Pei Qinghuai paused the surveillance video and looked at Cheng Ye. “Don’t you think Qin Nan resembles the profile we have of the suspect?”
Cheng Ye thought for a moment. “He does, a bit. But we don’t have any evidence linking him to this case.”
“True,” Pei Qinghuai nodded, frowning deeply. “Let’s focus on finding evidence first.”
Fang Yuan and Jiang Fei split up and went to different malls, but due to the time elapsed, there was hardly any useful information. Finally, under Fang Yuan’s pressure and threats, they managed to retrieve some surveillance footage from the dates on the receipts.
“Thanks,” Fang Yuan said as he sat down, looking at the staff member next to him.
“No problem,” the staff member replied awkwardly. “You go ahead and look. I’ll be busy elsewhere.”
“Alright,” Fang Yuan waved dismissively.
Most of Sun Xiaoyu’s purchases were from high-end brands, and the stores didn’t have many customers, making it easier to review the surveillance footage. Fang Yuan quickly fast-forwarded the footage and saw a man and a woman holding hands enter a store. He paused the video and zoomed in.
“Qin… Nan?!”
Fang Yuan exclaimed in confusion and continued watching. Sun Xiaoyu seemed unwilling, as if it was Qin Nan who wanted to enter the store. Ultimately, it was Qin Nan who paid for the purchases.
The subsequent videos showed the same pattern. Sun Xiaoyu appeared visibly impatient but followed Qin Nan, seemingly not wanting to upset him.
After copying the videos, Fang Yuan hurried to the next mall to confirm his suspicion. Before he could get there, Jiang Fei called him excitedly.
“Fang Yuan!” Jiang Fei shouted. “Guess who I saw on the surveillance footage?”
“Qin Nan,” Fang Yuan replied, rubbing his ear which Jiang Fei’s shouting had irritated.
“How did you know?” Jiang Fei asked reflexively, then quickly added, “Should we report this now?”
“Yes, I’m going to check more footage,” Fang Yuan said, hanging up.
With the information from Fang Yuan and Jiang Fei, the police summoned Qin Nan that afternoon. Qin Nan cooperated, showing a willingness to assist the police.
Fang Yuan followed closely behind, whispering, “I have to admit, he looks better in person than in the photos.”
Chen Xiaonuan scoffed, “What does that matter? He’s still two-timing. Those boys and girls’ romantic fantasies about him are about to be shattered. He’s just a jerk.”
In the interrogation room, Qin Nan sat calmly, facing Jiang Fei and Fang Yuan. Fang Yuan pushed some photos across the table. “Do you know Sun Xiaoyu?”
Qin Nan didn’t hesitate. “Yes, we’re just friends.”
“Friends?” Fang Yuan frowned. “Then why did Sun Xiaoyu’s friends say you were in a romantic relationship?”
Qin Nan smiled faintly. “They must have misunderstood.”
Fang Yuan felt a surge of anger but restrained himself. “So, as ‘just friends,’ you held hands while shopping and bought a bunch of cosmetics together?”
He turned the laptop to face Qin Nan. Though Qin Nan’s expression remained largely unchanged, there was a brief moment where his face stiffened.
Qin Nan adjusted his glasses and said, “So, Officer, what are you trying to imply? That I was cheating?”
