HH Chapter 77

Wrapping oneself in a cocoon

Cheng Ye acted quickly, and within an hour, he had results. Guo Jiayi’s parents weren’t as difficult to talk to as expected; they just needed a couple of days to process everything.

The next day, Zhang Yibao handed a document to Cheng Ye with a proud expression. “After hearing your discussion in the meeting room yesterday, Chen Xiaonuan and I investigated Guo Xiaofei.”

Cheng Ye glanced up, smiling. “Good job.”

Zhang Yibao, full of pride, said, “Guo Xiaofei has some psychological issues.”

“What do you mean?” Cheng Ye asked, opening the file in his hand. Pei Qinghuai leaned in to take a look as well.

Zhang Yibao pulled out a chair and sat down. “Chen Xiaonuan and I went to his school. His former homeroom teacher said Guo Xiaofei was very reclusive and had violent tendencies.”

He pointed to something in the file. “Here’s a hospital report. Guo Jiayi paid quite a bit in compensation back then.”

“Really!” Fang Yuan leaned in to have a look.

Zhang Yibao shrugged. “We didn’t focus on Guo Xiaofei back then, so we missed this. Also, no one knew why they fought, but surveillance showed that Guo Xiaofei started it.”

“Did you find out why he was expelled?” Cheng Ye turned a page in the document, his gaze tightening. “Unruly behavior, expelled.”

“Yes,” Zhang Yibao replied. “His teacher said, apart from good grades, he was basically a troublemaker. Under pressure from other parents, Guo Jiayi had to transfer him. After Guo Jiayi passed away, no one knew why he stopped attending school.”

Cheng Ye closed the file and looked at Zhang Yibao. “Isn’t there still one person who knows?”

“Guo Xiaofei?” Fang Yuan asked.

Cheng Ye didn’t answer directly but instead seemed more intrigued. “If he hated Guo Jiayi enough to kill him, I want to know why. It’s also possible Guo Jiayi was playing a part.”

Cheng Ye stood up, stretching. “Alright, let’s wait for the news. Everyone can relax for now.”

Fang Yuan’s face lit up. “I’ve been waiting for you to say that, Captain Cheng. I have plans this afternoon, so I’ll be leaving. Bye.”

Before he finished speaking, Fang Yuan dashed out. Cheng Ye wanted to call him back but saw he was already gone. Turning to Pei Qinghuai, he sighed. “Am I not authoritative enough?”

Pei Qinghuai smirked. “Have you ever had authority?”

Cheng Ye looked dejected and slumped back into his chair. Sunlight filtered through the clouds. “Do you think the letters we found were just a coincidence?”

Pei Qinghuai paused, meeting Cheng Ye’s gaze. “I’ve thought about that, but I don’t think it’s that simple.”

He took a deep breath. “From their perspective, an unfinished drama is imperfect, even if they initially targeted my sister.”

Pei Qinghuai’s voice was steady, almost detached. A hint of excitement flashed in his eyes. “Their final act hasn’t taken the stage. They won’t give up easily.”

Cheng Ye didn’t respond, noticing the unusual excitement in Pei Qinghuai, a typically composed person. He chuckled. “You’re part of my team now. We face things together.”

Pei Qinghuai couldn’t help but laugh. “You make it sound like we’re going to die.”

After about a day, Cheng Ye received a call from Guo Jiayi’s parents. They agreed to cooperate with the police. That afternoon, Guo Zhenguo brought Guo Xiaofei to the police station.

Guo Xiaofei, visiting such a place for the first time, hid nervously behind Guo Zhenguo. Yan Ya, ever the kind big sister, gently coaxed him away.

Yan Ya knelt in front of Guo Xiaofei, smiling. “Can I take another look at your injuries? We need to catch the bad guy.”

Guo Xiaofei blinked, looking at her. “Is my dad not dead?”

Yan Ya paused, assessing him. “Those things can’t kill someone.” She pretended to be angry. “Who knows where you got those ideas from. They’re not lethal.”

As Yan Ya examined the injuries on Guo Xiaofei’s arms, she casually asked, “Do you hate your dad?”

Guo Xiaofei’s fists clenched slightly. Sensing this, Yan Ya added, “I won’t tell your dad. We police always keep our word.”

“I don’t hate him,” Guo Xiaofei whispered, his gaze calm.

Yan Ya smiled at him, leading him to the interrogation room door.

Guo Xiaofei asked, “Why am I here? Not with my grandpa?”

Yan Ya explained, “Your grandpa and the others have something to discuss. You wait here.”

Guo Xiaofei sat quietly, lost in thought. Yan Ya closed the door and exhaled deeply.

Looking at Cheng Ye and Pei Qinghuai, she reported, “Most of his injuries are self-inflicted, except for a few uncertain ones. I missed it the first time.”

“That’s okay,” Cheng Ye replied. “Didn’t expect the kid to be so hard on himself.”

Yan Ya glanced at Guo Xiaofei. “He’s very guarded. What will you do next?”

Cheng Ye patted her shoulder. “Don’t worry. Just watch the show.”

As Cheng Ye opened the door, a group eager to watch the show had already gathered. He turned to Pei Qinghuai. “Let’s go.”
