Looking through the slits of the blinds, Chi Suinian could clearly see the crowd of onlookers outside. Being watched was an unpleasant feeling, especially in such an embarrassing position.
Gritting his teeth, Chi Suinian whispered angrily, “Are you done yet?!”
“Nope,” Lu Zhiyue, still restraining his body, replied stubbornly, “You’re giving me an explanation today.”
“You’re a grown man, can’t you stop being so naggy?”
“Even grown men are human,” Lu Zhiyue raised an eyebrow and said, “You used me and dumped me. Can’t I at least demand an explanation?”
Fine.
You win.
Chi Suinian’s eyes burned red with frustration. He was furious—furious at Lu Zhiyue’s shamelessness and even more at his own foolishness. How could he have been so stubbornly obsessed with someone he disliked, to the point of chasing after him and even getting a marriage certificate? It was madness.
His chest heaved as a nerve in his brain throbbed intensely. He gritted his teeth and said, word by word, “Clinging to the past like this is pretty pointless, don’t you think? I have amnesia, and it looks like I won’t recover those memories. You should just forget about the past, as if it never happened. Stop acting like some bitter woman and save yourself the trouble.”
It was a textbook jerk move.
After saying it, Chi Suinian fell silent and reflected on his words. Yep, infuriating, cutting, and cruel—perfect.
But he still underestimated Lu Zhiyue’s ability to provoke.
“Three months ago, we were still sharing a bed. Amazing how you’ve already moved on. You really are heartless.”
“…”
The lost memories were a stain Chi Suinian could never erase. He tried to ignore and forget them, but Lu Zhiyue repeatedly dragged them into the open, taunting him. The incessant provocation made his head throb.
Furious, Chi Suinian shoved the man in front of him away. “Say one more word, and I’ll tear your mouth off!”
After cursing, Chi Suinian straightened his posture and loosened the collar of his shirt, finally feeling a bit relieved.
But after the confrontation, the room suddenly felt stiflingly hot.
Fanning himself with his collar, his pale skin and defined collarbones flickered in and out of view with his movements, especially striking under the light.
Lu Zhiyue’s gaze deepened. “Fix your clothes.”
Chi Suinian froze for a moment, then deliberately exaggerated his movements. He shot Lu Zhiyue a mocking look. “You’re so nosy. Why not go downstairs and work security instead?”
Lu Zhiyue raised an eyebrow, completely unfazed by the insult. Bending down, he picked up the crumpled contract from the floor and the broken pen from Chi Suinian’s hand, tossing them both into the trash can.
Chi Suinian raised his eyebrows. “What gives you the right to throw my stuff away?”
Without the funding, the contract was as good as useless and would end up in the trash sooner or later.
But watching Lu Zhiyue discard his things so casually still annoyed him.
Who did this guy think he was?
“You don’t need to sign the contract,” Lu Zhiyue said as he raised an eyebrow. “I’ll transfer the funds to your company’s account tomorrow.”
Chi Suinian froze. “Why would you be so generous?”
Was this another scheme?
Lu Zhiyue replied, “You’re my legal spouse. If your company has a problem, it’s my duty to help.”
Chi Suinian let out a cold snort. “No one else is around—why are you putting on this act of deep devotion?”
Lu Zhiyue glanced at him. “No act. I just want to make amends with a certain heartless jerk.”
Chi Suinian: “…”
Unfortunately, the “jerk” had no interest in redemption and rolled his eyes, treating Lu Zhiyue’s words as nonsense.
At that moment, there was a knock at the lounge door. The gentle voice of a female assistant called from outside, “Mr. Lu, Ms. Zhao Yuanmin is here. She insists on waiting for you in the reception room and refuses to leave.”
Lu Zhiyue’s usual cold expression briefly flashed with sharpness. Though fleeting, Chi Suinian caught it.
He didn’t delve into it, though. Lu Zhiyue’s emotions were none of his concern. He was more intrigued by the assistant’s words.
Lu Zhiyue seemed very reactive to this particular lady.
Could she be one of his past flings coming to demand accountability?
Chi Suinian found it amusing. Just moments ago, this man had been calling him a jerk, and now it looked like Lu Zhiyue was the heartless one with someone at the door confronting him. Ironic.
As he mused, Lu Zhiyue suddenly turned to him. “Do me a favor.”
Chi Suinian: “?”
Before he could react, Lu Zhiyue grabbed his wrist and pulled him out of the room.
The moment the lounge door opened, the office area fell silent. The employees quickly returned to their workstations, typing away on keyboards with synchronized keystrokes. However, their eyes darted over their monitors to sneak peeks at the two.
When they noticed their intertwined hands, the sound of collective gasps filled the air.
“…”
Chi Suinian twisted his wrist free and snorted, “Stop holding hands and think about your reputation.”
Lu Zhiyue raised an eyebrow, surprised. Chi Suinian actually cared about appearances?
—
In the reception room, a well-dressed girl had already finished two cups of coffee and a can of soda, yet the person she was waiting for still hadn’t shown up.
She glanced at her watch, unable to sit still any longer. After stomping her foot, she stood up, intending to wait in the executive office instead.
Unexpectedly, just as she turned around, the door opened, and Lu Zhiyue entered. Her eyes lit up, and she greeted him with a bright smile. “Brother Zhiyue!”
The girl’s tone was sweet, her voice lilting at the end.
Chi Suinian instinctively looked around and spotted a petite, well-dressed young woman with soft curls, a delicate figure, and a warm smile.
He didn’t recognize her but lingered on her a bit longer because of Lu Zhiyue’s earlier reaction.
“What are you doing here?” Lu Zhiyue took a step back, subtly creating distance between them.
Zhao Yuanmin lowered her head shyly. “I came with my brother. I wanted to see you. Are you free tonight? I’d like to treat you to dinner.”
“Sorry, I’m very busy today,” Lu Zhiyue replied firmly, his expression unchanged. “If there’s nothing urgent, you should head back.”
“Why?” Zhao Yuanmin’s smile stiffened, her tone dropping a few notches. “…I’m not interrupting your work.”
Her eyes flicked toward Chi Suinian, who was watching the scene with disinterest. Zhao Yuanmin’s almond-shaped eyes widened. “Who is he?”
It was then that Chi Suinian got a clear look at her face. His gaze paused. What a small world. He recognized Zhao Yuanmin after all.
To say he recognized her wasn’t entirely accurate—they’d only met once. Rather, Chi Suinian had seen her before, but she probably didn’t know him.
It had been at a birthday party at a bar. She had been clinging to his cousin, dressed in an exquisite gown with an innocent, radiant smile.
Zhao Yuanmin looked very different now, with heavy makeup, which was why Chi Suinian hadn’t immediately recognized her. But now, the memory clicked as she walked closer.
Chi Suinian remembered Lu Heng bragging about spending lavishly on Zhao Yuanmin but failing to win her over because his brother had stolen the spotlight.
And now, here she was, cozying up to Lu Zhiyue.
Quite the opportunist.
For some reason, Chi Suinian sensed a hint of hostility in Zhao Yuanmin’s gaze as she looked at him. Her brows furrowed, and her dark eyes bore into him.
Chi Suinian nearly laughed out loud. Did this girl direct her glare at the wrong person? The heartbreaker is standing right next to me.
“Brother Zhiyue, is he your assistant?” Zhao Yuanmin turned back to Lu Zhiyue when she got no response.
Women’s intuition was often irrational, and the alarm bells in Zhao Yuanmin’s mind had been ringing the moment she saw Chi Suinian.
Bored, Chi Suinian sighed. He’d figured out Lu Zhiyue’s ploy—it was obvious he’d brought him here as a shield.
But it wasn’t a proud thing to admit, nor was it fun to play along. Chi Suinian didn’t want to waste his time, so he said, “You’re busy. I’ll leave.”
Unexpectedly, Lu Zhiyue stopped him. “Are you mad?”
Chi Suinian frowned, puzzled. “Why would I be mad?”
“Then why are you leaving?”
“Do I look like your shadow? Why should I follow you around?”
Realizing something, Chi Suinian corrected himself, “Why should I report my movements to you? Move.”
As long as he wasn’t angry, that was fine.
Relieved, Lu Zhiyue said, “Then wait for me in my office.”
Chi Suinian suspected he’d misheard. “Wait for you? Why?”
“To go home together tonight,” Lu Zhiyue replied matter-of-factly.
“Are you a preschooler? Do you need someone to walk you home?” Clicking his tongue, Chi Suinian slammed the door behind him and left.
