It was fortunate for Julian that the old Count Hachigaya’s family mansion was located in a highland area that was very comfortable even in summer.
The breeze was cool. And the temperature did not rise to the extent that air conditioning was necessary during the day, making it pleasant and bearable.
However, due to his naturally poor ability to interact with others, he still struggled to close the distance between himself and Fujimori, who had kindly come to this mansion alone.
As Julian placed the plate from his finished cake and the cup back on the wagon, the dutiful Fujimori picked up the teaching materials he had set aside.
“No, how about we stop here for today?”
Julian stopped him.
“What about the next hour?”
“You should rest for a bit. You still haven’t been able to contact the professor, right?”
“That is…”
Fujimori looked a bit embarrassed, scratching his head awkwardly.
Julian seemed to know that Fujimori had been quite upset about not being able to contact the professor, which made Fujimori feel uneasy.
“Ah… I’m sorry. Did you overhear me saying something?”
“I didn’t mean to eavesdrop… Besides, I still don’t understand much Japanese…”
“It seems the professor left for Europe rather quickly…”
Fujimori, who had started to say something, quickly corrected himself. “No, I mean-” He was flustered.
“I’m grateful that I’m allowed to stay in this mansion. But if the professor isn’t coming back for a while, I wish he had at least informed me from the beginning…”
He didn’t want it to be misunderstood that he was unwilling to stay. His delicate consideration was pleasant.
“You’re going to finish your report while you’re here, right? The classes can wait until tomorrow.”
Fujimori smiled happily when he told him to spend the rest of the day working on his report.
He then showed him a rough draft of the mansion’s floor plan, which had been expanded and remodelled many times, leaving no accurate layout left.
As a professional, Fujimori looked quite pleased.
Julian didn’t dislike the atmosphere of this mansion, which had a European feel with a hint of an Oriental touch. Fujimori said it was like a treasure box for him. He seemed quite excited, with a blush on his cheeks, thinking that his report might be the first investigation of its kind.
“Then, please put it all together today. Tonight’s dinner will be pot-au-feu made with salted pork.”
When Frau Gessner told them earlier about Forst’s specialty dish, Fujimori, who had said he wanted to eat something warm before bed, smiled happily.
The taste is rich. Although it looks plain, the salted pork marinated with Forst’s original spice blend is exquisite.
“I’ll see you again at dinner time.”
Julian pushed the cart and stepped into the hallway.
As he continued to push the cart along the corridor, a grey-furred cat began to twine around his feet.
“Meow.”
Julian bent down and gently stroked the cat from its small head down to its chin.
“It seems like the swelling has gone down quite a bit. Maybe by tomorrow, it’ll be okay to end your rest.”
The grey house cat simply narrowed its blue eyes.
