Seeing the boy’s reaction, Cheng Ye rushed into the room ahead of everyone else, making sure to turn off the live stream on Guo Jiayi’s phone to avoid further trouble.
“Guo Jiayi!” Cheng Ye shouted, but there was no response from the man slumped over the table. The little boy followed him in, crying even harder.
Yan Ya entered the room carrying a medical kit. After a minute of examination, she sighed in relief and stood up. “It seems to be just a case of low blood sugar. Nothing serious.”
“Low blood sugar?” Cheng Ye looked puzzled.
Yan Ya nodded, pouting slightly. “Yes, call for an ambulance.”
The paramedics soon arrived, and Cheng Ye was pushed to the door. Fang Yuan leaned against the wall, letting out a sigh. “Another false alarm.”
Chen Xiaonuan spoke seriously, “How can it be a false alarm? Severe low blood sugar can be life-threatening.”
Yan Ya coughed softly and said, “Though it’s inappropriate to say this now, I think you should know that he actually just fell asleep.”
“Asleep?”
“Asleep?”
Chen Xiaonuan and Fang Yuan both exclaimed in surprise. Cheng Ye glanced back into the room and then at Yan Ya. “Didn’t you say he fainted from low blood sugar?”
Yan Ya chuckled. “Low blood sugar, yes. Fainted, yes. But he then fell asleep.”
Fang Yuan snickered, one hand on his hip and the other brushing his hair back. “Well, if there’s nothing serious, I’m heading home to sleep. You guys continue.”
“See you, Captain,” Fang Yuan waved as he left.
Cheng Ye shrugged, nodding helplessly. When Guo Jiayi woke up, Cheng Ye and Zhang Yibao gave him a stern talking-to once again. Guo Jiayi laughed it off, promising he wouldn’t do it again.
However, within days, Guo Jiayi’s live stream caused two more incidents: once when he forgot to turn it off and viewers heard a child crying, prompting a police call; and another time when he fainted on stream again.
These incidents wore Cheng Ye and his team down. Pei Qinghuai even took a two-day leave to catch up on sleep.
At the station, Fang Yuan slouched in his chair, muttering, “Today is the annual Guo Jiayi live stream. Any bets on what nonsense he’ll pull this time?”
Zhang Yibao sighed, adjusting his glasses. “I hope nothing too ridiculous. I don’t want to run out again.”
“Agreed!” Jiang Fei weakly raised his hand. “Anyone who believes him again is a fool!”
As they neared the end of their shift, Fang Yuan perked up. “What do you guys want to eat? My treat tonight!”
Before Jiang Fei and Chen Xiaonuan could respond, Zhang Yibao enlarged his computer screen, speaking in a calm tone, “Looks like we might not be having that dinner. He’s at it again.”
Fang Yuan glanced at the screen, a pained expression on his face. “It’s surely a fake again. We’ve been fooled too many times.”
Zhang Yibao watched Guo Jiayi’s face intently. “This time, it looks pretty serious.”
“He always looks serious,” Jiang Fei chimed in.
They watched silently as Guo Jiayi, looking unusually flushed, struggled to stand and then collapsed.
“He’s down,” Zhang Yibao turned to Cheng Ye.
“Let’s give it another minute,” Cheng Ye said.
A minute passed, and the chat was filled with insults. Then, suddenly, there was the sound of crying.
It was Guo Xiaofei’s. Cheng Ye and Pei Qinghuai leaned closer to the screen. The camera captured Guo Xiaofei’s head as he cried and pushed at his father’s motionless body, calling out for him.
Even the viewers in the live stream began to show sympathy.
“Shall we go again?” Jiang Fei asked.
Fang Yuan looked at the darkening sky and raised an eyebrow. “Let’s go. I think it’s time to bring him in for a serious talk.”
“Let’s move,” Cheng Ye stood up, looking at Pei Qinghuai. “Are you coming?”
“Yes.”
The residents of Sunshine Community seemed accustomed to the sound of sirens. They gathered and whispered among themselves as the police arrived.
When Guo Xiaofei opened the door, his eyes were swollen, and his light blue shirt was streaked with dark blue tears.
Chen Xiaonuan knelt beside Guo Xiaofei, comforting him while Yan Ya rushed inside. Within seconds, she shouted, “Get him to the hospital!”
The paramedics, startled, rushed in. After a quick examination, the doctor’s face turned serious, and they lifted Guo Jiayi onto a stretcher.
“What happened?” Cheng Ye asked, concerned.
Yan Ya removed her gloves and responded, “Not sure yet, but his heart rate is very weak. We’ll need to wait for the hospital’s report.”
“Seems he really pushed himself too far this time,” Fang Yuan whispered to Jiang Fei.
“What’s wrong with my dad?” Guo Xiaofei tugged at Yan Ya’s sleeve, teary-eyed. Yan Ya, seeing his distress, crouched down and wiped his tears. “Your dad will be fine. He’s just going to the hospital for a check-up.”
She gently rubbed his arm, but as soon as she touched him, Guo Xiaofei flinched, a hint of fear in his eyes.
Sensing something was wrong, Yan Ya kept her tone gentle. “Xiaofei, let me have a look. I promise I won’t hurt you.”
After a moment’s hesitation, Guo Xiaofei let his guard down and moved closer. Yan Ya lifted his shirt, and her brows furrowed deeply.
“Captain Cheng, you need to see this,” Yan Ya called out.
Fang Yuan peeked first, his expression turning to disgust. “Didn’t expect this. Another scumbag.”
Yan Ya lowered Guo Xiaofei’s shirt, her eyes full of sympathy. She gently asked, “Xiaofei, who did this to you?”
Tears welled up in Guo Xiaofei’s eyes again. “I don’t know. I don’t know.”
Seeing him getting agitated, Yan Ya stopped. “It’s okay, you don’t have to say anything. How about we go downstairs and play?”
She smiled reassuringly and led him away, trying to ease his worries.
