Heewoon was breathing roughly. His chest felt tight with the sudden intake of air. He couldn’t breathe properly and felt like he was going to pass out at any moment.
Is he dead? With trembling eyes filled with fear, he stared at the motionless man lying there. I-it, seems like he’s dead. What should I do? I need to call the police fast.
Heewoon’s body was shaking as he typed out the message.
There were numerous typos, but he didn’t have time to correct them. Breathing heavily, he was just about to press the send button when he noticed something strange. Suddenly, everything around him became eerily quiet.
Heewoon peered through the crack in the crate again.
“Come out.”
A low voice casually echoed in the quiet situation. Heewoon’s shoulders slumped.
No way. No way.
“It won’t be good if I go there.”
Heewoon tightly closed his eyes, desperately hoping that it wasn’t directed at him.
“Come out now.”
Seo Kangwoo said irritably.
It was the same tone just like how he had been earlier before he stabbed that man in the neck.
Heewoon’s face turned pale. He had hidden well and hadn’t made a sound, so there was no way he was caught. It couldn’t be. He clutched his phone as if it were his lifeline. Once again, everything fell silent. The vast space was only filled with the buzzing of grasshoppers.
Heewoon was about to cover his mouth to muffle his breathing in case he would break the silence.
“You really don’t listen well.”
At the same time as he heard a voice above him, he felt his hair was being painfully yanked. At that moment, Heewoon’s hand slipped and accidentally pressed the send button.
“Aaaaaack!”
He felt the pain like his scalp being ripped apart. When he looked up, he met eyes that were strangely glowing. Fear swallowed his whole body.
Seo Kangwoo’s eyes shone with a glint as he slowly walked forward. Heewoon’s pale face was unable to even let out a scream. Heewoon’s legs were dragged along the ground, kicking up a cloud of dust.
“Ugh… Uh…”
Heewoon frantically shifted his gaze, but it would have been better if he hadn’t. Because he just met the eyes of a dying man lying in a pool of blood.
Blood flowed out from under the man’s chin so profusely that it felt unreal. The red puddle under him continued to grow larger. His hand was shapeless and distorted, scrabbling helplessly on the ground.
Heewoon’s eyes met the quickly-dying man’s gaze once again.
A scream finally escaped his throat.
“Aaack-!”
Heewoon struggled, eyes wide open.
“Stay still.”
“Let me go, let me go!”
Heewoon’s flailing hand clawed at the back of Kangwoo’s hand. Frowning, Kangwoo stopped walking, and roughly pulled Heewoon’s hair back, making eye contact with him.
“Aack-!”
Heewoon jumped as he met the gaze of a murderer.
“Quiet.”
With Kangwoo’s low voice, his scream immediately stopped.
“Eugh…”
Heewoon made a choked sound, his chin trembling. Kangwoo calmly observed Heewoon’s pale face.
At the end of the long silence, Kangwoo spoke.
“It’s noisy, so don’t scream.”
“Uh… yes, yes.”
Kangwoo kept his gaze at him for a little longer as if to warn him, then he released Heewoon’s hair and took a step back. Heewoon didn’t dare to rub his numb head and nervously looked around. Other men were standing motionless a few steps behind them.
And.
Right next to them, a man was dying.
A bloodied hand twitched in the corner of his eyes. Red blood was slowly crawling toward his sneakers, as if being controlled. Heewoon recoiled in horror.
Thunk. Heewoon turned around after feeling something hard hit his back, only to see Seo Kangwoo’s cold face staring down at him. Heewoon’s face twisted as he crawled backwards.
Watching silently as Heewoon crawled on the ground, Kangwoo bent his knees and sat down. Heewoon avoided his eyes, so Kangwoo tilted Heewoon’s head as if trying to catch his gaze.
Trembling with fear, Heewoon closed his eyes tight. He was so scared that he felt like he was going to die. This was the first time he felt so scared in his 26 years of life. This was definitely scarier than when the debt collectors came to find him.
“Are you scared?”
“Yes, yes…”
Heewoon replied with a shaky voice and then looked up, flinching in surprise. Seo Kangwoo was smiling widely. Just a few hours ago, Heewoon would have been thrilled by that smile and froze in place, but now he was only frightened.
“Really, why did you follow me all the way here today?”
Heewoon’s eyes widened as he nervously listened to Kangwoo’s seemingly gentle voice. He said ‘today’. It was as if he knew that Heewoon had been stalking him.
“Hm?”
Since when did he know?
“You usually leave by 8 PM. Have you decided to follow me all day long now?”
He even knew that Heewoon stayed in front of his house until 8 PM. How much did he know about it?
It was when Heewoon had fallen into a panic and confusion.
“Clench your teeth.”
Before Heewoon could process what Kangwoo meant, his vision suddenly went white. A large hand hit his head, hard enough to make a sound. With his head lowerer, Heewoon held his cheek in his hand, blinking his eyes several times. His vision was blurry. His head hurt badly, and there was a taste of blood in his mouth when he breathed in pain.
Kangwoo’s hand reached down and lifted his chin. You really don’t listen. Kangwoo clicked his tongue at the blood trickling down the side of Heewoon’s mouth.
“Woo Heewoon. Heewoon sunbae.”
“Uhhhhh….”
“When people talk to you, you have to listen and answer them, okay?”
“I’m sor…ry…”
Kangwoo wiped away the blood that had flowed down Heewoon’s lips with his fingertip, looking at Heewoon, who lowered his eyes. His touch was warm and soft. It wasn’t a bad feeling at all.
“What did I ask you earlier?”
Kangwoo’s voice softened.
“…Ah. Why, why. Why did I follow you all the way here today…”
Kangwoo wasn’t killing him off, but Heewoon looked like he was about to die. Then he closed his lips tightly.
“Sunbae must be a bit stupid. Do you want to get hit again?”
“Uuuuuh… No, no.”
Woo Heewoon shook his head vigorously. But his eyes kept glancing over Kangwoo’s hand and felt moist.
“That, earlier. I was about to go home, but then you came out….”
Heewoon looked at Kangwoo and he motioned for him to continue. His mind was turning into a jumbled mess.
Seo Kangwoo had stabbed someone and he also knew about the stalking. Now he was asking about it.
Would admitting to stalking make his death even more terrible? Should he hide it? Or should he be honest and ask for forgiveness? He had already witnessed the murder, would Kangwoo spare him? What are the police doing?
At that moment, Kangwoo grabbed Heewoon’s face with one hand. The small face twisted in his hand.
“I-It hurts….”
“Don’t think too much. Tell me properly.”
“Yes, yes.”
Trembling with fear, Heewoon answered repeatedly.
Kangwoo’s large hand slapped his cheek as a warning. His jaw felt like it was about to break and his cheek was twitching, but Kangwoo’s gaze towards him was cold.
He could kill him at any moment. Heewoon could no longer remain calm. His mouth moved on its own accord.
“Y-you, you wore a suit and looked so cool… I thought you were going to a nightclub, a-and so I followed you.”
“….”
Kangwoo tilted his head and stared at Heewoon. As Heewoon looked at him, he added formality like he had a realization.
“I followed you, sir.”
Kangwoo stared at Heewoon for a while before bursting out in a smile. Then he asked quite sweetly,
“Did you follow me because you thought I was going to hook up with another person?”
“T-that’s not it….”
Heewoon denied it for now. Kangwoo’s mouth twitched upwards, showing no signs of being upset.
Heewoon looked around. At some point, all the other men had disappeared, leaving only bloodstains on the floor. There were only him and Kangwoo left in this place.
But he wasn’t even considering fighting him back.
He had no confidence in winning against him. His palm already hurt so much, a good punch from him would definitely knock him out.
Heewoon was so weak to violence that even his loan sharks were surprised.
Feeling desperate, he began to think about the police. He should have received a message from the police. Was it a dispatch message? They’re on their way, right? Let’s buy some time for now.
“H-how long have you known?”
“From the beginning. I think there’s only you, Sunbae, who would be so obvious at following around.”
Kangwoo, making a gentle face, stroked Heewoon’s head.
“I’m sorry. At first, I-I just wanted to follow and walk with you..”
Kangwoo listened patiently to Heewoon’s stuttering, disconnected words.
“It makes me happy watching you, but I know I shouldn’t have done it. It’s my fault. I-I won’t do it anymore.”
“Why not?”
“…Huh?”
Heewoon asked with a puzzled face.
“It was so funny how you chased me like an idiot. Why would you stop?”
“…Uh, then I’ll, I’ll keep following you.”
“You’ll keep following me?”
Kangwoo’s eyes twinkled with laughter as he furrowed his brows slightly.
Heewoon realized it a little too late. Seo Kangwoo was playing with him. If he got bored of playing with him, he might even kill him. He started to think somewhat rationally. Kangwoo was the culprit, and he was the witness. In other words, Seo Kangwoo, who killed a person, had no reason to keep him alive.
He was going to die.
