Fang Shucheng was at home packing for the trip, while Mom Fang and Dad Fang hovered nearby, making things more difficult.
“Bring a jacket, will you?” Mom Fang said. “It gets chilly at night.”
Fang Shucheng’s suitcase was already full. He glanced at the leather jacket in her hands, his head spinning. “It’s July in Jiangnan. How is it going to be cold?”
Mom Fang insisted, “It’s better to be overprepared than underprepared.”
“There’s no room for it. How about you two just relax? I can handle packing on my own,” Fang Shucheng pleaded.
“Make sure you and Wei Jie take care of each other. Don’t go bullying him, got it?” Mom Fang added.
Dad Fang gave her a complicated look. “Honey, don’t you think you’re overthinking this?”
Mom Fang spoke without thinking, “Why would I? Last time, I saw your son on top of Wei Jie, practically eating him alive.”
Both Fang father and son: “…”
Dad Fang’s expression grew even more conflicted.
Fang Shucheng’s heart pounded. “Mom, what nonsense are you talking about?”
Mom Fang pouted, “I didn’t say anything.”
Fang Shucheng: “…”
Dad Fang sighed, “You already slipped up. No point trying to take it back now.”
Embarrassed, Mom Fang mumbled, “So, you noticed too, huh?”
Dad Fang nodded, “I didn’t see anything firsthand, but last time I passed by the alley, I overheard enough.” The two boys had been so affectionate it made even him blush.
Fang Shucheng: “…”
Even after boarding the high-speed train, Fang Shucheng was still reeling from the shock.
Wei Jie, always calm, wrapped his arms around him and reassured, “Don’t worry about it. Your parents get it, so no big deal.”
Fang Shucheng sighed, “My mom said she noticed something as early as middle school. She even said she knew why I didn’t go to the provincial high school.”
Wei Jie’s heart melted, and he gazed at Fang Shucheng tenderly.
“She’s thinking too much. Back in ninth grade, you were barely 1.65 meters tall, still just a kid,” Fang Shucheng added, shaking his head.
Wei Jie: “…”
He had shot up in height during the summer after ninth grade. By the time his first year of high school ended, he had reached 1.90 meters.
“What, so you like me for my looks or my personality?” Wei Jie asked, half-joking.
Without hesitation, Fang Shucheng replied, “Obviously your looks.”
Wei Jie: “…” Damn it.
He grabbed Fang Shucheng and playfully swatted him on the butt.
Soon after, Fang Shucheng curled up in Wei Jie’s arms as they gazed at the fleeting scenery outside the train. Everyone around them had their eyes closed, resting, and no one paid any attention to the two of them.
Truth be told, the view along the railway wasn’t all that special, but doing nothing but watching the scenery with the right person was never boring.
Even the light vibrations of the train felt comforting. They leaned into each other, quietly listening to the rhythm of each other’s heartbeats.
“If only we could stay like this forever,” Fang Shucheng murmured.
Wei Jie kissed the crown of his head. “Yeah.”
Fang Shucheng pulled out his small notebook, flipping to the page with their relationship plan. He scribbled a note: We will always be together.
Wei Jie felt a wave of warmth and love wash over him. He kissed Fang Shucheng’s cheek and echoed softly, “Always.”
The high-speed train carried them forward, into the future—wide open and full of possibilities.
