HH Chapter 76

Wrapping oneself in a cocoon

The two of them got up and were opening the meeting room door when someone almost stumbled in front of them.

“What are you doing!” Cheng Ye stepped back a few steps.

Facing Cheng Ye’s sharp gaze, Fang Yuan, who was at the forefront, quickly restrained his smile, coughed, and stood straight. “Report, Captain Cheng, we weren’t doing anything!”

Cheng Ye squinted his eyes. Just as he was about to say something, Jiang Fei spoke first, “Report, Captain Cheng! We still have unfinished business. We’ll be going now!”

With that, he grabbed Fang Yuan’s hand and started walking away. Pei Qinghuai, standing at the back, leisurely watched the scene unfold. It was hard for him to imagine that the imposing Captain Cheng in front of his team was actually listening to such outdated songs behind their backs.

“Yan Ya, wait a moment,” Cheng Ye called out when he saw Yan Ya.

Yan Ya paused and turned back into the meeting room. “What’s the matter, Captain Cheng?” she asked.

Cheng Ye leaned against the cabinet behind him and spoke softly, “When you took Guo Xiaofei out earlier, did you notice any injuries on him?”

Yan Ya was taken aback by the question. She thought for a moment and said, “I noticed something briefly when I first checked, but later, when I wanted to take a closer look, Guo Xiaofei told me he didn’t want to be examined. I considered it a matter of privacy for a child and didn’t pursue it further.”

After speaking, Yan Ya seemed to catch on to the crucial point. “Did you discover something, Captain Cheng?”

Hearing this, Yan Ya’s breathing became tense. Cheng Ye responded with a soft “hmm,” and she realized she might have made a mistake.

Cheng Ye looked at Yan Ya. “We now suspect that Guo Jiayi’s death might have been caused by Guo Xiaofei.”

“Guo Xiaofei?” Yan Ya’s voice rose slightly, and the others outside could hear her clearly.

Upon hearing this, Zhang Yibao’s fingers started tapping rapidly on the keyboard.

After the initial shock, Yan Ya began to think deeply. Cheng Ye’s suspicion wasn’t unreasonable. She had her doubts initially but wasn’t sure. She looked at the two and spoke.

“Ultimately, red iodine solution, iodine tincture, toilet cleaner, and disinfectant are all toxic when mixed, but they are regulated by the government. Moreover, toilet cleaner and disinfectant need specific conditions to be lethal. These methods seem too immature, like…”

“Like a child’s methods,” Cheng Ye finished her sentence.

“Yes.” Yan Ya unconsciously clasped her hands together.

“If the killer believes these two things killed Guo Jiayi, we can use this to lure the killer out,” Pei Qinghuai suggested, stepping forward.

Cheng Ye and Yan Ya were stunned for a few seconds. Then Cheng Ye’s mind lit up, and he looked at Pei Qinghuai. “Are you saying we should use Guo Jiayi to draw out the killer?”

“Yes,” Pei Qinghuai replied, “But first, we need to convince Guo Jiayi’s parents.”

Cheng Ye said, “Alright, I’ll handle that.”

With that, Cheng Ye walked out of the meeting room. Yan Ya was still standing there, puzzled. She looked at Pei Qinghuai. “What do you mean? I don’t get it.”

Pei Qinghuai smiled slightly and explained, “Didn’t you say that these substances won’t cause poisoning unless under specific conditions? If there’s no poisoning, then Guo Jiayi shouldn’t be dead, right?”

Yan Ya gasped, her eyes widening. “Are you saying to make Guo Jiayi come back to life?”

“Yes.” A gleam flashed in Pei Qinghuai’s eyes. The hidden culprit wouldn’t be able to stay hidden for much longer.
