HWMK Chapter 7

Chapter 7

Translator: Lynn

Amidst the warm summer night, a gentle breeze swept through. The window was ajar, causing the white lace curtains to flutter like delicate wings.

A vinyl record player softly emitted romantic melodies, while Ji Kai led the way, guiding his partner in a slow dance within the diffused candlelight shadows.

Although Zhu Ling had never received formal dance training, he possessed a natural talent for moving to the rhythm. In fact, he had even made an appearance on a Dancing with the Stars show, garnering a legion of fans. On the other hand, Ji Kai wasn’t particularly skilled at dancing. After a few moments of twirling, his true intentions were revealed—he gradually cornered his lover, their heated skin pressed together, his eyes aflame with an undeniable desire.

Amidst the breathtaking atmosphere, akin to a beauty in bloom, the air was charged with the anticipation of an intimate celebration.

Yet, at this very moment, Zhu Ling’s cell phone broke the serenity with an unexpected ring.

Displaying an unfamiliar number, Ji Kai was gazing at Zhu Ling with an adoring and affectionate gaze. There was nowhere for the fleeting tension and panic within the other’s eyes to hide.

The ringtone began the prelude to the tender song “Dear,” coinciding ironically with Zhu Ling’s anxious expression as he answered, his demeanor took on a sour twist.

The caller was persistent, not relenting.

Glancing at Ji Kai from the corner of his eye, Zhu Ling’s hands trembled. Eventually, he had no choice but to answer: “Hello? I’m busy right now, what’s the matter for tomorrow…”

“… Slow down! Calm down! Don’t cry!

“Did he hit you? Why did he hit you? Where does it hurt? Are you badly injured?”

“Xiao Yin, take a deep breath! Where are you? Don’t move, don’t make impulsive decisions. Just stay where you are, and I’ll be there soon!”

The darkness of the night grew deeper, and a sudden chill seemed to herald the approach of winter.

…He referred to him as “Xiao Yin.”

Hadn’t it been a while since they last crossed paths?

Wasn’t it true that despite both being part of the same industry, they had been “out of touch” for quite some time?

Zhu Ling ended the call and swiftly took his coat off the rack. The high-end jacket was adorned with diamonds, shimmering brilliantly in the darkness of the night.

This person… always manages to have a touch of sparkle about him.

Ji Kai closed his eyes, wishing he were truly a bear capable of hibernating. That way, he could shut off his senses and retreat from the world, eliminating the sights and sounds that troubled him.

A soft thud reverberated as Zhu Ling’s long legs stepped against the door frame.

The 1.8-meter tall figure exuded an aura of authority, standing tall with his arms casually folded, effectively barricading the entrance.

“On our wedding anniversary, where are you off to in the middle of the night?”

“Brother Kai,” Zhu Ling’s forehead was beaded with cold sweat, “I… have an urgent matter to attend to. Please stay home and wait for me obediently. I’ll be back as soon as I can!”

Ji Kai’s expression took on a tinge of slyness. His gaze darkened as he spoke with resolve.

“No, that’s not going to work.”

No, you’re not allowed to go anywhere.

On our wedding anniversary, with just one phone call, you’re out there chasing after some random guy. Are you trying to turn our world upside down?

“Baby bear, I know it’s my fault! But really… don’t give me a hard time today, okay? It’s an exceptional circumstance! I promise to handle it and come back soon. I won’t keep you waiting for too long.”

“Exceptional? Then tell me, what’s so exceptional?”

“Brother Kai…”

“Ye Yin got beaten, didn’t he? Just tell me, I’ve overheard everything.”

In a sudden panic, Zhu Ling couldn’t find his words.

“Brother Kai, please try to understand. Ye Yin might be seriously hurt. I need to go check on him!” He reached for the doorknob, but Ji Kai pushed it closed, saying, “Even if he got into a fight, what’s it to you?”

“…”

“Who is he to you?”

“Brother Kai… No! It’s not what you’re thinking! There’s nothing between Ye Yin and me, but I can’t just ignore this situation. I’m leaving now, and I’ll explain everything to you later!” Ji Kai fell silent, nodding and stepping aside to let him pass.

Zhu Ling quickly opened the door, but then he heard an odd noise from behind. He turned and saw Ji Kai successfully pulling out the watermelon knife that had been stuck in the table for days, a feat he hadn’t managed to achieve before.

What kind of strange natural strength was this?

“Ji Kai, what are you doing? Just calm down!”

A knife was pressed coldly against Zhu Ling’s neck, its touch too sharp.

Knowing how unpredictable and intense the man before him could be, Zhu Ling felt a shiver down his spine, leaving him stuttering and unable to speak.

“Take me with you.”

Ji Kai’s smile was casual and mischievous—after all, he was holding the watermelon knife against Zhu Ling’s neck.

“If you want me to understand, then take me along to see him.”

“Brother Kai! I’ve explained everything… please don’t make this difficult for me. I really will be back soon!”

Ji Kai’s smile persisted as he firmly stood his ground. “Today, it’s either you take me to meet this ‘goblin,’ or we end things here. If you dare to step out that door without me, you won’t be coming back to this house, and I won’t… foolishly wait for you to return.”

Zhu Ling’s expression abruptly changed.

His lips quivered, and a mix of shock and hurt flashed across his eyes, portraying himself as the innocent party in this situation.

“Brother Kai, please don’t be angry. Don’t say things like that. I feel really uncomfortable when you talk like that.” His voice softened, laced with a hint of cautious flattery. He was used to singing, broadcasting, and even recording sweet morning ringtones for his female fans, but his tone was never this gentle and tender, as if he was afraid to startle a rare and cherished creature.

The man holding the knife showed no emotion, but his brow furrowed in thought.

Ji Kai leisurely pulled out a cigarette from his pocket with his free hand, lit it with practiced ease, and took a few puffs with a contemplative look.

“Your lovely friend experienced some domestic turmoil, right?”

“Haha, I wonder which is scarier—my way with a kitchen knife or his predicament?”

“Zhu Ling, Zhu Ling! Woooo…”

Upon spotting the familiar silver-gray Mercedes-Benz SLK slowly parking on the roadside, the young man who had been sobbing on the steps in the night wind stood up, wiping his tears and snot, and rushed into Zhu Ling’s arms.

“He’s terrifying! Li Weidu is genuinely terrifying! Take me away, please! I can’t bear to stay in that house any longer!” Ji Kai looked up from the car window, and an imposing building stood nearby, radiating its brilliance in the night.

The location was, indeed, impressive!

It was right outside a renowned luxury couple-themed hotel building in the city!

Ha ha ha ha ha. After being mistreated at home, he chose to sob by the roadside. The timing, place, and people couldn’t have aligned more perfectly—it’s utterly astonishing!

Unconvinced, Ji Kai exited the car from the other side, slamming the door with force.

He shot his partner a stern look, then took the short, slight young man out of Zhu Ling’s embrace.

“What are you doing? Are you a seven-year-old?”

Ye Yin had never anticipated that someone from Zhu Ling’s family would show up as well, and his expression turned especially pitiful.

“Let me see, where are you hurt?” Ji Kai continued to smile, a grin bordering on laughter, as he examined the young man’s arm thoroughly. “Aren’t you supposed to be covered in bruises and purple marks after domestic violence? Your nose should be crooked and your face swollen. But all I see is a tear-streaked face! So, did your internal injuries heal quickly due to this family’s violence? Impressive! Is your boyfriend a martial arts master?”

“Let go! It’s hurting me! You’re hurting me! Zhu Ling, Zhu Ling, help me!”

“Ji Kai! Let him go!”

Ji Kai released his grip, and Ye Yin’s eyes welled up with tears, his expression a mix of distress and frustration. He sniffled, clung to Zhu Ling’s arm, and focused on wiping away his tears. However, where Ji Kai had grabbed his arm moments before, a series of deep purple marks remained a rather unexpected outcome.

Unbelievable! This was a natural-born porcelain toucher!

Ji Kai almost felt like he should be apologizing to Ye Yin on his knees.

Curses…he barely exerted any force a moment ago! If Ye Yin had merely raised his arm for inspection, would he have been wrongly identified as the aggressor?

“Xiao Yin, calm down, don’t cry. Are you okay? Don’t be afraid. Quickly tell me, what did Li Weidu do to you?”

Speaking at the right moment, Ye Yin continued, “It’s just as you guessed. I wanted to break up with him, but he immediately lost control when he heard that—shouting, throwing things around, trapping me in the room, and locking the door. He even tried to snatch my phone when I attempted to call someone. Waaah, waaah…”

“Zhu Ling, Zhu Ling, I’m really frightened. Li Weidu, his behavior is completely abnormal!” “He inherited a violent streak from his family! If I continue being with him, he’ll eventually kill me!”

Every time Zhu Ling heard these words, his eyebrows furrowed deeper, and his expression grew more somber.

However, Ji Kai stood beside them with his arms crossed and eyebrows raised, finding the situation rather refreshing. To him, the wind was light, his ears perked up, and he felt invigorated.

…It’s evident that serving that self-righteous, zombie-faced, psychotic local tyrant is no simple task.

Ye Yin’s life as a “rich and wealthy” little beauty might not be as carefree and enjoyable as Ji Kai had imagined—filled with endless eating, shopping, and indulgence every day.

Indeed!
