“Say that again?”
Chi Suinian was not only doubting his life right now, but he was also beginning to doubt whether a year ago, he had been possessed by some evil spirit.
Otherwise… his relentless pursuit of Lu Zhiyue was more baffling than the sun exploding.
“You don’t remember?” Qin Suitian wasn’t yet aware of his memory loss.
Chi Suinian didn’t bother to explain. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust Qin Suitian, but more because he himself couldn’t accept it yet, let alone explain it to others.
He rubbed the back of his head in confusion and said stiffly, “I just woke up, and I can’t recall a lot of things.”
Qin Suitian nodded, “As far as I know, you and Lu Zhiyue didn’t get along since childhood; the whole of Jin City knows that. But about a year ago, you suddenly changed.”
Changed?
Chi Suinian chewed on the word in his mind, trying to trigger some lost memory.
But to no avail.
His mind was still blank, like a bystander, he couldn’t connect himself to these events at all.
He even suspected he had never gone through any of it.
“When did I change?”
Qin Suitian: “About a year ago. Roughly… after the Mengxi Auto Show.”
Chi Suinian remembered.
It was the day Lu Zhiyue had stolen the deal.
“After the show, you went to find Lu Zhiyue late at night, stayed with him all night, and the next day you were possessed, pursuing him like crazy.”
Chi Suinian: “…”
Possessed, huh.
“At first, Lu Zhiyue didn’t agree, but after being pestered by you for a while, he gave in. Early last year, you two flew abroad to get married…”
Chi Suinian’s breath hitched.
Qin Suitian paused, seemingly recalling something: “Since your car accident, Lu Zhiyue has visited you in the hospital every day. The media even reported on it. So, if you propose a divorce now, it would harm both your and the company’s reputation. You need to think carefully.”
Chi Suinian stayed dazed for a while, his head slightly bowed, his expression somewhat blank.
So, in the public eye, Lu Zhiyue was now the perfect husband. If he, Chi Suinian, filed for divorce unilaterally, he’d really become the heartless jerk who abandoned his partner.
“There’s no other way?”
Qin Suitian shook his head steadily. “Likewise, if Lu Zhiyue chose to divorce you, he’d face the same predicament.”
In other words, their marriage could only drag on in name, prolonging this disgusting situation indefinitely.
Qin Suitian: “But…”
As soon as Chi Suinian heard him dragging out the word “but,” his eyelid twitched.
“I think Lu Zhiyue treats you quite well.” Qin Suitian seemed to chuckle, “While you were in a coma, Lu Zhiyue personally took care of everything, even helped you bathe—”
“What?!” Chi Suinian interrupted in shock, nearly tumbling off the bed. “Bathe?!”
Qin Suitian seemed unaware of the impact of those words and nodded gently, “Yes, personally.”
Chi Suinian’s vision darkened, “…”
Lu Zhiyue, I swear I’ll kill you.
“I’ll be heading back now. Rest well, Young Master Chi.” Qin Suitian casually dropped that bombshell, not caring how shattered Chi Suinian was by the explosion, and swiftly left without looking back.
Thankfully, Chi Suinian had always been broad-minded and healthy, never one to torture himself over vague words from others. In Tang Jin’s words, he was “shameless.” He listened, then treated Qin Suitian’s words and Lu Zhiyue himself like a fart, paying them no mind at all…
Yeah, right!
What kind of scheme had Lu Zhiyue used to smear his name, making him wake up only to face this kind of intense rollercoaster of emotions?
Even Qin Suitian, a person with such a deep mind, had believed it without question.
Damn it.
…Chi Suinian felt the urge to pull his hair out again.
—
Qin Suitian gently closed the door to the hospital room, slipping the outdated bankruptcy statement into his pocket. As he turned around, he unexpectedly ran into Lu Zhiyue.
“Mr. Lu.” Qin Suitian nodded slightly, noticing Lu Zhiyue was carrying a food box, likely here to visit the firecracker inside the room.
And that firecracker had just been ignited by his few words. Anyone walking in now was bound to face an explosion. But Qin Suitian, sly as ever, offered no warning and courteously stepped aside.
“Mr. Qin, you’re so diligent, bringing work to bother a patient?” Lu Zhiyue had sharp eyes. Just before Qin Suitian put the file away, he had caught sight of the word “bankruptcy.”
“Mr. Lu, with such a large business, you don’t need to attend to every detail yourself. Our Chi Group is just a small operation, with lots of problems. If I don’t keep an eye on things, we could crash and burn any time.” Qin Suitian smiled, “I have some company matters to attend to, so I’ll leave you to it. Good luck, Mr. Lu.”
At the hospital room door, they parted on bad terms.
Qin Suitian didn’t treat Lu Zhiyue as even half a boss, and Lu Zhiyue likewise didn’t regard him at all.
They couldn’t stand each other.
Lu Zhiyue watched his light steps retreating, his wariness preventing him
from immediately turning the door handle.
He peeked inside through the small window on the door.
Inside the spacious VIP room, Chi Suinian was angrily tugging at his hair, making his previously neat head look wild and messy.
Still not satisfied, he grabbed the pillow and punched it several times with frustration.
Lu Zhiyue: “…”
So that’s why Qin Suitian had left with that smug, out-of-place grin.
—
Chi Suinian had just finished venting when he heard some soft footsteps.
Lu Zhiyue had ditched his earlier suit and tie and was now dressed in casual clothes—a white hoodie without a hood,
black pants, his legs impossibly long.
He was nearly thirty but still acting young.
Chi Suinian, having just endured a series of shocks, was already in a bad mood, and Lu Zhiyue’s presence was like gasoline on a fire. The moment he saw him, Chi Suinian felt like he was naked, lying there at his mercy.
Damn.
Chi Suinian gritted his teeth in anger, his nails almost digging into his palms.
“Get out.”
Lu Zhiyue acted as if he hadn’t heard, stepping into the room and gently placing the food box on the cabinet. “You haven’t had dinner yet. Your body can’t handle it. The housekeeper made some lean pork congee and bone soup for you. Eat while it’s hot.”
Chi Suinian glared, “Didn’t you hear me? I said get out.”
Lu Zhiyue sighed, his voice carrying a helpless indulgence, “Stop being difficult. Eat first.”
Who the hell is playing with you?
Chi Suinian almost choked.
There was something odd about Lu Zhiyue. No matter how civil his words, when they came from his mouth, they somehow became infuriating.
This was exactly why Chi Suinian had always hated him.
He could still recall their first meeting.
Back then, the entire Chi family had moved to Jin City, and Chi Suinian had transferred into Lu Zhiyue’s class. Chi Suinian had been frail since childhood, with thin limbs and a fair complexion. At first glance, he looked like a little girl, and on his first day, some boys at the back of the class made fun of him.
Lu Zhiyue sat among the group of boys who were laughing their heads off. Someone elbowed him and said, “This new kid is so skinny. If he didn’t speak, I’d think a little chick was standing there, hahaha…”
Though Chi Suinian was still young, he could tell the malice from their expressions and tone.
Lu Zhiyue sat in the last row, arms folded behind his head, watching Chi Suinian with a rude, scrutinizing gaze, as if sizing him up.
Then, Chi Suinian heard him say, “He’s skinny, sure, but at least his face is pretty.”
As soon as he said that, the entire class burst into laughter.
Thanks to Lu Zhiyue, Chi Suinian spent his entire school life stuck with the nickname “pretty chick.”
It wasn’t until later, when Chi Suinian had beaten each one of them in turn, that they reluctantly stopped teasing him in public.
The grudge between him and Lu Zhiyue had been brewing for years. After more than a decade, they had become thorns in each other’s sides, constantly at odds. Who would have thought that they would end up as legally married spouses?
Life was truly absurd.
While lost in thought, Chi Suinian suddenly felt warm breath close to his nose.
Snapping back to reality, he looked down and saw Lu Zhiyue holding a spoonful of congee. The spoon lightly brushed against Chi Suinian’s lips. He couldn’t avoid it in time, and a spoonful of soft, fragrant rice congee slipped into his mouth.
He swallowed reflexively.
Gulp.
“…”
Chi Suinian furrowed his brow, quickly pulling away and pushing Lu Zhiyue’s hand aside.
He scowled at the bowl of congee. “Did you poison this?”
“We’re legally married. I wouldn’t harm you,” Lu Zhiyue said calmly as he scooped another spoonful. “Come on, have another bite.”
Chi Suinian was about to flip the table. “Stop reminding me every time that we’re legally married!”
Lu Zhiyue frowned slightly. “But you’ve lost your memory.”
Chi Suinian felt his blood surge, replying irritably, “What does that have to do with my memory loss?”
Lu Zhiyue: “If I repeat it enough times, maybe you’ll remember. It’s important—you forgot that a year ago, you were the one chasing me…”
“Shut up!” Chi Suinian shouted.
Lu Zhiyue’s lips moved slightly, but in the end, he said nothing.
What kind of karmic debt had Chi Suinian accumulated in his past life to deserve dealing with a bastard like Lu Zhiyue in this one?
With a heavy expression, Chi Suinian forced himself to calm down. A divorce wasn’t an option for the time being, but he didn’t want any further entanglement with Lu Zhiyue. After some thought, he tore a piece of paper from the documents Qin Suitian had left behind and quickly began writing.
Ten minutes later, he slapped the paper onto Lu Zhiyue’s chest with a loud smack.
“If you don’t sign this, I’ll beat you to death.”
