“But it headed towards the outskirts, and beyond that are old villages with no surveillance,” Zhang Yibao said, his expression falling again. Cheng Ye comforted him, “This is still a major breakthrough.” He looked at the video. “Did you check the previous cases? Did you find any trace of this car?”
Zhang Yibao shook his head. “This car only appeared starting with Wu Xie’s case. It wasn’t present in the first three cases.” Suddenly, Zhang Yibao seemed to remember something and quickly started working on the computer. “I almost forgot an important point. Although we didn’t find that car in the first three cases, my colleagues and I discovered that in the days or week leading up to each case, Qin Nan was seen in the vicinity.”
He continued, “The only difference now is that out of all these girls, Qin Nan had contact only with Sun Xiaoyu, but that might not be significant.”
Cheng Ye frowned. “Regardless, we’ve made significant progress. Continue tracking the car’s movements.”
“Got it,” Zhang Yibao replied.
As the crowd dispersed and Cheng Ye was about to leave, he noticed Pei Qinghuai standing still with a grave expression, his face unusually pale.
“What’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell?” Cheng Ye moved to support him, but Pei Qinghuai pushed him away.
Realizing his behavior, Pei Qinghuai quickly turned around and forced a smile. “It’s nothing, just reminded me of something unpleasant.”
“What?” Cheng Ye asked, seeing his teammates busy again, his eyebrows knitting together.
Pei Qinghuai suppressed the unease in his heart. He felt like he was plunged into an icy abyss, his limbs numb as if cut by icy blades.
“I recognize the car that Zhang Yibao found,” Pei Qinghuai said quietly, his voice tinged with a strange mixture of surprise and dread.
Cheng Ye sensed something was wrong and lowered his voice. “Is it related to the old letter case?”
Pei Qinghuai nodded. “I remember that car well. It was one of the vehicles they used with fake plates back then. During the operation to capture them, one officer was killed, and another was nearly crushed to death.”
His eyes were vacant, and he forced a bitter smile. “Do you know why I’m so familiar with it? I was the one who was almost crushed. I still can’t breathe when I think about it.”
Pei Qinghuai clenched his fists, anger rising in his eyes. “Cheng Ye,” he sought an answer, “do you think it’s just a coincidence, or has it started again?”
Cheng Ye remained silent. He knew the implications if it was more than just a disappearance case. If it was connected to the old letter case, those girls were likely in grave danger.
Pei Qinghuai slowly released his tight grip, calming himself. “If we consider their mindset, this car with fake plates was deliberately exposed to us. In this disappearance case, if they didn’t want to be found, we wouldn’t have discovered this clue so quickly.”
“They’re getting bored,” Pei Qinghuai bit his lip until it bled.
‘Getting bored’ was an understatement for them. To them, their prey were like doomed ants, to be toyed with at will. Human lives were nothing more than jokes in their conversations.
“What about Qin Nan?” Cheng Ye’s cold voice interrupted Pei Qinghuai’s thoughts.
