HH Chapter 11

Corpse in the back mountain

“Even if I’m not lying, so what? I don’t know him,” Chen Fei said slowly, hugging her arms tighter.

Jiang Fei, who had thought he could reason with a minor, was taken aback by her audacity. He slammed the table and raised his voice, “Hey! You…”

Cheng Ye quickly pulled Jiang Fei back and signaled him to calm down. Just then, Pei Qinghuai knocked on the interrogation room door and called out with a smile, “Captain Cheng.”

Cheng Ye turned around, raised an eyebrow, and patted Jiang Fei’s shoulder, signaling him to stay calm. He then got up and walked out.

“What’s up?” Cheng Ye asked.

Pei Qinghuai, standing sideways, let his gaze drift from Cheng Ye to Chen Fei. “Can I give it a try?”

“You?” Cheng Ye raised an eyebrow. “How much do you know?”

Pei Qinghuai shrugged and squinted slightly. “At least a bit more than you, Captain.”

Cheng Ye scoffed, finding him somewhat amusing, then sniffed and opened the door to the interrogation room. “Jiang Fei, come out.”

Jiang Fei quickly stood up and exited. “Is there something you need, Captain?”

Cheng Ye stepped aside, gesturing invitingly. “Mr. Pei, please.”

Pei Qinghuai glanced at Jiang Fei with a hint of resignation, then entered the interrogation room. He bent over and turned off the light in front of Chen Fei, observing her intently.

Cheng Ye clenched his jaw, gave Jiang Fei a stern look, then shut the door and sat next to Pei Qinghuai, twirling a pen in his hand.

Jiang Fei, after being shut out, promptly relayed the situation to the others, resulting in a crowd gathering in the observation room to watch the interrogation.

Time passed, and Pei Qinghuai still hadn’t spoken, merely watching Chen Fei.

“What’s going on now?” Chen Xiaonuan asked, looking around.

“No idea. Why isn’t anyone talking?” Fang Yuan leaned forward, pressing his ear to the glass.

Jiang Fei pulled on Fang Yuan’s collar. “Move aside, you’re blocking my view.”

Fang Yuan rolled his eyes. “There’s plenty of space. Why do you have to look from here?”

Just as Jiang Fei was about to retort, a sound finally came from the interrogation room. Pei Qinghuai’s voice was calm, as if having a casual conversation. “You do know Tian Mingwei, don’t you?”

Cheng Ye sneered but remained silent. Chen Fei, about to deny it, was interrupted by Pei Qinghuai. “Tian Mingwei must have hit you pretty hard.”

Pei Qinghuai’s smile seemed practiced, almost enigmatic, making it hard to decipher his true intentions.

Cheng Ye’s expression froze for a moment. He glanced at Pei Qinghuai and then at Chen Fei. With the light in front of her turned off, the room was dimmer, and Chen Fei’s nose twitched as she clutched Jiang Fei’s coat tighter.

“He hit people?” Chen Fei’s voice trembled involuntarily.

Pei Qinghuai ignored her question and continued, “Tian Mingwei liked to choke you, didn’t he? I’m not wrong, am I?”

As Pei Qinghuai spoke, Cheng Ye and the group in the observation room were left bewildered.

“Did we find anything about Tian Mingwei being abusive in our investigation?” Fang Yuan asked, astonished. “Has he been secretly investigating behind our backs?”

Zhang Yibao slapped Fang Yuan’s back hard. “Mr. Pei has been with me the whole time. Aside from asking for Li Xiaoyan’s address, he’s been focusing on Tian Mingwei’s personal records.”

“I can vouch for that,” Chen Xiaonuan raised her hand like a schoolchild. “I went to Li Xiaoyan’s house with Mr. Pei, and then we came straight back to the station.”
