IBPASMA Chapter 2

How did I unexpectedly end up in such a miserable state?

Yan Yijia still had to go back to celebrate her anniversary. She watched Gu Qingtong finish the bowl of chicken soup, then cut an apple for her to eat. Only then did she leave with the thermos container in her hand.

Just as she sent her best friend off, Gu Qingtong received an inquiry from the hospital’s front desk through her pager.

“Miss Gu, just now, Miss Yan Chi’s butler called to make an appointment to visit your ward this afternoon. Can you confirm if this is true? We can handle the appointment here.”

This hospital was a well-known private hospital in City A, with expensive fees, catering to high-profile celebrities who had high requirements for safety and privacy. Therefore, besides the patient’s family members who could enter and exit the hospital ward with their cards, other visitors could only make appointments in advance.

Gu Qingtong was certainly not unfamiliar with the name Yan Chi.

After all, Yan Chi had debuted 14 years ago and became a top actress who had taken the Chinese film industry by storm.

Although she kept a low profile and rarely appeared in the public eye, this one and only Grand Slam Best Actress in the Chinese film industry always stirred up a storm whenever she made an appearance.

Yan Chi debuted early, in an era before the concept of popularity existed, and she had gained countless fans.

Now, after so many years had passed, the just 30-year-old Yan Chi had become the “respected artist with both virtue and talent,” referred to as Teacher Yan by many. Her fan base had only grown larger, even more terrifying than many top idols who debuted through talent shows.

Her fans led their own lives on a daily basis, but once Yan Chi’s new movie was released or when it was confirmed that she would attend a film festival, they would suddenly be revitalized.

The new generation of actors in the entertainment industry were almost all fans of Yan Chi.

When they appeared on programs for interviews, they always liked to shower praise on Teacher Yan, and some even boldly claimed that they had decided to pursue acting because of her.

Due to the intentional secrecy surrounding the Yan family, fans were not clear about Yan Chi’s specific background, but the rich second-generation circle had no more knowledge about her than the fans did.

After all, Yan Chi’s excellence and perfection were like a rare flower in the high mountains.

For Gu Qingtong, a typical naive third-generation wealthy individual, Yan Chi was “someone else’s child” that she could only hope to reach.

She had never mentioned to others that she secretly paid attention to Yan Chi.

Upon hearing this name, Gu Qingtong felt a moment of confusion and felt like she was dreaming. It took her a while to react and realize that Yan Chi was Yan Song’s half-sister from the same father.

The only intersection between herself and Yan Chi seemed to be Yan Song.

Doubts arose in Gu Qingtong’s mind. She and Yan Chi were not really familiar. After confirming the marriage alliance with Yan Song, she had never had any contact with Yan Chi.

She even attended the Yan family banquet last week, where even distant relatives like Yan Yijia, who only had the surname “Yan” in common, were present, but she didn’t see Yan Chi.

However, if it wasn’t for the annulment matter, Gu Qingtong couldn’t think of anything special about herself that would attract the rare flower to come and visit her.

“It’s true. They can come directly when the time comes,” Gu Qingtong replied to the front desk before finally turning on her phone, which had been shut down for a long time.

A row of missed calls eagerly popped up, some familiar and some unfamiliar, but Gu Qingtong didn’t pay attention to them and went straight to the message interface.

As expected, a message received thirty minutes ago caught Gu Qingtong’s attention.

“Miss Gu, hello, I am Yan Chi’s butler. I heard about your car accident and wanted to come and visit you, as well as discuss the marriage alliance between Gu and Yan. I wonder if it’s convenient this afternoon.”

Upon seeing this message, Gu Qingtong’s expectations vanished instantly.

She hadn’t expected that her first formal meeting with Yan Chi would be under such circumstances. Moreover, the other party was likely to be a reinforcement brought by Yan Song, coming to persuade her to continue with the marriage alliance…

“Okay,” Gu Qingtong replied with a lack of enthusiasm, typing just two words before tossing her phone aside.

At this moment, there was a knock on the door.

Why was it so fast?

Thinking that it was Yan Chi, Gu Qingtong shouted, “Coming.” Then she got out of bed and put on her shoes to open the door.

However, to her surprise, when she opened the door, she saw a man she knew.

In that instant of recognizing who it was, Gu Qingtong realized she should close the door.

But it was already too late. A hand reached out, blocking the door forcefully.

“Qingtong, what are you doing? I heard about your car accident and came here specially to visit you. You wouldn’t be unwelcoming, would you?” Yan Song’s face carried a perfectly placed smile, looking even more refined under his glasses.

Gu Qingtong’s strength was clearly no match for an adult male. She soon gave in and released the doorknob.

She stood at the door warily and glanced at the surveillance camera outside the door. “How did you come up?”

She lived in the top VIP ward, heavily guarded, and it was impossible for Yan Song to sneak up without notice.

Obviously, Yan Song had panicked upon receiving Gu Qingtong’s message about calling off the marriage. Although he didn’t know how his absent-minded and indifferent fiancée had discovered those things, he knew that once Gu Qingtong refused to marry him, he would never be able to secure the new joint projects between the Gu and Yan families.

If he missed this opportunity, the possibility of entering the Yan family’s business in the future would be extremely slim.

He distanced himself from his parents and ingratiate himself with the main branch of the Yan family, becoming their lackey for several years in front of Grandfather Yan and Yan Chi, just to wait for this marriage opportunity.

Because of that, Yan Song could only keep his lover hidden by his side and marry the spoiled miss from the Gu family, whom he had despised since childhood.

But just when success was within reach, everything fell apart.

A single word from the miss could instantly shatter the trust he had painstakingly built over the five years with the Yan family.

He absolutely could not let this happen.

Yan Song was sure that Gu Qingtong wouldn’t immediately inform the Gu family about calling off the marriage, so he pretended that nothing had happened and obtained the information about Gu Qingtong’s hospital ward from the secretary of the Gu family.

Although it was difficult to enter the VIP ward, this hospital was coincidentally owned by the father of his bad friends.

Yan Song held flowers and appeared presentable. He went straight to the front desk and provided Gu Qingtong’s name and room number, claiming to be her fiancé. He said he wanted to surprise Gu Qingtong and quietly visit her.

Every detail of the information was accurate, and with the hospital chairman’s son vouching for him, the security naturally allowed him in.

Yan Song, of course, avoided discussing these details. “Why are you standing at the door? Let’s go inside the ward first.”

Saying that, he walked in on his own and calmly looked at Gu Qingtong.

“I have nothing to say to you. Even if I don’t want those shares, I would never marry someone like you. You better leave now, or I’ll call the security.”

Gu Qingtong’s voice lacked the liveliness and playfulness usually present. She displayed her anger, her hand clenched into a fist by her side.

Seeing that Gu Qingtong showed no intention of negotiating peacefully, Yan Song decided not to pretend anymore.

He chuckled meaningfully and said, “We were supposed to have a family alliance, each doing our own thing, right? I didn’t expect Miss Gu to be so easily upset. Are you perhaps developing some feelings for me upon hearing about my girlfriend?”

This statement hit Gu Qingtong’s nerve precisely, and she became furious in an instant, her words filled with scorn.

“You arrogant piece of trash, do you think I would like you?! Have you taken a good look at yourself? Please, it’s you who begged for this marriage alliance. After all, your qualification to enter the Yan family now depends on me lifting you up!

Before, I was eager to obtain the shares and didn’t care whether the marriage partner was a cat or a dog. Do you really think highly of yourself just because I don’t despise you? Any of this evidence would be enough for you to be publicly shamed in front of my grandfather.”

Although Gu Qingtong’s reputation as a spoiled rich girl wasn’t particularly good, and she hadn’t achieved much in the entertainment industry, she was still the legitimate heiress of the Gu family.

Yan Song was completely exposed without mercy, and his smile vanished instantly, his eyes revealing a hint of hostility.

But he looked at Gu Qingtong standing at the door and knew it wasn’t the right time. He suppressed his anger.

“If you don’t like me, why are you in such a hurry? After our alliance, we’ll be like everyone else, in a relationship that exists only in name. Isn’t it beneficial for both of us to profit from it?”

“Well, I refuse. This is how I am, Gu Qingtong. It’s more painful for me to see an idiot like you making money than to lose money myself. Where’s the fun in watching you be frustrated to death over the shares?” Gu Qingtong sneered, sarcastic and strange in her tone.

If she couldn’t win in verbal battles, it would be a shame to her reputation as a spoiled and arrogant person.

Yan Song’s face turned red, instantly infuriated.

Ignoring the fact that the door was still open, he threw the flowers he was holding on the ground and walked a few steps to stand in front of Gu Qingtong. He grabbed her arm and pulled her towards the hospital room, intending to close the door.

Even if the cameras captured everything, he could ask a friend for help again.

He bet that no one would appear in the hallway, and as it turned out, he was right.

Yan Song had made all the necessary preparations before coming, including some unconventional and even illegal methods.

Since Gu Qingtong was a celebrity, he would take some compromising photos to use as a threat.

He had burned his bridges and had nothing to lose. This marriage alliance couldn’t tolerate her opposition.

Gu Qingtong’s mouth was tightly covered by Yan Song, and he dragged her into the hospital room.

In the struggle, her head hit the door again, causing a sharp pain that nearly made her black out momentarily. Tears welled up in her eyes instinctively.

She forced herself to calm down and quickly scanned the surroundings for anything that could help her escape.

There it was!

Yan Yijia knew that Gu Qingtong didn’t like eating whole fruits, so she had brought a portable Swiss army knife with her when she came earlier. After cutting the apple, she left the knife on the table.

Sure enough, Gu Qingtong spotted the knife on the table from a distance and remembered its location.

She pretended to be physically weak, and when Yan Song dragged her near the table, she viciously bit down on his finger. But this was just a distraction to draw his attention while she reached for the knife on the table based on her memory. Without any hesitation, she fiercely stabbed towards Yan Song’s hand that was holding her.

Yan Song’s pupils dilated in shock, and he let out a scream, forgetting about Gu Qingtong momentarily as he urgently checked his own injury.

Gu Qingtong tightly held onto the knife, seized the opportunity, and quickly rushed out.

She had indeed been careless before. Gu Qingtong hadn’t expected this lunatic to actually attack her in the monitored corridor.

But now was not the time for lingering fear.

Seeing her escape, Yan Song knew the consequences would be unimaginable. He covered his wound and hurriedly chased after her.

To ensure absolute privacy and a quiet environment in the VIP ward, there wasn’t even a nurse station on the top floor. And with the commotion that just occurred, no other patients from the nearby rooms came out. Gu Qingtong could only rush downstairs desperately.

Hearing the footsteps behind her growing closer, Gu Qingtong turned a corner towards the staircase while glancing back.

However, because she wasn’t looking ahead, she collided into someone.

She heard a muffled grunt from the other person, but they managed to steady her.

“Help … help me!”

Sensing the source of safety, Gu Qingtong, who had been trying to be strong just moments ago, suddenly clung to this lifeline. Tears that had been swirling in her eyes for a long time suddenly fell.

In her tear-blurred vision, she couldn’t make out the face of the woman in front of her.

But she could hear the familiar yet distant voice, cold and mature, that she had only heard in movies. The voice sighed softly, and the ice-cold palm touched her blood-stained hand.

“How did you end up in such a miserable state?”
