Chapter 30: Teaming Up to Fight Monsters
As I observed them, they all wore anxious expressions on their faces. Qing Ming tightened his grip on the Green Dragon Crescent Blade, Si Yino held Xiaobai tightly, and like them, all the new students seemed ready for action. The atmosphere in the classroom instantly became tense, almost suffocating.
Just then, the center of the circular classroom suddenly opened, and pieces of the floor floated up. With a flash of golden light, a figure shot out like a shooting star!
As the golden light dissipated, a man with medium-length silver-black hair stood solemnly on the central podium, wearing a silver-black long coat. The floor beneath him had returned to its original state.
His eyes were thin and long, his nose unusually straight, and his lips thin but tinged with a purplish-red color! Between his eyebrows, there was a silver-colored mark, giving his face a chilling and cold appearance.
He had silver-black hair that resembled that of an Egyptian, but what was up with that bangs hairstyle!
However, this hairstyle, combined with his expression, didn’t feel out of place at all; it was strangely fitting and even evoked a sense of fear.
I believe the most challenging hairstyle to pull off is not the “three-seven” haircut, but rather, the bangs hairstyle in front of me!
“Whoosh!” All the new students stood up and bowed. “Hello, Teacher Yang!”
I quickly followed suit. They all know him! Right, Jiang Yan mentioned that they have been in this academy since they were young, so it’s natural for them to be acquainted.
“Sit down,” Teacher Yang said, sweeping his long and narrow eyes around with disdain, as if the ones sitting in front of him were not prodigies or children of gods and demons, but mere rookies.
Just as I wondered if he could see behind us, I suddenly witnessed his body splitting! It divided into three! Just like Nezha, he transformed into a three-headed, six-armed figure, each head facing a different direction.
Well, I was overthinking. I forgot that this is the Divine and Demon Academy.
Teacher Yang’s gaze landed on us, and I immediately lowered my head. I heard his cold voice saying, “I hope you won’t end up like those useless ones who sit in the new student classroom every year and appear before my eyes annually!” As he spoke, Teacher Yang exuded a strong killing intent, as if seeing Jiang Yan and the others sitting in the new student classroom each year infuriated him, like an ordinary teacher in the mortal world annoyed by a few underperforming students affecting their performance.
“Snore.” Jiang Yan calmly sipped his wine. Si Yino and Qing Ming looked in different directions, not fearing this dark arts teacher as much as the other new students. It was evident that they had endured many years of hardships to develop such thick-skinned and impervious mentalities…
Stronger than me. I had always believed that my thick skin had reached its peak, unbeatable by anyone. But as expected, there is always someone better, with even thicker skin.
Among us, only Mao Mao lowered her face even more in shame.
“Yes!” all the new students exclaimed in unison.
I secretly lifted my head and saw that Mr. Yang, the Dark Arts teacher, was no longer looking in our direction, but his expression still conveyed the belief that everyone owed him money. “I have reviewed your new student tests this year and I know that there are many outstanding students among you. However! In this academy, excellence is not determined by how strong you are, because there will always be individuals stronger than you! How will you face them?” Dark Yang scanned the surroundings with a cold gaze.
A student stood up, brave and resolute. “We will continue to fight!” When this courageous student answered with determination, Dark Yang suddenly waved his black sleeve and “boom!”—an invisible force immediately sent the student flying, crashing directly into the wall and sinking deep into it.
Nervously, all the students swallowed as Dark Yang coldly scanned each one of them. “Then you shall perish! Today’s lesson is about teamwork! You must learn how to work together as a team and overcome enemies stronger than yourselves! Now, form teams of five, choose your own groups. Remember, you will be facing real combat, no longer the magical trials of the immortal realm!”
What?! We have to team up to fight monsters!
Isn’t this progressing too quickly?!
When new recruits enter the camp, they usually have to run, kick, and stand in military postures. And here I am, jumping straight into combat!
“Let’s team up,” Jiang Yan said. I stared at him dumbfounded, still processing the situation. Qing Ming, Si Yino, Jiang Yan, and Mao Mao had already extended their hands, interlocking them together. They looked at me, and I held my bag with only a pencil and a notebook. “I didn’t bring anything.”
“It’s fine,” Jiang Yan reassured me, placing his hand on my shoulder. “Worst case scenario, we die.”
What?!?!
“Senior Jiang Yan… don’t scare Xiaolan sister like that… At most, she won’t get any credits…” Mao Mao said, offering a somewhat reassuring outcome.
Alright, I’m going all in. As long as I don’t die, I can make up for the lost credits later!
And since everyone doesn’t mind that I’m just a mortal and is willing to have me on their team, I can’t complain anymore.
I decisively reached out my hand and placed it on top of everyone else’s.
“Very well! Now that the groups are formed, let the teleportation begin!” Just as Dark Yang’s voice fell, our seating positions suddenly dropped, as if we were entering a tunnel at the speed of light. We all began descending together!
No way! Are we starting the battle already?!!
How am I supposed to fight with just a notebook and a few pens!!!
As my feet touched the ground, the sound of cars whizzed by.
“Vroom—”
“Honk—honk!” The bustling noise of the city immediately filled my ears, startling me from the tranquil immortal realm I had just been in.
I stared in astonishment at the street ahead—pedestrians, trash cans, and… someone near the trash cans. Suddenly, I felt a bit disoriented, as if everything in the previous immortal realm had been a dream, and I had just dozed off on the street.
“What’s wrong, Sister Xiaolan?” Amidst the clamor of voices, Mao Mao’s worried voice reached me from afar.
“I think her brain couldn’t process the transition between the two realms at once, so she’s feeling a bit disoriented. The difference between the immortal realm and the mortal realm is too vast, like the distinction between a virtual world and reality. It makes the brain unable to distinguish which one is the real world and which one is the dream.”
“Oh…”
Slowly, I regained my senses and glanced at them sideways. “Seeing all of you, I know it’s the real world!” But when I saw them, I was taken aback. They had changed their outfits without me noticing!
Qing Ming and Mao Mao were dressed similarly, wearing oversized dark hoodies that concealed their faces, resembling black hip-hop artists.
Jiang Yan had changed into a casual sports jacket, and the blood bag in his hand had transformed into a carton of strawberry juice!
Si Yino’s Little White was nowhere to be seen! Only a white scarf remained around his neck! A warm fluffy knit cap covered his white hair.
I immediately looked at myself, but my clothes hadn’t changed.
Then I looked at them again. “When did you change? How sneaky!”
Jiang Yan pointed at my school uniform. “It’s the school uniform. Like your Cloud-Threading Shoes, it has transformation capabilities, making it easier for us to blend into the mortal realm.”
“The mortal realm!” I looked around once again. We were standing in front of a rundown apartment building, surrounded by passing cars and busy people who paid no attention to us. “This is really the mortal realm!”
“Indeed, Xiaolan. It’s time for real combat. Be careful.” Jiang Yan placed his hand on my shoulder, and suddenly, I felt a heavy burden and immense pressure!
Si Yino pulled up the white scarf to cover his face, and two eyes peeked out from behind it! Damn it! Little White had turned into a scarf!
He timidly looked at everyone from behind the scarf. “Shouldn’t we… do things like before… pretend to fight… and then say… we can’t win…”
What’s going on? Is this some kind of trickery?
