Meng Jin and Zhao Yunzhi crouched in the greenbelt, their eyes locked on He Saibing’s window, waiting for Liu Er to go upstairs before making their move.
Zhao Yunzhi kept an eye on the stairwell window, watching the voice-activated lights flick on, signaling Liu Er’s location.
Suddenly, the lights in He Saibing’s room went out, followed by a shadow at the window and a piercing scream.
“Help!”
Meng Jin was the first to dash out, Zhao Yunzhi right behind him, taking three steps at a time as they charged up the stairs.
When they reached the sixth floor, an eerie silence greeted them. The door was shut tight. Meng Jin pressed his ear against it, but there wasn’t a sound.
Could He Saibing have already been killed?
Taking turns, Meng Jin and Zhao Yunzhi kicked the door. The old door, worn out over time, gave way after a few kicks.
The room was pitch black. Zhao Yunzhi flicked on the light, and they were stunned by the sight before them: two people lay on the floor, their bodies bloodied, with knives still gripped in their hands. It looked like they’d fought each other to death.
Suddenly, an agonized scream echoed from somewhere unknown, causing Zhao Yunzhi, who had never seen such carnage before, to shudder in fear.
Meng Jin rushed toward the bathroom. The screams were coming from inside, and they hadn’t stopped.
He Saibing was about to give birth.
The bathroom door was locked from the inside. With his ankle sprained from kicking the front door, Meng Jin couldn’t muster enough strength, so Zhao Yunzhi grabbed a chair and started smashing it against the door.
The door flew open. He Saibing lay on the ground, a pool of thick liquid beneath her—her water had broken.
The two men, clueless about what to do, called 120 (emergency services). But seeing that He Saibing’s condition was dire, they couldn’t wait. Desperate, they searched for birthing videos online and followed along. It was touch-and-go for a while, but with guidance from the 120 doctors, they eventually managed to deliver the baby.
He Saibing gave birth to a baby girl, but her condition was critical, so the 120 team took both mother and child to the hospital. Meng Jin begged the doctors to do everything to save them. He Saibing was a key witness—her testimony was crucial.
As for the two deceased at the scene, one was Guo Tiandi, the other Lin Jiancai. Lin Jiancai had his ID on him. The police contacted Lin Jiancai’s hometown police station, and two people familiar with him were brought in to confirm that the body was indeed Lin Jiancai.
Meng Jin compared the blood samples from Guo Tiandi and Lin Jiancai, and the results showed they were related as grandfather and grandson. This added further evidence to Liu Er’s case.
Now that He Saibing had given birth, all that remained was to prove the child was Guo Tiandi’s. If so, Liu Er posing as Guo Tiandi would be undeniable.
Zhao Yunzhi handed a plastic tube to Meng Jin, containing two fine strands of hair—plucked from the newborn’s head.
Meng Jin scolded Zhao Yunzhi for being heartless, even towards a newborn. Zhao Yunzhi begged for mercy, claiming it was all Long De’s idea.
Curious about the results, Meng Jin handed the samples to the forensic department. The results were as expected: He Saibing’s child and Guo Tiandi were father and daughter, meaning the so-called Guo Tiandi was actually Liu Er.
Meng Jin applied for an arrest warrant and eagerly set out to apprehend Jennie Yang.
Jennie Yang remained as calm as ever, almost making Meng Jin doubt his own judgment. But he stood firm—without Jennie Yang’s help, Liu Er couldn’t have fooled everyone.
Three forensic reports lay in front of Jennie Yang.
Jennie explained that Guo Tiandi was actually her and Lin Kun’s son. As for the relationship between Guo Tiandi and He Saibing’s child, she said that only He Saibing could explain that.
Meng Jin laughed in disbelief. Faced with ironclad evidence, Jennie Yang still shamelessly denied everything. With Lin Kun’s entire family dead, there was no one to contradict her, and she thought she could make up any story she wanted.
Meng Jin brought Li Feiya before Jennie Yang. Li Feiya was shocked to see her, never imagining that the woman Lin Kun had once fiercely defended was none other than the infamous Jennie Yang.
Li Feiya testified that Lin Kun and Lin Dongzhi—who was actually Guo Tiandi—were not related by blood, and that Lin Kun was TXL (likely a coded identity).
Jennie, however, had a different story. She claimed that she had long known about Li Feiya’s existence and her obsession with Lin Kun, as Lin Kun had told her all about their interactions.
To prove her point, Jennie recounted many details of Li Feiya’s time with Lin Kun, even knowing about the red mole on Li Feiya’s left breast. This meant that Lin Kun had told Jennie everything, even the embarrassing moment when Li Feiya had stripped for him only to be thrown out.
Li Feiya was flooded with a sense of shame. She could almost picture Jennie Yang sneering at her with disdain.
Jennie then delivered a further blow to Li Feiya’s pride, claiming that Lin Kun wasn’t actually TXL, and that the so-called diary Li Feiya had seen was a fake Lin Kun had created just to rid himself of her.
Years ago, Li Feiya had only tested Lin Dongzhi and Lin Kun’s blood types, but the results had been lost. She was certain Guo Tiandi wasn’t Lin Dongzhi from back then, but without evidence, she couldn’t prove anything.
Three days later, the hospital brought good news: He Saibing had been stabilized.
Meng Jin and Zhao Yunzhi rushed to the hospital room, eager to know what had happened between Guo Tiandi and Lin Jiancai.
He Saibing’s testimony went as follows: She had ordered her usual takeout and opened the door when the doorbell rang. Guo Tiandi suddenly barged in, holding a knife, saying he was going to kill her. She asked why, and he said it was because she was carrying Liu Er’s child. He hated Liu Er and couldn’t allow Liu Er’s child to fight for his inheritance. He had worked so hard to reach this point and couldn’t share his victory with anyone. She begged for her life, but it was no use. Guo Tiandi slashed her neck. At that moment, Lin Jiancai rushed in to save her. She hid in the bedroom, listening to the sounds of a fight outside. When the noise stopped, she dared to come out, only to find both men lying on the ground. She ran to the window to call for help, and saw that Guo Tiandi still had a faint breath left. Afraid he might get up again, she locked herself in the bathroom. Not long after, Meng Jin and the others broke in.
As for how Lin Jiancai happened to appear at such a convenient time, He Saibing explained that Lin Jiancai had always delivered her takeout in person. She speculated that Guo Tiandi had run into Lin Jiancai downstairs, but didn’t recognize him, while Lin Jiancai recognized him and sensed danger, so he followed him upstairs and saved her.
Her explanation seemed reasonable, but upon closer scrutiny, many parts didn’t quite add up. It was as if Lin Jiancai and He Saibing had anticipated Guo Tiandi’s actions and set a trap for him.
But how could Lin Jiancai’s death be explained? If he had set the trap, wouldn’t he have protected himself? Why would they both end up stabbing each other to death? Moreover, what motive did Lin Jiancai and He Saibing have for killing anyone?
If Lin Jiancai didn’t know that Guo Tiandi was Liu Er, what motive would he have to kill him? One possibility was that he knew Guo Tiandi planned to strike and acted first. But who tipped him off? The second possibility was that he wanted He Saibing’s child to inherit Fang Zheng Group and eliminate Guo Tiandi as a rival. Both possibilities could be true simultaneously.
If Lin Jiancai knew that Guo Tiandi was Liu Er, would he really kill his own grandson? The likelihood was low, but not impossible. If he didn’t know, then he had been used.
Regardless of the scenario, it seemed a hidden hand was guiding everything. Who knew Guo Tiandi’s actions so well? The answer was obvious.
Jennie Yang.
So, what role did He Saibing play? Did she know that Guo Tiandi was Liu Er?
If she did, who told her? The only possibility was Jennie Yang. Could Jennie Yang have orchestrated everything from the beginning? Did she tell He Saibing everything right from the start?
The more Meng Jin thought about it, the more terrifying it became.
Jennie Yang and He Saibing denied all these speculations.
Meng Jin formally requested a paternity test for He Saibing’s child and Guo Tiandi, and to his surprise, He Saibing agreed without hesitation.
She confessed that she and Guo Tiandi had engaged in an unspeakable relationship. She didn’t like Guo Tiandi and even looked down on him. But Guo Tiandi was Guo Yingying’s brother, and he loved Guo Yingying more than anyone else. Jealous of Guo Yingying, she developed a pathological desire to take everything from her.
She had seduced Guo Tiandi, and after discovering she was pregnant, she insisted the child was Liu Er’s. She never imagined that Guo Tiandi was Jennie Yang’s illegitimate child.
Meng Jin sought Guo Yingying’s confirmation of He Saibing and Guo Tiandi’s relationship, but Guo Yingying adamantly said it was impossible for them to have had an affair.
Yet, He Saibing produced irrefutable evidence—a video of her and Guo Tiandi in an intimate situation.
Even though He Saibing had the video evidence, Guo Yingying didn’t accept it. She claimed that Guo Tiandi had been with her that day and couldn’t have met with He Saibing, but she had no proof.
Meng Jin felt as though he had fallen into a bottomless pit, its walls smooth as glass, with no way to climb out. He could see the exit clearly above, yet couldn’t find a single handhold.
The saying “the law’s net is vast and sparse, but nothing escapes” seemed to mock him.
Just as he was desperately searching for a way out, he received orders from the director to stop investigating.
Jennie Yang was not an ordinary person. Her contributions to the city and the entire country were immense. If the police kept pushing her, it would have immeasurable negative effects on her and Fang Zheng Group, impacting many areas.
Top officials from across the country had called, urging the police to stop pursuing Jennie Yang.
Jennie Yang appeared in the media, unscathed. As for the growing waves of doubt, she faced them with a smile.
Eventually, Guo Yingying learned the cruel truth: the real Guo Tiandi had long been dead, burned to ashes with no body left to bury.
Unable to accept this harsh reality, she stormed into the Fang Zheng Group building. Security stopped her, but she threw a wild tantrum, demanding revenge on Jennie Yang.
It was said that Jennie Yang personally came out to meet her and welcomed her into her office. An hour later, Guo Yingying left Fang Zheng Group with a face drained of all hope.
No one knew what Jennie Yang had said to her, but rumors began to spread wildly. People started painting Jennie Yang as some kind of saint, claiming her saintly aura had moved Guo Yingying.
Three days later, Guo Yingying jumped from the rooftop of a sanatorium, ending her brief, dazzling, but ultimately tragic life.
Meng Jin was driven to madness. He took off his police uniform and, as an ordinary man, walked into Fang Zheng Group, demanding Jennie Yang give him the truth.
Jennie personally drove him to a location—the cliff where Guo Tiandi had died in a car accident.
She said her innocence had long frozen on that snowy night when her mother threw her out of the house. It had thawed and died since then. Even if Meng Jin were to die right in front of her, she would never tell him the so-called truth he sought.
As for why Guo Yingying committed suicide? Jennie speculated it was due to utter despair. Guo Yingying realized her beloved brother had betrayed her long ago. The only flame in her heart had been extinguished, and her heart had gone cold—dead.
With that, Jennie Yang left, driving off alone.
Meng Jin sat at the edge of the cliff, pondering the meaning behind Jennie Yang’s words.
Guo Tiandi had betrayed Guo Yingying long ago? What did that mean?
He couldn’t figure it out. For the first time, he reached out to Long De for advice.
After thinking for half the night, Long De gave him the answer—Guo Tiandi and Guo Yingying had been imprisoned together. As clever as Guo Tiandi was, he likely guessed Jennie Yang’s plan to use a substitute, but he didn’t stop it. He didn’t try to save Guo Yingying. Instead, he agreed to help Jennie Yang carry out her plan.
That was the betrayal.
With Guo Yingying and Guo Tiandi both dead, no one knew the truth except Jennie Yang. Long De’s answer was merely a guess.
But why would Guo Tiandi betray his sister to help someone who wanted to kill him?
Long De said, “Maybe he craved a mother’s love too much.”
Even if he knew she was a wicked mother.
