“Just like someone opened the door only after getting permission,” Pei Qinghuai rubbed his index finger. “I guess Tang Jiale is waiting for Qin Nan’s reply, but what she doesn’t know is that Qin Nan is still being held at the station, which is why she’s been so nervous from the start.”
“Like a little dog without its owner’s command, encountering a stranger alone, that kind of nervousness,” Pei Qinghuai continued talking to himself.
Pei Qinghuai turned back to look at Cheng Ye, who was listening intently. “However, even a dog will jump over a wall when it’s desperate, let alone a person. Sun Xiaoyu might be the key to solving our case. When someone gets desperate, they tend to reveal their flaws.”
Back at the station, Qin Nan had already been released, but it was a long-term strategy to catch a big fish. Since the surveillance footage didn’t reveal anything, they would start from the connection between Qin Nan and Sun Xiaoyu.
From the beginning, there were five missing girls. Among them, Sun Xiaoyu and Li Yixin were both from the new Fifth District. Sun Xiaoyu went missing on July 10th, while Li Yixin went missing on July 22nd. Eliminating irrelevant factors, everyone’s attention was focused on Li Yixin.
After three days of investigation, they finally found a trace of someone under an inconspicuous surveillance camera. Zhang Yibao, with dark circles under his eyes, pointed at a corner of the surveillance footage while holding a computer.
“This car is identical to Qin Nan’s model. Following this lead, we captured the license plate on Xihua Avenue. After verification, it was indeed Qin Nan’s car, and the first place it appeared and parked was not far from Li Yixin’s tutoring school,” Zhang Yibao yawned. “The date was July 18th.”
Then, Zhang Yibao sat down on a chair, looking disappointed and dejected. “But we checked all the surveillance footage from July 22nd and didn’t find Qin Nan’s car. The trail ends here…” He leaned back in his chair.
Everyone’s tense nerves seemed to snap at that moment. Although they could trace Qin Nan to those locations, the timelines didn’t match the crime times. They also investigated Tang Jiale without finding any issues. After going through an enormous amount of surveillance footage, everyone’s spirits were crushed, and they sat quietly at their desks without speaking.
The public outcry was escalating rapidly. Some family members came to the station entrance multiple times, crying and complaining, and the pressure from both sides caused the case to come to a standstill. Despite closely monitoring Tang Jiale and Qin Nan for days, the police still had no progress.
Until the night of August 4th, Zhang Yibao suddenly slapped the table, waking up everyone around him who had just closed their eyes. Fang Yuan yawned and asked, “What’s up?”
“I found a new clue.” Zhang Yibao stood up from his chair, patting the people around him. “Don’t sleep, come and see!”
A minute later, Cheng Ye, Pei Qinghuai, Chen Xiaonuan, Fang Yuan, and others surrounded Zhang Yibao. Jiang Fei, with one hand on Zhang Yibao’s shoulder, yawned as he asked, “What did you find?”
Zhang Yibao split the screen into three sections and said, “Let’s not talk about the first three disappearance cases for now. I figured that the perpetrator would be cautious at the beginning but might relax after seeing that the police couldn’t catch them. So I focused on the last two cases, Wu Xie and Li Yixin.”
Zhang Yibao continued, “On the days these two disappeared, the same black car appeared in the surveillance footage. Since it was nighttime, it was a bit harder to trace. As I followed this lead, I found out that this car had fake license plates.”
