Cheng Ye’s heart ached inexplicably, and his hand under the table clenched tightly.
“Alright,” he said. “We’ll catch the killer as soon as possible.”
With the family’s consent, Yan Ya began her work as quickly as possible. Cheng Yuanjun stayed at the station for a while before supporting his wife out. After they left, Cheng Ye sat down, gulping water as if trying to suppress emotions that shouldn’t be there.
Early the next morning, the results from the substance found under Chen Mengyao’s nails came back. Yan Ya delivered the report to Cheng Ye immediately, looking disappointed. “The results are out; it’s just common fiber. This stuff is found on almost everyone’s clothes.”
Cheng Ye frowned at the lab report. “What about Cheng Xiaoxiao?”
“The toxicology tests are still ongoing, probably a few more hours,” Yan Ya replied.
Cheng Ye placed the report on the table. They had worked all night and found nothing. Feeling frustrated, he grabbed the report, crumpled it, and threw it in the trash.
“Cheng Team, Li Cheng is the deputy director of a kindergarten and has a record of harassing women,” Zhang Yibao said, looking at Cheng Ye.
“Let’s go to the kindergarten,” Cheng Ye said. Fang Yuan and Pei Qinghuai stood up simultaneously.
Fang Yuan glanced at Cheng Ye, then at Pei Qinghuai, and awkwardly smiled. “You go ahead,” Pei Qinghuai said, sitting back down. “I need a break.”
“Alright! Thanks, Professor Pei,” Fang Yuan said, rubbing his hands together.
As soon as the two left, Jiang Fei’s curiosity couldn’t be contained. He looked at Pei Qinghuai and asked, “What did you say to Cheng Team last night? His mood changed so quickly.”
The question piqued everyone else’s curiosity, and they all turned to Pei Qinghuai, waiting for an answer.
Pei Qinghuai cleared his throat and straightened up. “I didn’t do much, just gave Captain Cheng a quick psychological counseling session.”
He paused, then added, “By the way, I have a lecture at the university next Saturday. If any of you have time, come listen. Especially Cheng Ye; he needs some thorough psychological guidance.”
Chen Xiaonuan snickered. “Is it really that serious with Captain Cheng?”
“Yes, and it’s not minor,” Pei Qinghuai replied.
“Tell us more,” Jiang Fei urged, intrigued.
“No way,” Pei Qinghuai refused. “If he finds out I talked about this, he’ll skin me alive.”
“Professor Pei afraid?” Zhang Yibao teased, popping his head out.
Pei Qinghuai sighed. “Of course. I always feel like there’s a pair of…”
Suddenly, Pei Qinghuai froze, a flash of fear in his eyes. Everyone else paused, looking at him. “Professor Pei… what’s wrong?”
Pei Qinghuai raised his head and looked at Zhang Yibao. “Did Cheng Ye give you the keys? To 301?”
Zhang Yibao was puzzled but answered, “Yes, he did.”
“Give them to me. I’m going to Chen Mengyao’s place,” Pei Qinghuai said.
Zhang Yibao hesitated for a moment, then retrieved the keys from a drawer. “Professor Pei, I’ll go with you.”
Meanwhile, Cheng Ye drove to the kindergarten without stopping, the car screeching to a halt at the entrance. Fang Yuan, still shaken, sat in the passenger seat and gave Cheng Ye a thumbs up. “Captain, your driving skills have improved a lot.”
“Get out,” Cheng Ye ordered.
“Alright,” Fang Yuan responded quickly.
