HH Chapter 72

Wrapping oneself in a cocoon

“This is the surveillance footage from Sunshine Community on the day Guo Jiayi had the accident,” Zhang Yibao said, enlarging the image. “Yi Qingqing is right there in the crowd. Clearly, she lied about her whereabouts.”

Zhang Yibao’s eyes were resolute. “I called her and her friend. Both insisted Yi Qingqing was at home that day.”

Cheng Ye’s expression darkened. “We’ll split into two teams. Fang Yuan and Chen Xiaonuan, you go to Yi Qingqing’s house. Jiang Fei and Zhang Yibao, go to her friend’s house. I’ll go see Director Zhang for the records.”

“Yes, sir!”

After everyone left, Pei Qinghuai looked at Cheng Ye and asked, “What about me?”

Cheng Ye smiled. “Take a break and wait for them to come back so we can interrogate her.”

Pei Qinghuai nodded and silently opened Minesweeper. Once Cheng Ye left, Pei Qinghuai leaned back in his chair, his hand moving away from the mouse.

His mind kept flashing back to the letters he and Cheng Ye found that time. Was it a joke from the other party? Or a premonition? Since then, everything had returned to normal, like a fallen leaf in a pool of water, creating ripples before settling back into silence.

Pei Qinghuai unlocked his phone, looking at the only photo he had with his sister on the screen. He thought he could vaguely hear someone calling him, but he quickly snapped back to reality. He looked at the photo one last time before turning off his phone and tossing it aside.

Just as he flagged the last mine, Fang Yuan and the team returned with their detainees. Yi Qingqing was brought into the interrogation room, still acting haughty and even rolling her eyes at Zhang Yibao. Once the door closed, Zhang Yibao looked at Cheng Ye with a face full of grievance.

“Captain Cheng, she rolled her eyes at me.”

Cheng Ye chuckled, holding the sorted documents. “Roll your eyes back at her. I believe in you.”

Pei Qinghuai patted Zhang Yibao on the shoulder and followed Cheng Ye into the room. Yi Qingqing yawned and shook her leg, greeting them, “Officers, working late into the night just to trouble us common folk?”

Cheng Ye sneered. “Trouble? We’re suffering along with you.”

He relaxed his posture and leaned forward. “Tell us, why did you lie about Guo Jiayi?”

Yi Qingqing didn’t hold back, dropping a bombshell. “He’s my lover. Even in death, he’s mine.”

In the adjacent room, Chen Xiaonuan frowned and looked at Zhang Yibao in disbelief. “Is she mentally disturbed?” She pointed to her head.

Zhang Yibao shrugged. “We checked. She’s perfectly sane.”

Cheng Ye knocked on the table with his knuckle. “I’m asking why you lied!”

Yi Qingqing leaned back, trying to avoid Cheng Ye’s booming voice. She pouted and blew at her bangs. “Guo Jiayi is mine. I don’t want anyone else to know I love him.” She relaxed her hands. “It’s that simple.”

She raised her head to look at Cheng Ye. “I know what you’re suspecting, and you have reason to. I was indeed at the community that day, but I hadn’t gone up when Guo Jiayi was taken away by the ambulance.”

Pei Qinghuai, looking at Yi Qingqing’s face, asked, “If you love Guo Jiayi so much, why don’t you seem the least bit sad?”
