” After speaking, he shook his thigh as a gesture. The child immediately hugged his leg tightly and looked at Ayer warily.
Ayer shrugged. “We’re not a charity group. What are you going to do with him?”
Shan Ming was about to open his mouth to answer him but a strange voice came in between them.
“Oh, my God.” A skinny white man pushed through the crowd and squeezed in. His face was as pale as a ghost and there was abnormal evil in his eyes. His eyes stared directly at Shen Changze. It was as if in the next seconds, he would drool in desire. He walked towards Shen Changze while exclaiming, “Why is there a little angel here? Poor little beauty. He looked so thin…”
The child was so frightened that he went straight behind Shan Ming and stuck himself there. His big black eyes were full of fear.
Killing intent rose immediately in Shan Ming’s eyes. He threw away his crutches and pulled out the pistol from Job’s waist. Just as the man’s disgusting bony hand was about to touch Shen Changze, his pistol was already firmly stuck to the man’s crotch.
The man froze immediately and stared at Shan Ming with wide eyes.
Shan Ming had a ferocious expression on his face and also stared back at him fiercely.
“Shan, what do you mean by this?”
Shan Ming said coldly in a voice that everyone could hear as if to announce his possession proudly: “Jim, this kid is mine from now on. If you dare to touch even a single hair of his, I’ll kill you. I’ll cut off your cock and let you eat it yourself.”
Jim’s face changed. There was malice in his eyes. He took a step back and said with a smirk, “Yours? When will you be done with him? And you think I’m disgusting?”
Shan Ming spat on the ground, “Hey, I still think you’re disgusting. Not like that. He’s my son.”
“Son? Hahahaha your son?” Jim held his stomach and laughed loudly, “You hypocritical perverted dog. You’re just as sick as me.”
Shan Ming sneered and said, “It’s not too late for you to take him away from me now. Do you want to have a duel with me?” He returned the gun to Job while displaying a ferocious killing intent on his face, “You can choose the method.”
No one around spoke. The air seemed to freeze.
Jim’s face seemed to be distorted by anger. He gave Shan Ming a harsh look before he turned around and left.
It is an iron-clad rule of the mercenary regiment not to allow internal strife between members. But if two people hate each other to the point that it cannot be resolved, they can have a duel under the witness of all members until one of them dies.
Not only Jim. No one in the mercenary regiment dared to single out against Shan Ming. This young and handsome Asian boy possessed the ability to kill given by the devil.
With an amused look on his face, Ayer jokingly said, “Shan, if it’s a duel, I will definitely bet on you to win.”
Shan Ming looked at Jim’s back leaving like a lost dog and showed a bloodthirsty smile, “You won’t lose your money.”
Ayer crossed his arms and raised his eyebrows, “So… he is your son?”
Shan Ming couldn’t hide his disgust from looking at the child who was trembling with fright, “Although he is much useless compared to me back then, but… so be it.”
Ayer waved his hand and said to the group members who were watching the fun, “Leave us.”
When everyone was gone, Ayer shook his head, “This is different from when your father adopted you. I don’t encourage you to do this.”
Shan Ming patted Ayer on the shoulder, “Boss, my brother in arms, I have already decided to raise him. Our foster father successfully raised us. I think I can also raise a child. It seems to be very fun. This is so that we can carry on the tradition of our mercenary regiment. We can have successors.”
Ayer’s beautiful blue eyes looked deeply at Shan Ming. It was as if he could see through his heart, “Although you always say that we might not have what we have today for tomorrow, you still hope that when you die, you could leave something behind for this world. Isn’t it? Just like how our father died and he left us behind.”
Shan Ming smiled and shook his head. He patted Ayer on the shoulder, “Ayer, don’t think too much into this. I just thought it was fun. Don’t worry, I won’t let him drag us down. If he becomes a burden to our mercenary regiment, I will personally end him.”
Ayer sighed softly while showing an elegant smile, “My wayward brother…”
Pell led Shan Ming into the one-person tent that had been prepared for him and quickly treated his open wound.
After Pell left, only Shan Ming and Shen Changze were left in the tent. They both stared at each other.
The child huddled in a corner and turned his little head to look at the entire tent. It looked as if he was very curious.
Shan Ming knocked on the table, “Pour me a glass of water.”
The child slowly moved over to pour him a glass of water and handed it to him timidly.
The tense atmosphere between Shan Ming and that skinny man just now left a shadow in the child’s heart. Although he couldn’t understand what they were talking about, he always felt that it had something to do with him and it was a very scary matter.
After Shan Ming finished drinking the water, he said to him, “Come here.”
The child came over slowly. He looked up at Shan Ming with his small face and whispered, “Uncle, will you take me home?”
Shan Ming turned cold, “I’ve told you earlier that I won’t take you home. I will only take you to see them when your parents are dead.”
The child understood his sarcasm. He shrank his shoulders in fright.
Shan Ming pinched his chin and stared into his eyes. He said his words clearly one by one: “From here onwards, live as if you have lost your parents and you will never return to them. You will be my son from now on.”
The child’s eyes widened in surprise as he looked at Shan Ming in disbelief.
After saying these words, a strange emotion also rose in Shan Ming’s heart. He suddenly became excited and said with an evil smile: “Let me hear you call me ‘Baba’.”
The child’s lips were trembling. Tears slowly gathered in his eye sockets. He suddenly pushed away Shan Ming’s hand and shouted, “I already have a father. You are not my father! I want to go home. I want my mother!”
Shan Ming slapped him unceremoniously. The child’s immature face immediately swelled up.
Shan Ming displayed a fierce look, “Go home? I had given you a choice back then. You could either stay in that village or follow me. No matter what choices you made, you can’t go home. Because you are too weak so you have no right to be picky .If you don’t want to follow me, just say so. I’ll shoot you and then I can send you home.”
The child’s body trembled. His eyes were red and full of fear and resentment.
Shan Ming sneered and said, “If you want to eat well and dress warmly without being raped by perverts, just follow me. I will teach you how to be able to fill your stomach and how to smash the heads of people who threaten you.”
The child was trembling as his tears streamed down his cheeks slowly.
Seeing that the intimidation had worked, Shan Ming pinched his face again. He showed a nasty smile, “Call me ‘Baba’.”
The child looked at him with teary eyes and refused to say a word.
“Why are you crying? Come on. Call me ‘Baba’. You’re lucky to follow me. You will have a lot of money in the future. You can fuck the most beautiful girl in the world. You can spend a lot of money in Monte Carlo. And you can also wring the neck of the person you hate. It’s much better than dying in the primaeval forest and being gnawed into slime by bugs.”
The child bit his own lips with a look of hatred and fear on his face.
Shan Ming patted his face and spoke threateningly: “Call me ‘Baba’ or I will send you to that pervert just now. That bastard’s cock is thicker than your arm. There are hundreds of ways for him to torture a child like you. Would you like to try it?”
Although the child only half-understood what Shan Ming meant, thinking about the way that skinny white man looked at him just now made him sick and frightened. No matter how scary the person in front of him is, at least they speak the same language. At least, he had saved him. And at least, he can give him food. Weighing his options, the child’s lips moved and finally he whispered unwillingly, “Baba.”
Shan Ming raised his head and laughed loudly, “Okay. I, Shan Ming, picked up a son for nothing.”
The child couldn’t stop crying.
Shan Ming didn’t have any extra sympathy for him. After a whole day of riding in a car, he was a little tired. He took off his coat, shoes and socks. He then threw them at Shen Changze’s feet. “Now, wash the clothes and socks for me. Oh, and these shoes too. The water and the bucket are outside. You can see them when you go out.” After Shan Ming instructed the child, he lay down comfortably on the bed, “When it’s time for dinner, call for me. You can’t eat until you finish your work.”
The child clutched the hem of his clothes tightly. His aggrieved and angry eyes fixed on the back of Shan Ming’s head, wishing to see two holes in it. He just looked at his back for a long time before he sniffed and got up from the ground. He walked out with Shan Ming’s dirty clothes in his arms.

*Translator’s Note: SM made SCZ cry now but SCZ will make SM cry in the future hahaha just you wait! As I said before, I will use ‘Baba’ [爸爸 / Bàba] in my translation for ‘father’ instead of using ‘Dad’ as translated by google. This is because I think it’s more suitable and adorable. By the way, when you learn Chinese, you need to roll your tongue so sometimes ‘B’ sounds like ‘P’ so you can somehow imagine ‘Baba’ sounding like ‘Papa’. Lately, I started reading SQC’s ‘The Return of the Cambrian Period’ again (I was suggested to continue the translation but I’m still considering it at the moment) and found that Dragon Blood is actually in the same universe as that story. I used to read that story until the 30th chapter but had to MTL the rest. There are many chapters so I gave up reading that a long time ago but now that I started to read again, damn! It’s really related. Lol! -K
*GLOSSARY: 爸爸 [Bàba] = Father
