“I wanted to swim tomorrow too…”
Heewoon muttered softly. Kangwoo’s chuckling laughter echoed.
Heewoon, exhausted, draped himself over Kangwoo’s shoulders. Spending a long time in the water seemed to consume more energy. Kangwoo embraced Heewoon, bringing him out of the pool and laying him on a sunbed. While drying Heewoon’s body with a beach towel, Heewoon dozed off.
Kangwoo looked at Heewoon for a moment, playfully poked his cheek, then pulled him into an embrace. Without any signs of exhaustion, Kangwoo carried Heewoon upstairs and laid him on the bed. After carefully covering Heewoon with a blanket, Kangwoo lay down beside him. When their arms touched, Heewoon, seeking warmth, snuggled into Kangwoo’s embrace. A smile crossed Kangwoo’s face as he closed his eyes.
Heewoon and Kangwoo woke up about two hours later. Surprised to find himself in bed, Heewoon glanced at his waist where Kangwoo’s arm rested and understood. Kangwoo always slept with his arms around him. Even though it would have been more comfortable to sleep a bit apart, it was always like this.
Avoiding Kangwoo’s suggestion to shower together, Heewoon sneaked away and finished showering on the first floor. Kangwoo, wearing a shower gown, touched Heewoon’s neck as he went back upstairs, but thankfully, they didn’t entwine their bodies again.
Opening the suitcase and rummaging through the clothes, Heewoon took out a thin short-sleeved shirt, and Kangwoo placed a long-sleeved shirt over Heewoon’s head.
“Don’t start sniffling again because you’re cold.”
Heewoon had caught a cold the day he followed Kangwoo. Even though he was almost over it now, Kangwoo often gave him a doubtful glare.
“When did I….”
Heewoon muttered frustratedly, but in a low voice. Seo Kangwoo didn’t seem to hear him.
Heewoon stepped outside, holding the shirt in his hands. With about two hours to spare before dinner, they planned to have a short drive.
A blue sports car glided along the sparsely populated road, beneath a sky of pure blue, untouched by a single white cloud, illuminated by the brilliant sunlight.
Wearing sunglasses with a design similar to Kangwoo’s, Heewoon admired the turquoise sea. It was fascinating to see the colors of the ocean divided by the coral reef.
His hair tousled in the wind, and his clothes fluttering, Heewoon felt a slight chill and casually put on the shirt. Kangwoo’s gaze lingered for a moment.
Whenever they came across a beautiful spot, they stopped to take pictures. Kangwoo took several photos of Heewoon, but he hadn’t sent a single one to Heewoon himself. He felt a bit displeased about that.
Dinner took place on the private beach in front of their pool villa. A stylish table adorned with flowers and candles was set up, and soon, only Heewoon and Kangwoo remained.
Heewoon gazed at the sea. Palm trees with spread-out leaves, distant shadows of surfers, low-hanging clouds, and the horizon tinged with red. It was beautiful, as if from a different world.
“I want to come here again.”
The voice inside his heart unexpectedly burst out.
“Then we can come here again.”
Heewoon turned his head. Kangwoo, with a faint smile, was looking at him, chin rested on his hand. Although Heewoon had been busy absorbing new experiences throughout the day, Kangwoo’s gaze always seemed to be directed at him.
“Have you been to Hawaii before?”
Kangwoo shook his head. Heewoon, fiddling with the tablecloth, said.
“I’ll try to be more relaxed starting tomorrow.”
At Heewoon’s words, Kangwoo’s eyebrows slightly furrowed. Why? He asked as if not understanding.
“Because I think I was too excited.”
Heewoon said dully, then sipped his cocktail. The glass adorned with pineapple and cherries was bathed in the light of the sunset.
Kangwoo looked at Heewoon’s hand holding the cocktail, then shifted his gaze to Heewoon’s reddening cheek. He slowly opened his mouth.
“Sunbae, I’ve been thinking about our next trip today.”
“….”
“I want it to be as soon as possible. I can’t even remember how busy I was to schedule this one
“Still, next time, I hope you won’t overexert yourself. We can go when you have free time. I hate not being able to see your face properly everyday.”
In the exotic landscape bathed in the red glow of the sunset, Heewoon didn’t hide his inner thoughts and let them be expressed.
Haaaa. Kangwoo sighed. Lowering the hand that had been on his chin, he lightly tapped the table. It was his gesture of having uncontrollable emotions.
“You…”
Kangwoo was about to speak but held back. Heewoon, thinking Kangwoo looked kind of annoyed, thought that he might have misspoken. Kangwoo took a deep breath before finally speaking.
“This time, it was because I rushed to make this last-minute holiday happen. If we decide in advance, it will be fine.”
“Then…”
Heewoon hesitated to speak, and Kangwoo quietly waited.
“Will you be home earlier from now on?”
With a cautious question, Kangwoo finally stood up and kissed Heewoon.
In the background of the sunset, the silhouettes of the two people merged into one. A brief red shine followed the curves of their lips and noses, repeatedly appearing and disappearing.
It was their first summer together.
